That's a bit of a stretch and you're kind of a nerd to even think that." so I didn't mention anything for the sake of social dignity. However Laura said you mentioned you frequent some forums. After having ridden my new-to-me 2000 SV650N for the past three weeks, I might have to revise my stand on whether it's a good starter bike. I always thought an SV would be a little boring seeing as it's so popular for newbies, but after having ridden it, I think it's a lot of bike for a new rider. Maybe if somebody were content to just putt around at 4k all day, it would be okay, but for somebody who would get a little curious about the power or wanted to learn from a technical standpoint how to control a bike at the limit, I'm going to the 250cc/500cc camp. I know I was trying to scrape peg by day 2 of owning my first bike, which weighed 300 something pounds and had all of 17hp. poo poo would have gotten dropped a ton if I started on the SV. For people who started on an SV, how was the experience? Were you comfortable enough to push it or did you just ride sedately for the first couple months of ownership?

After riding the DRZ for so long I jumped on a SV a few months back and was actually surprised at how fast it comparatively to what I remembered. Then I jumped on a buddies R6 and again lost my mind. I don't think the SV is gonna get anyone in trouble though due to power. It's not THAT fast.

I started on an SV with my only other experience being a bicycle when I was younger. Long story short: I'm glad I started on it. By the time I was done with the safety course I was already starved for a bigger bike than the 250 they put me on. They just seem gutless-- it's not even that I want the power to abuse; it's just nice having it there. Plus, the 650 isn't that fast. Even now I think if I had another 100cc's I'd be just about content. I think the biggest thing for me was just learning to keep proper clutch and throttle control. Also, I have over 1k miles under my belt now (probably closer to 1500) and I still don't ever really take it above 9k because I haven't found any reason or need to do so. By the time I drop a gear and reach even on the low end of 8k, I'm already about 10-15mph faster than the person I'm trying to pass. Now if I can only figure out why my bike hesitates and then surges around 5.5-6k...

Well, my good friend just jumped from an anemic 50cc Piaggo to a 150cc Stella (the new Stella is actually his wife's, he had the Piaggo) and I'm flying out to him sometime soon hopefully (grr internship) to teach him to ride a heavily modded SV. We'll see how that pans out!

I rode pretty sedate for most of the first year, started pushing it a bit later then had a target fixation lowside which slowed me back down. I still really enjoy the bike after putting 40k on it and look forward to riding every day. If I was going to do it again I would have started on a motard...mainly because I dropped the SV so many times and my commute would be fine on a DRZ.

I went from a Honda PA50 scooter to a Yamaha SR250, to a Honda VF500F, to my SV, over the course of about 10 years (with a decent break in between the Honda and the SV.) The SV seems "just right" to me. It may not be the fastest motorcycle in the world but it's still ridiculously fast in the grand scheme of things. My dad daily drives an older GS1100E, and after one spin on the SV he said he could never drive something like it without losing his license. I may end up getting a V4 Tuono if they bring an ABS model here, but that's more because the VF500F made me love V4's. That bike was so cool.

Ordered some Pilot One's for the upcoming track season. Will offer up my Dunlop Q2 Qualifiers as takeoffs if anyone wants em. 6 track days on them, tons of center tread left, quite a bit of max lean tread left. Not heat cycled to hell and back, not 'blueing'. I'd feel 100% comfortable doing more track days on these or riding them on the street I just want a fresh pair for 2012 since I have a lot of dates coming up. Also, scoring some free clip ons, rear sets and takeoffs from a local SV racer next week

Anyone know where I can get some jet kits? Sometimes in the rain you wish you had something to duck down behind, but that is really only a problem when I'm riding with the DOT MX helmet on a supermoto because water to the face stings at freeway speed. If you like the style, don't let the lack of a fairing deter you for any practical reasons- because there aren't any real draw backs and like I said, I actually think the wind blast is much nicer on a naked bike vs a sport fairing for longer distances and highway use.

Clean air beats buffeting any day. The one thing that I like about faired bikes is they protect my legs when it's raining, but it's not a huge issue. And because the SV has an agressive-ish riding position, the wind would probably support you pretty well. I never liked the DRZ on the highway because the lack of fairings and the perfectly upright position really strained my neck and upper body to just hold on.

