jackpot posted:What am I doing wrong that's making my files read-only on windows? How do I avoid this without having to do all my dropboxing from windows? Probably nothing. Even if your Macintosh permissions were read-only, they're not honored by Windows. My guess would be they're not actually extracting the archive. Most versions of Windows treat a zip archive like a folder by default; you double-click it, a window full of files opens, and you can open files directly from it, completely oblivious to the fact those files don't exist anywhere. That you're able to replicate it yourself by actually extracting makes that seem less like the obvious option, though.

Windows doesn't extract unless you explicitly tell it to...I'd forgotten that, that's why I thought it was "broken" for me too. Add to that the fact that his PC is set to "hide extensions for known file types" (why in gently caress is that still the default setting? It's literally the first thing I change in a windows build, going back about ten years now), and I didn't notice that the files he was opening weren't actually inside a folder, but were still in the zip. I haven't heard back from them yet, but I've emailed them and I think you're exactly right. jackpot fucked around with this message at 20:46 on Feb 20, 2012 |

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but has anyone found a defaults plist setting to have a separate Search bar in the Safari 5.2 beta? I am firmly against the "omnibar" because I feel that searching and typing in an explicit URL should be completely separate things. I know I'm a huge sperg for this.

(Also, for those who have used it [I haven't yet], does it give instant results as you type, and can you at least turn THAT off in the prefs?)

I wouldn't expect it to be in a shippable state for another 8 plus months at least. We'll probably get Mountain Lion next year. Plenty of time to make Lion updates between now and then.

Ran Mountain Lion for a couple of days but I'm going to roll back. Nothing at all compelling about running it right now (the best part is Messages, which is out for Lion!) and a ton of apps aren't compatible.

Unless I'm missing something, unchecking "Usernames and passwords" made Safari stop nagging about passwords on every page.

Star War Sex Parrot posted:Did the Safari 5.2 beta change the "remove items from history after" to a year for anyone else? Have the added a "No history" option? Also, does it trim your history while it's still running? ie. Currently Safari only trims your history when you quit/launch (or when you clear history manually, of course). That means that despite the fact that I have Safari's history setting at the minimum of "After one day," I end up with days and sometimes weeks worth of history because I rarely quit Safari (and I'm lazy/forgetful about doing it manually). I really should just use a different browser.

Do other browsers do that auto-trim stuff you're referring to? I've never seen it and would only think it comes through an extension. FF10 + Chrome for Flash for life.

I think in the newest Lion update you can now rearrange full-screen spaces by dragging them into position, but in the current dev or ML builds can you also rearrange desktop spaces in the same way?

You can do that in Lion, but the first space has to remain first for some reason.

I ran ML on my current model MBA over the weekend and reverted back to Lion as well. It does seem 'snappier', even as an upgrade to Lion. But, it breaks Dropbox and ARD, so I can't use it on my personal machine. Also, I did a TM backup before I installed it, and it didn't do a full backup, just my home folder, which made restoration really fun. I immediately thought of this when I saw the ML logo.

Just tried it, seems to work fine bar the 'first space is first' thing. Had space > fullscreen Calendar.app > space > fullscreen iTunes and no problems. Dropbox works fine for me in ML by the way. I'm going to stick it out, have only noticed a few glaring bugs so far. Calendar.app reverting to a different preferences panel when I try to tick a delegate calendar on my GMail CalDAV account, and Safari having seriously spazzy gifs that resize between frames, for example.

Why do my Documents and Dropbox folders insist on reverting to column view? I've set them to list view, I've gone into view options, deselected 'always column view', set the folder to list view, gone back to view options, set 'always list view'. Wait 30 minutes and click Documents again, and lo; column view is back! I've also deleted the .DS_Store files in those folders and done the above again. No difference. But no; this MBP insists that those 2 folders have to default to column view. What else can I do to wake the OS up to my actual preferences? I never use column view. And this machine didn't used to do that; I did a nice fresh install, updated the OS and now its always column view. (but only in Documents and Dropbox)
