To get this thread away from arguing about Zach Arnold (who is definitely flawed but is still a highly knowledgeable and insightful journalist who has made very meaningful contributions to MMA journalism as a whole), I would like to point out that Bloody Elbow is interviewing Tucker Max on MMA in a five-part series of articles.

I feel a deep shame that Tucker Max is training at Relson's school here, especially since I was planning on joining in a few months. I'm actually glad someone posted a BE article for once, these are the things I need to know.

Convince someone at Bloody Elbow you're a semi-famous blogger or a D-List celebrity, and maybe they'll do a five-part interview with you too.

You better check your tone, Tucker Max is perhaps the greatest fiction writer ever for the 18-22 male demographic. Second only to James Frey, maybe.

Tucker Max should be the name of the protagonist in a frat boy serial novel like "Tucker Max And The Adventure Of The Boner Bender", not some dick I have to read about here

Tucker Max is frat fiction. It's so pathetic that he can become a millionaire by making up stories about girls making GBS threads on his dick.

Since CTC closed in 2010, it's been hard to get good training in Austin outside of like 2 places. Tucker Max has still managed to train with Kamal and Huerta, whom I still can't locate by gym, and Yves and Kennedy (former CTC members) despite him being in the city a scant few years. I'm guessing he just read up a roster of fighters that local gyms claimed and stamped his name along side it.

Either that or he just paid them a shedload of cash. One of his books got optioned for a movie, I'm guessing he's got some bills to spare.

I don't know a lot about Tucker Max but he was pretty humble in the interviews. He talks about how all the real fighters destroyed him in training but he came away with an appreciation for what hard training teaches you about yourself.

Last I heard Huerta and Kamal were training with Phil Cardella at Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. That was a couple years ago, though.

Ever since Phil moved to Florida there has been, I don't want to call it drama, a lot of people leaving to do their own thing or to go to another camp. So really the only guys who train there consistently that I've seen or heard about are Edwards and Kennedy.

Edit: They lost the Muay Thai instructor and a BJJ instructor then added a wrestling coach.

This isn't exactly MMA Journalism, but I scanned this review/preview of some UFC game for the Sega Dreamcast back in 2000. The article was written in June 2000 for GameFan magazine.

It doesn't say who the person who wrote the article is because GameFan was a stupid magazine where all the writers used nicknames, but he says Bruce Buffer ran UFC, after Royce Gracie gave up control of it. Also since all of those rules to protect people from getting seriously hurt were put in place, the whole sport turned into a "sissy slap party"

He's not that bad overall. poo poo he saw a niche market and capitalised. People like to cry about how he's a liar or he's a bad writer or whatever, but it's kind of hard to hate a dude who gave me a few chuckles in highschool and trolled fox news anchors when he was on their show.

If he wants to train MMA and talk about how it's fun or he got tooled by pro's who cares?

I find it more sad that Fox still doesn't have a proper writer doing some actual breakdowns. Jay Glazer is nothing special but I'd have thought he'd be doing something similar to MMQB on SI (peter king is poo poo) after events.

EDIT: I just read the article, all 5 parts. I actually agree with a lot of what he has to say about training and what martial arts can teach you about yourself as a person. I dunno, cry all you like about his career as a writer I think it's a pretty solid article for the most part.

I know some people like this who really do hate UFC ever since they mandated gloves, rules, and rounds. It kind of bugs me. Who honestly complains that they are seeing people not beat themselves into mental deficiency? These are also the people who prefer boxing because they do not have flash KOs.

It's not like the general brain beatings have gotten any less severe. There's no eye gouging or ball punching. I guess you could argue that lack of knees/kicks on the ground and back of the head strikes took some of the brutality out, but it's still pretty loving raw. More importantly, the fighters are about a million times better. Anyone in the UFC at any weight class in 2012 could easily make Tank Abbot in his prime look like a big sissy baby under any historical MMA ruleset.

edit: maybe not leonard garcia, who fights a lot like a tiny tank abbott.

i also like the game reviewer's complaint that more fighters started focusing on grappling rather than standup after watching grapplers destroy strikers practically every time they were matched up in the early UFC's

I am ok with knees on the ground being illegal, they could get rather disturbing to watch. On top of that, wrestlers probably don't need another tool to ruin everything.

When do strikers end up in top position on a wrestler with a chance to use knees? They can already use them to counter a shot, anything else would work to their disadvantage.

i've just recently become interested in this debate so i don't want to go full internet slapfight, but i could see knees being more effective against the double leg if the person throwing the knee isn't worried that the guy attempting the takedown has his hand on the mat.

e: i'm thinking about the knee that nate diaz threw against stun gun when stun gun's hand was on the mat