Most of my riding has been on naked standards, and riding my buddy's windshield'd CX500 for a trip on the highway left me with a huge headache. My torso wasn't being pushed back like usual, but my head was directly in the wind blast, so it was getting knocked around the entire time. Nakeds 4 lyfe

Simply throwing a new jet in may (read:probably will) throw off the tuning at some other point in your power delivery.

So a better option is to get a dyno tune then? How much would that cost? update: Monday I'm going to be scheduling a full dyno tune at a shop in Santa Cruz, including rejetting / cleaning my carbs and doing any preventative maintenance that I cannot do working on the side of my house with basic hand tools. Will probably cost a few hundred, but the end result will be worth it. Hoping to get better mileage (getting about 35 cruising casually right now so shouldn't be hard), removal of the flat spot in acceleration around 5500rpm, smoother idle, and to have a sheared bolt removed from my shift rod knuckle so it's not loose and I don't feel like an idiot when my bike shifts from first to neutral instead of first to second when accelerating (even when you kick it up with force it still does this a lot because the play from having no bolt to tighten it on to the shift rod makes the throw very wonky. Ordered the Tuono mirrors to replace the stockers on my '01 naked. They finally came in and holy hell I can see behind me and they look good on the bike. Sorry for garage pic but forgot to take one before closing it up when I got back from riding this morning.

Been having a huge problem with the bike turning into an SV325 when it rains. Sealed the plug boot with a gasket maker and it still got water in it. Turns out the bolt that holds the radiator to the head is missing. Safety wired it up, and now my bike is rain-capable again. Yay!

Actually, I just realized I need to get a bolt for that. Luckily the sealant is holding up well. Took my bike to the only place with a dyno in Santa Cruz. First question they ask me is if my bike has a power commander. "it's carbed" "oh" I get it back the next day and they said they didn't do anything. Why? They did a vacuum test and from it concluded my front piston ring is bad. I was pretty hung over/out of it and called Z3n about it and he had me double check that he said VACUUM test and not COMPRESSION test because I was confused about his nomenclature (I thought he was just dumbing down everything for me). So I called back and he said he didn't actually do anything I told him to for the bike because he said if the piston ring was bad there is nothing he can do about the carb problem I was having. "But sticking a screwdriver in [something that probably doesn't exist on my carbs] made it run great!" Yeah, because my carbs were hosed with by the previous owner, have 46k miles, and need to be inspected and serviced. The engine has 6k miles. Had to schedule this "appointment" a week in advance too and wouldn't even talk to me on the phone because "he's pretty busy right now". Long story short: Don't go to Harley "specialists".

I'm facing a situation of possibly riding my SV650 from upstate New York to Indianapolis in three weeks for a teaching internship. The school's in the ghetto, surrounded by barbed wire (one of the best deaf schools in the country). I'd have nothing but the bike to survive the internship with for March - May. And I'd DEFINITELY not want to only have a bicycle around to sustain myself. Gonna be seeing soon if I can have a FZ1 instead to survive through it all. I hate how car-dependent America is.

Why would getting an FZ1 be better than an SV? I'm with you on hating the vehicle-dependency of America, but it was a lot easier to live bicycle-only (even in sprawling suburbia with lots of highway) than I thought it would be. Sold my car in 2010 and haven't looked back.

So I'm finally getting around to repairing my crash damage, and one of the things I need to replace is the handlebar. I actually liked the stock bar (not really sure how I feel about clip-ons) but I'm having trouble finding something aftermarket that's comparable. I bought this because it was cheap and looked similar, but it's too tall/wide for the stock control cables and wires and things to reach. Anyone have a recommendation? I'm not opposed to giving clip-ons a try, but they seem pretty expensive for something I might hate.

Awesome. Yeah, I sold my custom 2005 SV650 to my good friend. He's a sign language primary-user too (works for Intel and has a team of interpreters just for himself, the lucky bastard). Someone's interested in my ZX6R. If I'm able to hold on to that interest and get certain of selling it, I might pick up another custom SV this weekend on the way back to Rochester from some dude who lives in Albany. Sweet.
