Incidentally mbu using players from the late 1800s/early 1900s isn't just for the goofy name value - these pitchers ("deadballers") tend to have astronomically low home run rates compared to their modern counterparts. Deadballers are quite often the most effective and cost-efficient players in WIS.

Ok so when that exhibition season finished (I ended 6-4 and came second ) I joined a full open league and drafted prettymuch based on the advice above (killing my batting bench and seeking some real talent in those corner outfield spots). My dilemma now is that I don't really know what to do with my pitching staff. Starters are easy and I think I know who I want as Long Relievers and at Closer, but what is the difference between A and B for LR/Setup/Closer, should I be worried about LH/RH specialists / Tandem? My pitching staff looks like this: The system assigned the "Mop Up" to that very odd-looking Earl Moore (28 innings in 3 games and 0 ERA?), otherwise it seems mostly like a random assortment of players between A and B and I have no idea what should go where. Aside from general roles, what else should I be worring about with pitchers? If it helps, I assigned myself Dodger Stadium.

Glove and arm accuracy are both still progressing at a steady rate but I don't think either will hit your projection. His contact rate is still going up a tick per snapshot so he'll probably bust your projection there. His splits and eye likely almost maxed. Maybe if you're lucky he'll pick up another 3 points of range in rollover and can be a below average defensive SS instead of a good defensive 3B.

I'm not counting on him becoming a SS in any way, it's gravy if he does. I was just mostly hoping he'd be able to reach 80/90/70/70/70 offensively.

Well he's already there in 3 out of 5 of those He'll get at least one more point in eye, but might come up barely short in left split. He's still young though so you might get a few random points in splits past his 4th year anyway.

He should still get a couple more points of durability for the start of next season, too, which is always nice.

Here's another question. I've got this IFA I picked up earlier in the year Here is how he has performed so far My High A hitting coach is rated 60. My AA hitting coach is a 77. Would I be best served pushing him up to AA already given the coaching disparity and his performance, even though he's still so raw, or should I just stick him out in High A the rest of the season?

Alright, seriously, why does sparky CONTINUALLY pull my starting pitchers BEFORE they hit their TPC in HBD? I never, ever, ever have this problem with sim league teams. This is happening frequently to a team that has a DH, so there's no excuse for pulling my starter for a pinch hitter, either. I just lost a game where my starter had thrown 7 shutout innings allowing just 3 hits and 0 walks. His TPC/MPC is 90/105 and he was pulled after 88 pitches. Leading 3-0, my bullpen gave up 4 runs in the 8th. I'm so loving sick of this. e: four games earlier, sparky let him throw 101 pitches despite giving up 4 runs in 5 innings. I don't get it. All the runs have to score via dinger or they don't count

My pitching staff looks like this: I noticed that nobody commented on this so here's some basic rules of pitching staffs: - when in doubt, use them as setup A - mopup is the role for your shittiest pitcher - A/B is who comes out first. Long Relief A is less valuable than Setup A, and while Closer A is not intrinsically less valuable than Setup A, it adheres to modern closer logic for the most part, instead of using your best pitchers to get the toughest outs - peripherals are more important than ERA! this is probably the most important thing I don't know why it's last. if you have access to the Advanced player search, look for ERC#, but otherwise look at the player's Opponent Batting Average (OAV) and walk rate (BB/9). ERA generally matches up with performance, but it doesn't predict future performance at all. i don't know how that staff will do but my guess is "not well", even in dodger stadium. the biggest thing to look at for a pitcher is "does he put men on base", either via hits or walks, while in the sim ERA determines how hard they hit the ball when they hit it (HR/9 also affects this in how many home runs they give up). several of your pitchers put lots of guys on base, but left them there (mostly through luck, rather than skill), and in-sim they will probably put lots of guys on base and then the opponent will score runs. this is the sort of thing i should have mentioned before you made a team, but this is how learning works generally wow that's a lot of words in one block, here's a picture of a bird

Yeah I didn't really touch on that but that is some great starting pitching there. The rotation's a little wonky but nothing unworkable, and it does mean you have to keep an eye on Three-Finger to make sure he's not starting games below 100%.

Keep an eye on the waiver wire too. If any good relievers come up at less than $2 mil I'd consider dropping Spaceman and picking one of them up instead.

Nope, once a guy is set to start he's locked in. It's why it's good to keep an eye on your stamina so you can make the needed adjustments ahead of time.

foolish_fool posted:Is there any way to change my Next Scheduled Starter? I seem to be able to change everything else except that and I want to rest him for a game. Go to pitcher settings, give him a 5 pull rating and enter "None" for TPC and MPC. Set who you want to start the game to a long relief spot and make sure they have the TPC/MPC right. I've done this before and it's had the manager pull the fatigued starter who I left in two batters into the game (although the pitcher gave up a walk and a dinger). If you do this, make sure you set the rotation back to normal before the next update, pitch counts and all.

Probably better to set MPC to 40 to make sure there is a line that Sparky shouldn't cross. None/None is what you set a mopup guy to when you're having him be a sacrificial lamb.

# ? Feb 7, 2012 06:37 |

As long as you set it to 5 pull, they shouldn't make it to 40 pitches. Going none for TPC and 40 for MPC could hedge that, though.

I got a pretty good RC draw in Jose Mesa. This still has some tweaking to do and I'm not sure which park I want to go in yet. I could make an absolutely sick and disgusting offense but I finally managed to pare it down under 50 mil to get the whole thing under the cap.

I'd still set the TPC to none, I would hope that Sparky would see that and realize that if a dude gets bombed right away that he's not obligated to keep working the guy. The 40 MPC is really there just in case the guy actually pitches well (which can and has happened) or well enough not to get pulled immediately.

Any longer time HBD players have tips on picking towards the bottom of the draft? Because of my signing of every type A on the board and no one really picking up my type Bs I'm drafting at 39, 88, and then down in no man's land. How should I be ordering my board to maximize my chances of a major league player at 39?
