Picked up a new bike on Saturday for the chopping block. Fully running 1988 VT800, only 4920 were ever made, we have number 1503. My buddy had bought it 5 years ago for his first bike. He got scared of it and parked it in the garage, it hasnt moved for 4 years. Stole it for 550 bucks, tossed it in the back of my truck and drove it over to my buddies garage. We replaced the battery, drained the gas and replaced it, she started right up. We put the main seat back on it and rode it around a bit, she feels great. Yesterday we did a full fluid change on every system, repaired the front brake that was sticky and she purrs like a big angry kitten. This is going to be a mean looking chop when we are done. The seats and side panels are there we just took them off to get to everything. plan of action so far- Remove back and and chop off subframe Fabricate fender to mount to swing arm Chop off mufflers and fab up some mini organ pipes with turn outs that follow the frame Remove tank, subtank and fuel pump, replace with 3 gallon peanut tank and gravtiy fed fuel system Remove air box and replace with new smaller filter Rejet both carbs for new set up Remove guages and indicator panel, possibly mount guages on left side where the airbox currently is Remove from fender Ditch all blinkers Replace bars and risers Fabricate nice big sissy bar Errant Gin Monks fucked around with this message at 17:12 on Feb 6, 2012 |

A friend of mine is doing a photography class and needs some shots of an object in motion in various ways, and he asked if I'd be that object. The bike is half put back together, as you can see it has no mirrors, the gauge cluster was zip tied in, and all the shots are from the right because the rear side cover is there in spirit (but is in the mail finally!). The other option was my 6'3" gangly build getting photo'd on a Ninja 250, and that was a definite choice two. They came out alright for day 1 of him with the camera, I'll take it for free and for being relatively slow speed shots. I told him we need to find a place to do some at speed so I look a bit more natural on the bike. The first one where I'm tucked I was going about 15 mph lol. Then I got home and my piece of poo poo HJC that's been giving my trouble for the whole 8 months I've owned it finally hosed the dog. One of the plastic screws that holds in the visor mount backed itself out completely once, and even after replacing it and checking them all the time they'd still loosen up. The visor always felt like poo poo and would tweak and pop out. I sent HJC an email about getting a screw under warranty when it first happened and they told me to buy it myself, so I never bothered with the sticking visor or screws continuing to back themselves out. Now when I got home after a ride this afternoon, I lifted the visor only to have the opposite side pop off. Usually it was the left, but this time it was the right. Not only had the same screw completely unscrewed itself, but the nut base for the other screw busted when I lifted the visor. I emailed HJC to see what they say but I'm not keeping my hopes up. We'll see. nsaP fucked around with this message at 02:16 on Feb 8, 2012 |

My old HJC CL-12 (14?) did the same thing with the screw on the left side as well. The fix was to go buy a Shoei TZ-X.

That's pretty much the fix I'm planning on as this thing has been nothing but a hassle and they weren't very helpful when I first reported a backed out screw to them. I'll give them the chance to offer something tho, and I did ask them respectably about it. Then when they likely refuse, I'll just rage about how I'll badmouth their brand to everyone I know and hold a grudge for 40 years. I had two HJCs before this that were cheap but functional and fine. Got a low end Shoei in-between and I found myself going back to it instead of my new HJC. I should mention too, I don't think I did above, that the screws weren't the only problem. The visor had 3 settings, up, middle, and down, and it torqued and felt like it was going to break between all three settings, all the time. Half of the time the left side would pop out of the quick release on the road. This is after I made sure all screws were tight(but not too tight) and aligned, and the visor was properly secured. Serious piece of junk.

I had a cheap helmet and crashed in it, switched over to a Shoei Qwest. Old helmet was something like 2kg, new one was 6-700g lighter. That & the better design differences were like night and day.

Same here, went from my old $120 Icon which would swing the visor open at highway speeds to a Suomy Apex. Good god is it light and comfortable especially now that it's broken in. I haven't done much researching on the visor change procedure yet though.
