Then why does everyone ask $5-6k for one from 2000? Reading wiki is seems they won the WSBK twice and are geared wrong for street use. Not exactly amazing.

They're cult bikes. The Honda Ducati, basically. But prices are still goddamn absurd.

I'm from the tristate area too. Are you telling me prices go UP in the spring? Dudes around here are asking half again what the same bikes are worth out west. No guy, I don't think 4000 is a fair price for your "beautifully maintained" ninja250 with the scrapes on the muffler that you "bumped" in the "garage" and therefor needs a new headlight; I really don't.

Stunt bikes are somewhat of an anomaly too. Stunters seem to think that a homemade 12 o'clock bar, "professionally smashed" tank and relocated oil pump are something that people who aren't stunters care about, let alone don't laugh at

I found a nifty site that's been helping me look at local bikes.

http://www.bikefinds.com/ is pretty awesome.

It checks CL/ebay for the bike you want and give you a list of all the bikes on the different CL sites and eBay in one spot.

I'm eyeballing this right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180811373529#ht_500wt_1182

I would rather get on cheaper but that seems really good to me (barring it going way up...). Any thoughts?

I also use searchtempest. Great search engine. I find it's much easier to navigate if you go to display settings and select: All results together (powered by Google)

I've found several hard to find parts on there. Most people are willing to ship.

When my vstar lost a gearbox bearing, it dumped shavings into the oil and made a heck of a noise that you might interpret as tapping or knocking.

At this point I think it would be fun to work on it. My understanding is that most people lose this feeling after a short while. If this happens, I can still occasionally go out to the garage, drink beer on it, and make vroom noises.

To be more serious: I have read a few guides and watched a few youtube videos on motorcycle carburetor disassembly. While it looks time consuming, it does not seem that difficult. It appears easier than working on a car, for example. However, I am of course just an internet looky-loo, so my assumptions on this motorcycle's repair complexity mean very little, and I will gladly take any advice given here.

edit: Thanks friend! I will keep looking.

Not a good deal, maybe for $500 or 600. There are plenty of nice thumpers in better condition for around $1500. If you can and you're not 5ft tall, I'd spring for a 500 or 600.

Protip: Yamaha XT600s are underappreciated on the market, so look out for those. Solid bikes.
