Took the FSOT at Embassy Tokyo last Thursday, pretty sure I passed again. Not that it matters, since I'm more likely to be hit by a meteorite than pass the QEP, OE and security/medical reviews. Still, a nice ego boost :shobon:

Does anyone who's recently taken the FSOT have any recommendations on what to read up on before I go forward with it?

I prepped a lot for it the first time. Almost all of it was useless, most of it is common knowledge about current events and very basic computer stuff.

I'd prepare more for thinking about life experiences you can fit in tiny paragraphs and doing an essay in a short period of time.

Holy poo poo, am I the only person in the entire embassy who didn't get the Windows 7 + Chrome upgrade? How does my OMS get it (possibly because she's related to the IMO) but I don't?

Isn't Win7 still in pilot/beta phase?

I'd be pissed if I didn't have chrome, however, I wouldn't be upset about not getting Win 7.

It's hard for me to dread bidding (summer cycle, homies) when I'm already dreading the transition to the DS-5055. I suck at writing about myself. :colbert:

I imagine the work in Iraq would help a lot. They like overseas work and that sounds like it's pretty relevant.

Also WPAS. gently caress I'm going to hate my work life over the next 2 months.

Edit: I can only hate work so much, we had 3 days of local holidays here in Brazil. Took off work last Thursday and went to the beach for Carnival (not Rio, but a city in Rio State) and first day back is tomorrow. Only thing I can say is :drat:, and I'm not talking about being out of the office for 5 days. Notable points include watching an event organizer do a line of coke right in front of us off a piece of cardboard in the gutter, paying out the rear end to hire a private boat to drive us around the bay, and hanging out at the beach :circlefap: .

Win7 is still in pilot. Overall, I like it but it definitely has some issues that need to be worked out.

I got an email from my CDO that they are doing our bidding early. So, I'll get my assignment in July over a year before I'm eligible to leave here. My family is pretty psyched about that.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have no problem working in that environment and want to go back over to say Afghanistan or similar. I recently completed my degree, BSci Info Tech, and have a relevant certification from the IMS listing. On the grade questionnaire, I pretty much ticked off everything, as I had managed people and made policy decisions while over there.

I submitted the relevant documentation, my cert and edu transcripts, and went all the way to the end and hit finish. In the USAjobs website I'm listed as: "Resume Received" and in the DoS site on monster:

"Grade 05:Application Received
You have answered all the required questions for this grade."

Anything else I should be aware of? I went over the listing documentation one more and it looks like I'm done on my end.

I went through and read more of this thread. It looks like that even if accepted it could be a while before the ball gets rolling.

You sound like you're very well off. I applied for the same position but not really having any IT experience or living abroad I know I don't stand a chance against guys like you.

Make sure you fax or e-mail all the asked-for material. Below the "Resume & Application received" it should mention like "Transcripts" and "Certification/Other Material" I believe? If you've done that then you're all set - just need to wait for them to contact you. From the sound of things you look like you've a good chance for an OA invite, but the process itself is a mystery.

Just wanna say this is a "wrong" mindset. You actually do have the same chance as anyone else that applied that met the minimum requirements - my impression is that HR/BEX views all candidates equally regardless of background.

If you meet the requirements you should get an invite to the OA. Someone may exceed the criteria and get invited, but turn out to be intolerable to work with and thus fail the OA.. BOF or Diplomaticus can elaborate but I think this is true for the Generalist spots as well, some folks on the yahoo boards come from an Ivy League with experience and very impressive recommendations, but still get nowhere on the OA. It's really diverse.

Don't worry so much about the other guys in the room - you're not competing with them, you're competing with yourself. Take it from me, it can be an extremely long process.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, I didn't know exactly how it worked on the FSS side. I only meet the requirements in the slimmest way possible, which is the cause of my doubt. Never know unless you apply though, which is why I went for it.

Anyone got advice on what they like in the short essay part of the app, or does it not matter much?
