We might be fucked, sir.
Fallen Rib
Today my advisor (my boss, I'm a PhD student) phoned me and asked me to put together a set of my photos on Flickr as a kind of "best of" reel he can have running in the background while he presents our work. I do research in the Arctic, but live in Saskatchewan, and as a hobby / sanity maintainer I drive around on weekends, exploring the flat empty prairie and taking pictures. Apparently, he likes these pictures and wants to show them off.

His presentation is tomorrow/today (time zones) so this is my homework tonight, picking photos for him to show to a bunch of Australian scientists while he's probably cracking jokes about my (lack of) work ethic. :/

EDIT: I have no ability to prioritize. 248 photos dumped into the set.

That shot makes it look Google+-ish, which isn't exactly a bad thing. That's pretty much the thing I liked most about G+. Flickr has needed a makeover for awhile now so it's about time.

edit: I'm honestly surprised there isn't a sparkling award gif for that guy's bulge in the comments.

They claim their race horse was spooked into gallop by a press photographer right before crossing the finish line and getting disqualified as a result.

I see the guy, but I don't see any camera? They're banning photogs from standing there from now on as a result.

I can see how it would suck to lose if that was the case, but it's not like he was using 1/1 flash or springing out of the bushes or anything. Strange.

Not really fun discussion, but Remi Ochlik and Marie Colvin were killed in Syria yesterday. If you follow war photographers, Remi was pretty amazing. His shots from the Egyptian protests were incredible and he will definitely be missed.

Marie Colvin was notorious for being a tough, intimidating, and completely no-nonsense war correspondent. After taking shrapnel from an RPG attack by the Sri Lankan army she took to wearing an eye patch rather than opting for a prosthetic eye.

I don't want to get too political in the Dorkroom's fun thread, but Assad's forces are blatantly targeting journalists, and I say that ignoring that they're indiscriminately bombing and shelling civilians and have snipers posted to shoot any civilians who try to run for safety. This has been a horrible week for the journalism community having lost such brave people.

If you want more information about it, D&D has a thread about the whole situation. It was originally titled "Syria. hosed," and now "Syria Is hosed and Murdering Journalists." http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3466517

Oh great, not again. The last change was drastic and to this day I still have some issues with it. But now I'm at least used to it. Don't change it again! gently caress Mark Spiering.

If they do anything, I hope for God's sakes they do something that makes it easier to move pictures into different positions. If they do that I will be happy. But they need to just basically leave it alone in my opinion. It works. Don't break it.

I love the work I've seen from this guy in the past. I would love to try shoot something like this (albeit on a much much smaller scale) . I can't imagine paying a crew, makeup, costume people, etc.. just to try it out, though.

The 61 point AF is the same as in the 1DX, but a "simpler version". This may be exactly what people have been waiting for. It probably wont AF @ f/8 like the 1D, and it may be slightly dumbed down (like a 7D versus the 1Ds. It's pretty loving close, good enough for most people).

Given that 5d2s are selling used for $1700-1900, I'm not sure how many prosumers will jump to it right away, but the working pros who want/need the best to make their lives easier will definitely do it.

Why stop at f0.4?

The Carl Zeiss Super-Q Gigantar, 40mm f0.33.

It doesn't produce an image, it was a one-of built in response to people bitching about Zeiss making slow lenses. Supposedly it is impossible to build a lens faster than f0.5 that actually produces an image.
