I found a guy, I'm sure I'm late on the train with this one, but his whole site is just him ranting. He seems to be some sort of rockwell fanboy and peppers his site with reddit img macros but he certainly has a lot of "passion" and "personality" http://lewiscollard.com/

it's wabbit season The Nikon 18-200 AF-S VR is a awful lens. Allow me to quantify that statement, it costs £674.99. In American money that's $1,069.25 for a very slow lens that has the same IQ as the kit 18-55 and 55-200 VRs. The near enough identical sigma and tamron versions (in actual fact both of them are sharper) of that lens are half the price and if you go for the ones without stabilisation you can get them for £150 tops. Going with a non nikon brand with all the same bells and whistles still leaves you enough left over for the 35mm 1.8 AF-S prime + the 50mm 1.8 AF-S (with £100 change if you go for the AF version) or you could get the 50 mm 1.4. Ken Rockwell champions this lens above all others and from this we can conclude that he is an arse. that should do it

He probably saw a spike in traffic and just saw where the link was coming from. While the guy is definitely crazy, his photos and photography knowledge are leagues better than KRock and despite having a poorly laid out website he at least isn't linking every other word or putting a pity paragraph at the bottom of every page.

Now I'm not usually one to advertise anything, but... My best friend, the wonderful photographer Kelly Hawkins, recently moved to Austin, TX, to benefit her photography career. She was living here in North Carolina where there is hardly any art scene to speak of. RAW Austin recently chose her to be part of an upcoming exhibition, but she has to sell a certain number of tickets, otherwise the expenses of promotion and exhibition fall back onto her. Moving and getting her pieces printed for the showing have cut her budget down to nothing, so that would mean she would have to drop out of the exhibition. This exhibition would be a huge stepping stone for her in Austin. Even if you don't live in Austin, consider donating to the cause by going to http://www.rawartists.org/austin/activate/?artistid=36346 and buying 1 ticket (they're only $10). Be sure to select "Kelly R Hawkins Photography" from the dropdown box for who you're going to see. And if you DO live in Austin, go check it out! And as a prize for reading all this, have some of her photogrpahy. More at http://www.kellyrhawkins.com Thank you for your time, fellow dorkroomers! This thread is as good as any to say that group shot post processing is driving the overly perfectionist me loving insane! Could I get ONE SINGLE SHOT out of 20 where everyone in the group manages to look somewhat normal? Without blinking, doing gorilla faces or looking like they just got shot in face?
|
# ? Feb 5, 2012 22:29 |
|
For group shots, I make everyone close their eyes and then open on the count of 3. It increases the chance of everyone looking forward and not blinking by at least 75%.

It's kinda funny to see the constant flashes going off in the stands during the wide shots of Super Bowl coverage. Closeup crowd shots show some of those flashes coming from dudes with big ol' serious setups and long telephotos mounted. Are they even capable of illuminating anything at that sort of range?

Perhaps if the players were covered in those reflective micro beads used in safety gear and traffic signs and if they were playing in some place that didn't already have 2.1 gigawatts of lighting directed at the playing field. Then again, maybe they're looking for that magic shot of a perfectly exposed, yet out of focus, head.

Inflation calculator: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-1633409/Historic-inflation-calculator-value-money-changed-1900.html The hasselblad (probably body only) = £2,310.57 you are looking at £1000 for a mint one with lens on ebay today.

For that matter, the Canon AE-1 (again probably body online) would be $480 now You can get a used one on eBay or Craigslist for like $50 or less now. I think film cameras are just devaluing as a whole. Granted, I'm perfectly okay for that - more cameras for me

That depends, medium/large format gear has pretty much bottomed and the good stuff has started climbing back up a bit. Last year it bounced big around tax time, and it never quite came back down.
