Wait and pray for good sales. And compound discounts. E.G. Sometimes Myer will have 20% off Lego, and then another 10% (28% total) for Myer One members. And some Benefit Clubs/Entertainment Books will let you buy Myer gift cards for 5% off.

So a $140 set would be reduced to $100.80 and you would buy it with a $100 gift card that cost you $95.

Sometimes Fishpond, oo.com.au and other overstock sites sell below RRP, but you have to know what you're looking for and what the price point is.

If anyone has other methods I'm interested too.

Big W churns through their stock a lot at slightly lower prices than usual, though it's a crapshoot as to what you'll actually get on the shelves.

While not specific sets, it does have some fairly nice MOC's up there and if you put in what sets/bricks you have it will tell you if you have the parts to make it.

It's not hard at all and I'm gonna quote myself to see if that will help:

InfinEight posted:

Let me see if I can help you a little:

Go to bricklink.com and select 'catalog items' from the drop down menu next to the search field. Then put in the part number for the piece you want to find , for example 4211129. Hitting enter will bring you to this page: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2460&ccName=4211129

From there, you can see a list of all the colors that part is available in on the left side. Clicking on the color link will show you what stores are selling that part in that color. This is a good way to find one piece. However, if you want to find as many pieces in one store as possible, then you'll want to make a 'wanted list'. So make an account if you haven't already, and then on the catalog page for a part you want you'll see a link that says 'add to my wanted list' next to the available colors.

Then you can set the parameters for what you want out of this part, what color you want, which 'wanted list' it goes onto, if you only want new or used, etc. Once you've added all the pieces to your wanted list, you can go to 'My Wanted List' and 'show all' to see what stores have the parts you want. When you visit a store, there will be a link on the left under the cart buttons that will show you everything the store has that is on your wanted list. If you go to 'wanted' and then 'My wanted list by shop', it'll show in order what shops have the most parts you want.

This way you can minimize how many stores you purchase from and pick the stores with the lowest prices. Hopefully that clears things up somewhat :)

For just the motorcycle alone you can probably expect around $100 for all the parts + shipping, since those chrome parts (if you insist on chrome) will be more expensive, plus I don't know how rare those wheels or springs are.

LEGO stickers get so frustrating for someone with shaky hands. But it was worth it to have my own LEGO X Wing fully decked out. I wouldn't say get this kit at full price, but it is an excellent kit, even after you get past the kickass fuselage and into the less interesting wings.
I went to Toys R Us thinking it would be 30% off, but it turned out it was only 10% off at the register. I got it anyway. :negative: I don't regret it though.

For this I would recommend buying the 8051 technic motorcyle as a base for parts. http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8051-1 It looks like most of the parts came from that set and it was around $50 when it was released and toysrus might still have some on the shelves.

InfinEight is right about bricklink and the chrome parts, they will jack the price up quickly. I bought a few chrome parts and used them in the past but find them distracting on the models except for a few rare cases.

You are missing 723 of 1248 pieces (have 42.1%) required to build this set.

The old yellow canopy is pretty common, so there's probably no danger of that. He wanted to use the trans black one that came in the UCS Snowspeeder, but there's only one on BL right now... for $60.

Rebrickable is really cool, I saw it linked here before but I forgot the name so thanks for bringing it back up. I just put in my sets and decided to see what I could make. I mostly saw small sets, but what caught my eye was this top. I built it and it works INCREDIBLY WELL, I didn't think lego bricks were going to make for a good top. I spun it and my dog was watching it really intently. As soon as it stopped, he barked at it a lot then picked it up and threw it so it broke. I got a video if anyone wants to see this top in action, but let's be honest you really just wanna see my dog.

I immediately had to pick up the pieces to make sure he didn't eat any. The top is now reassembled.

Beats me. I don't even have my existing lego sorted so it's not like I'm in a hurry to buy more. But $.10/part is, I believe, fairly common for official kits; I'd honestly expect a premium from Bricklink.

Oh right, sorry I thought you were talking about average prices. If I can make this thing for a comparable price to the ridiculous (Australian) price tag of the the official set, I'm doing it. Hell, I'll likely pay much more.
