Oh, yeah, I heard about that. Are they still going with the "his hatred of the Jedi gave him the power!" explanation?

I feel like this isn't the first time Palpatine's line about "The Dark Side being the pathway to abilities some consider to be unnatural" has been used to justify a lovely idea, but I can't remember offhand where else it was used.

I don't think they even went that far to justify it, I think even the people involved realized if they were going to do such an incredibly stupid idea as that that it would be best to just skip over all explanations entirely.

Also Maul is apparently now voiced by the guy who did Starkiller in Force Unleashed. Couldn't even scrape to get Pete Serafinowicz back...

Blinded by anger you are. Let go of your hatred.

They got Liam Neeson to voice Qui-Gon and Pernilla August as Shmi Skywalker last season, plus Christopher Lee and Samuel Jackson for the movie, Daniel Logan as young Boba Fett, and other guest stars like George Takei, so all in all I don't think it's a question of budget, more of availability and scheduling. After all, Sam Witwer is in America, where the show is made, while Serafinowicz in all likelyhood spends more time in England. Also, Witwer already did voice work for the show, so they know him. And the fact that he did a spot-on Palpatine in the TFU game shows that he can do more than yell and grunt.

Then again, maybe Serafinowicz just plain didn't wanna.

I'm guessing by your user name you know the basic Star Wars story, but have you heard the radio dramas? When I was younger I loved them.

Otherwise I'm pretty sure most expanded universe books have audio versions at your local library, but (and I've never listened to them myself) the Jedi Knight books actually sound pretty cool and don't require a lot of backstory to get into.

Chairman Capone
Dec 17, 2008

Yeah, I would definitely recommend the radio dramas, and then the audio books (if you can still find them) based on the Jedi Knight novellas, Crimson Empire, Dark Empire, or Tales of the Jedi. Those all used full-cast recordings, had sound effects/music, actually added to the plot of the book, etc.

Most other Star Wars audiobooks are just a single narrator reading the text directly, and usually make draconian cuts to the text. The Star by Star audiobook is notorious for completely removing the battle of Coruscant, for example.

The 20th anniversary audiobook of Heir to the Empire is pretty good, except for some weird pronunciations. The original audiobooks for the Thrawn trilogy were cut down to 3 hours each, the unabridged on runs 13 hours. There's also the complete trilogy unabridged for the blind which can be gotten through sketchy methods.

Entirely forgot about the radio dramas that's a great idea! I had no idea that a lot of the audio books were cut down, 13 hours to three for Heir to the empire is just sad.

It's really surprising how little there is on Tarkin. Off the top of my head, the only real sources that ever deal with his backstory are KJA's terrible Jedi Academy books (which describe his affair with Daala), the recent Darth Vader comic (where it's revealed that he has a son, who is literally not mentioned anywhere else), the Cloak of Deception novel (which has some of his early involvement with Senator Palpatine)

Your best bet is probably the Rogue Planet novel, because he's one of the main characters, but it's also a really bad read and doesn't really reveal a whole lot of insight into him. It does imply that even by the timeframe of the book, which is a few years after Phantom Menace, Palpatine has already included him in his plans to kill off the Jedi which I thought was interesting, and it sets up a bit of how he came up with the Death Star idea (which is then invalidated by AOTC showing it was the Geonosians who invented it) but those are the only Tarkin moments that really stick out.

Oh yeah, I think he also beats the poo poo out of Jake Lloyd-era Anakin, which isn't so much evil as totally understandable.

Do we ever find out what it is that made Maul hate the Jedi so much? From his two lines in TPM it seems like he is so eager to reveal himself to the Jedi and finally get revenge, and it seemed pretty funny to me because we never actually learn what he wants revenge for. Is it just general vengeance he wants, or is there something specific he wants to have revenge for?

He says "At last we will have our revenge." I took it as revenge for the ancient defeat of the Sith.

For audio books I ended up caving and getting revan since I wanted to read it any ways. Turns out it was one of those that has sound effects, music and decentish voices done by the reader. The story is kinda average but everything else makes it fun to listen to while working.

I Wonder why a "origins" book doesn't exist, it would be amazing to know how he became one of the top imperial officers, starting on his military training and so on. Conflicts with the expanded universe maybe. A shame.

Thanks for the info! I'll check Rogue Planet.

First, it will be be set in the classic movie era.
Second, it will be an Ocean's Eleven-type heist caper.
And third, it will star everyone's favorite smuggler, Han Solo.

Further details to come.

I think that the Timothy Zahn and X-Wing books are the best stories, though I also quite liked The New Rebellion, The Truce At Bakura and some others as well. They were all enjoyable diversions, though I'm less enamoured of some of the more recent additions to the EU.

Perhaps I'm being too nostalgic. I couldn't say.

What I really like are the comics that came out after The Phantom Menace, stuff like Boba Fett: Enemy of the Empire, Star Wars Tales and the "Star Wars" series (which was eventually retitled Star Wars: Republic).

Goku would be ashamed of you.
The trailer showcasing the resurrected Darth Maul came out today and his character design is identical to the Infinities story where he hunted down Obi-Wan on Tatooine when Luke was about five or six years old. So they might be making that specific story from the comic canon, with it being the final fate of Darth Maul.

Or they could've just gotten lazy and decided to use a character design they already owned the rights too.

Yeah, they were based off of the Sith witch concept art that was one of the early designs for Darth Maul. Also the show clearly intends (even if a few bits of dialogue massaged it for the EU's sake) that rather than Nightsisters being humans, the Nightsisters are a species with extreme sexual dimorphism where the females are Asajj Ventress lookalikes and the males are Darth Mauls.

From what I've been able to gather, Zabraks are now Iridonian settlers that grew up on Dathomir. In other words, all Zabraks are Iridonians but not all Iridonians are Zabraks. Humans were still the first Witches of Dathomir, but through the generations their hybrid children with Zabraks created a sub-race where the females are pale-skinned bald humans, and the males retain their Iridonian heritage. These individuals founded the Nightsisters. I think it's safe to assume that there are still human's, both male and female, amongst the population of Dathomir. As well as female Zabraks. It's just that this new race of Iridonian-Human hybrids is simply the dominant culture on Dathomir, overshadowing the other groups of Witches.

I put way too much thought into this.
