Watching the episode now. This whole car chase feature is nothing more than overscripted advertising for Sweeney isn't it? What a boring pile of poo poo.

The cut chase scene wasn't actually that good either. Switching camera angles every 0.3 seconds doesn't make things exciting, it just makes it look stupid.

For a picture of how a Ford vs Jag chase should look, this is the equivalent scene from Stoppo Driver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFeJAe4f9g0

I'm surprised none of the UK goons have mentioned Nissan's Sweeney pisstake back in the nineties:

Not entirely convinced the new film will be able to do better than that, frankly.

The car chase sounded really fun in a pitch meeting, but died in production. As the VW ad they did a few years ago was great.

I've been rewatching the episode on iPlayer, and I'm pretty comfortable that, had Hammond just hosed off like he was told to at the start, the chase stuff would have been pretty watchable.

I got the impression that the whole car chase bit was them being subversive. It was like a pantomime, where this movie (which they were probably told to big-up and make look exciting) is supposed to be a Serious Production, but everyone knows it's just going to be a laughable caricature, so they just piled on their own caricature on top. And the "final edit" was Top Gear saying "this is what a polished turd looks like". Am I reading too much into it?

I'm confused now - you're talking like everything that happened wasn't pre-arranged? You know the stuff they shot won't actually be part of the film? I'm sure you do... I'm just confused.

According to Wikipedia, Clarkson had some part in the film though, so it's not out of the question they'll use his bits. I think that was the idea all along, Clarkson gets to film an actual movie car chase and Hammond gets to faff about for our entertainment.

Shwmae!
The parts with the traffic swerving about and the powerslide into the gates, the race around the caravan park, etc, that's all stuff Clarkson helped with and will be in the film for reals and then the obvious, jokey, funny bits with the jumps and the explosions is just stuff that was paid for by the BBC to put on the show.

They showed the actual trailer at the end, which included the car chase Clarkson was filming.

I'm mixing my fourth wall a bit, yes. What I mean to say is that it's the stupid Hammond shite that annoyed me, the rest was ok. You know when the director tells them to do it properly or gently caress off? I'm jokingly suggesting that, had their script then involved Hammond doing either of those things, everything would have been hunky-dory.

Of course it's all scripted, but Clarkson's scripted stuff was enteraining and Hammond's scripted stuff was shite, so I would have preferred a different script. I still get the distinct impression that I'm going to enjoy the film less than the TG stuff regardless.

Why can't you buy them? Is it some sort of proprietary tech available from filmotechnic only?

Also I had quite a few laughs during this episode, the staged bits and otherwise, so it was okay in my book. The whole 10 second bit holding the button was hilarious, as was the cringe-worthy dialogue preceding it. Plus it was funny seeing the director (producer?) telling Clarkson to gently caress off the second time :v:.

Film tech is usually proprietary simply because the uses are so unique to the film industry. And for the most part, a producer doesn't want to play with camera poo poo after a shoot.

Now, what if the camera car isn't setup perfectly and you end up tipping the fucker doing a sharp turn, congrats you just lost half a million worth of equipment. So you obviously want someone who only works with this piece of equipment operating it for you.

Where else would you need this quick of a crane besides a movie? Stuff down the line get's copied obviously, there are other film cranes available, some even that go on cars. But film people are professionals, so they don't comparison price shop for tools, they just know one works and the other doesn't. For example, maybe you've heard of a steadicam move? Well, the steadicam is a single dude's design, tiffen ended up buying them but it's still the goto piece of equipment for steadicam operators. As it's literally in their name.

Cameras aren't really like this except for a few special cases, like Arri and I think there is some special imax/boeing cameras that are similar. But basically all the older 35mm cameras, the real fancy ones, those were rent only.

In the scene where they were pulled over on the side of the road and the fireworks were exploding out the back of Rutledge's truck, you can see what looks like a Suburban or some other large SUV with a light bar parked in front of the lead semi, so they probably had police escorting them the whole way.
