So wait, this album by Bjork is considered rare? I've had it forever and not realized this. In fact I'd never listened to it until today.

EDIT:

http://unit.bjork.com/77island/early/index.htm

"This album was only released in limited edition and is very sought-after by collectors and traders, sometimes reaching prices ranging from $100 to $700."

:psyduck: I bought it for $3.00

Bjork has been putting out albums since 1977? :psyduck: I guess I had no idea how old she was. That's pretty crazy, dawg.

I was going to say the same thing. I knew she was in bands before she was popular solo Bjork but '77? Holy crap.

Right, which makes it even more impressive. That's a long career for anyone, let alone someone who started before most people have even figured out who they are and what they want out of life. I knew she had been in music school since she was very young, I just didn't realize she had been creating for that long.

Can anyone tell me what this was/is used for? I found it in a bargain bin at a Half-Price Books for 50 cents. It's a double LP of ATLiens by Outkast that came in a plain white cover, but it's just the instruments. I am guessing it has something to do with DJ'ing or something because it lists the BPMs next to each song title, but I'm not sure.

I'm looking for one that works and is reasonably priced. Would getting a used one be advised?

I would recommend Ebay for a decent stereo receiver or Craigslist as another guy mentiond. I ended up getting a Harman Kardon 3470 off of ebay for around $100 and I've been really happy with it. I would just make sure you get something that is stereo (not surround sound) and that it has a decent phono input. I don't know a bunch about brands, but I think Harman Kardon is pretty decent for what you pay used.

Does anyone here collect the American Top 40 syndication records?

For every show, affiliate stations were sent a 4 record set of the entire AT40 show with cue sheets for the DJ on duty to drop in local ads. The first few years were reel to reel tape, then LP for much of the Kasem era, then CD's into the Shadoe Stevens era and beyond. I've collected 70/80s shows in digital format for a while, but when I looked into buying some of the records, the sets go for like $60+! There must be some old radio people around with an absolute shitload of those things stashed away somewhere. It's my understanding these were not supposed to be sent back, just filed/trashed/given away in station contests etc...

Or for that matter does anyone collect any radio transcriptions?

I don't exactly collect them, but I have one radio transcriptions disc that's pretty cool. It's an episode of Flash Gordon from 1936. On the B-side (which was originally left blank), some dude with a lathe tried to record a demo of his band with limited success.

Thanks for posting this. Mine came in yesterday and it's an awesome set. Contrary to the picture, it came on white vinyl (the single, too). I've never bought a record from Amazon but they packaged it very nice. Looks like it's still available from Amazon (select them as the seller) for < $11.

This burrito is delicious, but it is filling.
The Australian pressings are extremely eeeehhhhh, so unless your Grandparents bought them from the UK, it's not going to be the revelation you're expecting. They're probably also stereo in either case.

Sub $200 AUD will get you something decent second hand, but nothing that great brand new. Even the Crosleys are that much new here. Try looking in charity stores, garage sales, and swap meets for 70's stuff. You can pretty much tell by looking at a turntable whether it's cheap crap or something decent.

I have about six Casey Kasem American Top 40 shows from late 1986 and four Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40s from late 1984. I bought them at a local record store at least 14 years ago when they were having a clearance sale, so I got them each for $5. I guess they were unwanted then, but yes, the labels say something like "to be destroyed or returned to Watermark, Inc. after immediate broadcast." They were never meant to be given away or kept by the radio station; either destroyed or returned to the production company for destruction. Copyright agreements and issues and all of that.

And yes, all the DJ really had to do was drop the needle and insert local 30 second spots when it called for it (always at the end of commercials, which are included on the records). "Pontiac Fiiiieroooo, we build excitement, WE BUILD EXCITEMENT, PONTIIIIAAAAAAAC!"

Had some vinyl shipped from the US to Europe. Shipping was pretty cheap and the box was hugely oversized and filled to the brim with those air pocket things.

All in all, really good.

BUT they have changed it since with their self-designed vinyl packaging which I have not yet had experience which.

So all in all, this was a rather useless post.
