I thought this would be the best thread to ask -- I'm going through my background check for a Secret clearance right now. I was reading the A/T thread about being an erotica author and almost (all?) those authors write using a pen name. Obviously, for tax purposes, you have to supply your real name to the publishing companies.
I was toying around with the idea of supplementing my income by trying this out, but would it have any implications for my clearance? I know it's not illegal or anything, but I wonder if they'd have any problems with the actual source of income. If nothing else, this might be mild blackmail material, I guess, which could be a security concern...

it's only blackmail material if nobody knows about it. depends on if you're keeping it a secret or not, i guess. paris hilton can't be blackmailed with her sextape since it's public knowledge...

The process for getting as secret security clearance is pretty damned easy - they didn't even bother conducting interviews when I did mine. I doubt they'd even care as long as you provided a brief explanation.

I'm not sure if the US is the same as Canada, but the funniest thing I have ever seen is when my ex-roommate was going to get Top Secret clearance to go work for CSIS (Canada's CIA) which you aren't supposed to share with people. He told everyone and of course was told: "don't tell people about this stuff". It was funny.

Sadly, I don't really have much advice to offer here but I figured I could chime in with some numbers from my recent USAJobs experience.
Number of positions applied for: 36
Number of positions referred to selecting official: 8
Number of interviews (both phone): 2
Number of offers: 1

Hopefully this will help someone in some way.

Also, I rejected the offer because they didn't offer me the paygrade I qualified for, but the lowest one. And said I'd be working unpaid overtime and weekends a lot. gently caress them.

I'm kinda jealous of people who have those jobs. Work outside in a beautiful place doing physical labor, get plenty of time off, get paid relatively well.

What was your previous experience in that area?

This is kind of an unrelated question for this board, but I figured there might be some more knowledgeable Feds here that can point me in the right direction. I have no idea where to start in trying to figure this out:

My wife has been offered an exceptional job opportunity outside of this area (DC) and we will be moving (she'll be making more than the 2 of us are making combined right now, we really can't turn it down). I've been watching USAJobs for weeks hoping that something decent will open up where we're moving, but all that ever pops up are jobs that require National Guard or Army membership, jobs that are GS-11 or higher (I'm a 7 right now, just hit my 1 year mark so I should get 9 soon), or garbage jobs like working at a daycare center at a nearby base.

My question is this: has anyone heard of instances where people have been able to request transfers to similar available positions in other locations due to family reasons? One of the big reasons why we're moving is to be closer to aging family members. I'd really like to stay in the government, but just going through the normal application process for a new job looks like it's going to be pretty useless.

Worked a a biological science technician for three years on and off during school doing invasive plant work, converting fields to native grass, doing ecological restoration work.

Last year worked again as a biological science technician doing hemlock wooly adelgid treatment, some invasive plant work and a good bit of vegetation monitoring(really tedious counting plant and tree seedlings).

Really I just got lucky getting my first job, they had a lot of money one summer and hired like 12 people. The next summer they could only hire four, and I was one of them. I also have pretty good references and the lady I interviewed with knew both of my former bosses.

You should be able to do a hardship transfer since you wife is moving to another state for a job (and to take care of a family member). The problem is, there still has to be an opening for you to be able to transfer to a new job/location. It basically puts you at the top of the list for a position.

Right now there aren't a lot of job openings so it will still be hard for you to transfer. My co-worker recently quit after her and her boyfriend spent the last 2 years trying to transfer to each others state (they met in training).

I work in an agency where it happens, but in my former agency it was impossible. I recently had this situation in my current agency. The director of the district office where my employee wanted to transfer to wanted to see my employee's latest appraisal. I'm sure he also ran his current stats. If my (now former) employee had been a shitbag, I'm sure the district director would have declined.

Seeing as how I have experience in HR which seems to be in-demand throughout the government (especially with regards to HR issues with Nat Guard Techs, Reservists, and all things USPS), I'm sure someone might need me. I'd be transferring downstate, though (it's a 3 hour commute from the new location to my current job).

Q: Can I get an unofficial transcript for my records?

A: No, however, if you are a current student and have an active OSU e-mail account, you can print your advising report, free of charge, from https://www.buckeyelink.osu.edu Enrollment and Academic History, Advising Report. An advising report is a complete record of your academic history.

If you are not a currently enrolled student, you will need to order an official transcript.

Sadly it appears not to be the case (as I graduated a few years ago), and they're not answering their phones. I emailed the OPM address supplied with the link asking about anything I could do but it's not looking up. I'll have to wait until I get the transcripts (probably Monday) and fax them in with my cover letter that way.

Sad that something so minor may affect me majorly, but I guess I can chalk it up to being a lesson learned. I'll remain optimistic.

For what it's worth, I keep a copy of my OSU advising report around and just turn that in when an app asks for transcripts. However, now that I think of it, I should probably not do this as it says THIS IS NOT A TRANSCRIPT in big letters at the top. Perhaps this is why I cannot land an interview anywhere. I could white it out but that would be dishonest.
