MassRayPer posted:I am ok with knees on the ground being illegal, they could get rather disturbing to watch. On top of that, wrestlers probably don't need another tool to ruin everything. How are knees on the ground any more disturbing than Anderson destroying Rich's face in the clinch? The grossest thing in MMA is Palhares grabbing a leg anyway. FYI: Good MMA has moved past wrestler-bjj-striker stereotypes and you don't hurt the sport by allowing techniques that favor the fighter with the better skillset. I don't see why knees (unlike stomps) would result in worse injuries than under the current ruleset and we'd finally be done debating whether fighter A was touching the floor with his pinky.

What does knee from the mount mean? I am not very knowledgeable about the modern rules, and I am having trouble imagining what this could mean. Does it mean you cannot knee a guy when he is getting up like a Shining Wizard, or that you cannot like hop up and land knees first on a guy when he is down.

The rules right now say you can't kick or knee a downed opponent in the head. A downed can be a guy laying on a ground, a guy on his knees, or a guy with "3 points" down (so if he is bent over with his hand on the ground he is considered down).

I wasn't sure if this thread was just for bad journalism or any journalism, but this falls under the latter. Wyoming is moving towards creating a special MMA commission. Marc Ratner is lending a hand lobbying there. quote:House Bill 87, passed an initial vote 46-14 on Thursday. The bill must now survive three more House votes before it would head to the Senate for consideration. Keep in mind that this is a state that doesn't have an athletic commission of any kind, so while not hugely significant, this is a major surprise. They would be regulating MMA before boxing. It would be the 46th state (plus Washington DC) to sanction and regulate MMA if it passes, leaving just Alaska (no commission; has a surprisingly active indy scene), Vermont (not sanctioned but not explicitly illegal either; two small promotions run a few events a year), Connecticut (explicitly illegal although the Mohegan Sun venue is on an Indian reservation and thus exempt), and New York (explicitly illegal). It may or may not pass within the year.

And the fix is quite easy, just disallow knees or kicks to an opponent who has at least one knee on the ground. Hands and arms don't need to come into it.

The Connecticut Legislature is once again pondering regulating MMA. There's a bill coming up for public hearing next week apparently, so it's in a really early stage, but if it doesn't get derails it should come to fruition in oh, about six months. Still, they're closer to regulation than New York now. Marc Ratner should be there to advocate on behalf of the UFC. This is in addition to Wyoming possibly creating an MMA commission, reported a few weeks back. It's already passed the Wyoming House of Representatives and passed a Senate committee vote a few days ago, meaning it only has to pass a Senate vote and then get the Governor's signature. So, this is where things stand right now: • New York - Not regulated by the state athletic commission, MMA is explicitly illegal • Connecticut - Not regulated by the SAC, MMA is explicitly illegal*; it might be legal by the end of the year • Vermont - Not regulated by the SAC, but MMA appears to be legal • Wyoming - No state athletic commission present, but MMA is legal; there is a good chance that there will be a commission in place specifically for MMA by the end of the year • Alaska - No state athletic commission present, but MMA is legal • Montana - Not regulated by the SAC beyond licensing (if I'm wrong about this please let me know), but MMA is legal; they're kind of in a gray area • The other 44 states and Washington DC - MMA is both legal and regulated by the state athletic commission *: The Mohegan Sun Casino venue is an exception in Connecticut, as it is on an Indian reservation, and they run regular shows. People who bring that up in arguments tend to miss the point however.
