"I'm going to go win back my husband/wife" would work for similar purposes, but also have similar problems.

I'm kind of reminded of Dwarves from Discworld, honestly. Keeping your gender private seems to be a cultural thing. That, or it's just a complete non-issue.

I don't think that counts, because that comic is after V's gender had been established as a joke.

All right - my money, for what it's worth, is on him having been originally intended as male, for two reasons:

(1) You don't need to be a classical scholar to associate the -us name ending with males.

(2) In #9, Roy calls Vaarsuvius "V-man". That strip was almost certainly written before Rich got the idea of making V's sex a running gag, since (a) there isn't the smallest joke about V and a Girdle of F/M; (b) as soon as the gag started, Roy will be established as not knowing and not holding any definite opinion regarding V's sex (including in the in-universe timeline, via Origin of PCs); (c) it's strip number fuckin' nine.

Okay, I may have been wrong but:

quote:

What is considered a gift?
Any transfer to an individual, either directly or indirectly, where full consideration (measured in money or money's worth) is not received in return.
Getting books in return for your money means it's not a gift unless you want to argue that what you're getting isn't worth what you're paying.

NPR's a non-profit organization and the donations are tax-deductible. Pretty sure OOTS isn't a 501(3). And if you donate $120 and get a CD in return, you can't deduct the full $120, you can only deduct the $120 minus the value of what you received in return.

That's close but not entirely accurate. I would have to dig up the exact quote from Rich but V's gender became ambiguous after the first 4 or 5 strips. All I remember it was one of the first few strips. It really is impossible to know V's gender.

On the one side, yay Redcloak! On the other side, 20th-level Order of the Stick taking on their final dungeon in the Astral Plane would have been a cool endgame.

e: I guess that just because the phylactery isn't actually there doesn't mean the OotS isn't going to attack it. So there's hope!

If they go there, in which eventuality Xykon of course will be alerted to it and try to stop them, what will Redcloak do? Go along with Xykon's orders and try to stop them, or tell Xykon that it's not worth it?

aNYWAY,

Deftly played by Redcloak there (his little victory grin is priceless). Now both he and Xykon have shifted the blame for their respective attempts to power-play each other on to Tsukiko, meaning Xykon doesn't even want her alive again since there's a chance she'd tell Redcloak about how he wanted her to steal the ritual and work it all out for him.

It was pretty well-written and organic and it didn't seem like Redcloak's responses were highly dependent on certain reactions he couldn't predict in Xykon, which is something to watch for in any dialogue where a character attempts a deception. I don't think Xykon even suspects Redcloak of alternative motive, that little "...No." of his is clearly more about him wanting to cover up his attempt against Redcloak than any suspiscions of his own.

In short, he put Xykon on the defensive so that he was too busy looking for the out that covered his rear end rather than looking for a lie.

I see it coming into play at the very endgame. Team Evil has been defeated at Kragoor's Gate, Redcloack has been killed by a not so controlled Xykon, and the OotS pursue the lich into his last stronghold.

Lots of things happened on this strip. Redcloack is showing some smarts and guts by turning the conversation on Xykon so the he is the one that ends having to explain himself. And what of Jiryx? Is perfectly reasonable that he'll want to kill a demon roach, but could it be indication that he is actually evil? Or at least, evil in a way that Redcloack wouldn't aprove of? I suspect that his respect toward his "Supreme Leader" was only an act until they finally left.

We'll never see that stronghold again. It's a plot device that exists solely to wrap up Redcloak's deception over where the Phylactery actually is.
