Do it, just learn to start your kicks at TDC and kick all the way through the stroke. If you stop short you're liable to get a knee to the chin on those old 500s.

When learning to kickstart on my KTM 625 it helped me when I learned to not just put a lot of weight on the kickstarter, but to literally put ALL my weight on it when kicking through. As in, my other foot would be off the ground. Never kicked back after I started doing that. This may not apply to most bikes where you kick it while sitting on the bike, but the KTM had a lefthand kicker which meant I would be standing off to the side using my right foot.

Definitely. 4-strokes don't need a lot of speed to the kick, just consistent force to bring the kicker all the way through its stroke.

It's entirely possible to use your hands to start a well-tuned 600cc thumper with an auto-decompression mechanism. Get that perfect mixture of gas and air and it genuinely wants to combust. Of course, well-tuned 600cc thumpers are not the most common thing around.

Having a kick-start motorcycle eagerly leap to life is a wondrous experience people just don't get to appreciate any more these days.

All I can suggest is to hold for an 08 for that sexy cross-plane crank action.

Sitting on the different R1 models, I find the 07's a lot more comfortable. I'm also obsessed with how scarily light they are, other than that seems like the newer R1's are still and extra 5,000$ in my area. I can't spend that much :(

No worries, use that to your advantage when buying. He'll definitely know there's a whole new generation out that's gonna drive the price of his down. Doesn't mean it won't be a kickass bike.

Not to mention it's lighter and more powerful than the cross-plane R1 that came after it.

I prefer the look of the 2010's but the cross-plane crankshaft is pretty much just hype. An '07 would be a fantastic bike. Make sure to ask all the questions and CHECK THE TIRES. If they are original they need to be replaced. A liter bike on old tires is dangerous.

Crossplane isn't hype. It's the sound. Have you heard one? Orgasm in motorcycle aural form.

If I was buying a bike for the sound it'd be a big V-twin Duc. I buy them to ride, that being said my next stable addition will probably one of the newer body style Ninja 250s. I've found that in the last 6 years my love of speed has diminished a great deal. I don't need literbike power and having a stupidly flickable bike is so much fun.

A 2010 R1 will probably be the only large displacement bike I have. I love the looks of it and want one just to drool on and clean with a diaper. I'm going to work really hard to start collecting the bikes I want and not piss the better half off so she lets me keep them.

Someone in the MKE area buy this. I got the guy down to $300 over text, he'd probably go lower in person.

Sounds like the clutch isnt disengaging, from what he says. He sent me a picture and the bike is clean except for a ding in the tank. Still a steal for a mini-VFR

Sorry for the mobile link, I'm on my phone. It's a '72 Honda CL175 for a bit over a grand. I'm looking for a bike in about that price range, and I really love the style of this one. It needs a brake lever and most likely new tires, but otherwise seems real nice. I know it isn't very powerful, but I'm looking for something like this for my 2 mile commute to work.

Having owned one of those, they are not very good bikes. Also that one is missing the lowers, so it was probably crashed, and good luck finding those fairings again. I sold mine with a streetfighter setup for ~$2500 2 or so years ago. I've seen a few for sub 2k out here, and if you've got a hardon for brit bikes then maybe, but even still, the valve adjustments are a pain, they idle like diesels, the fuel injection is terrible, and all in all, there are a lot better bikes out there.

Front: http://i.imgur.com/PH4RAl.jpg

Spedometer: http://i.imgur.com/sLnG6l.jpg

Pros:new Kenda street tires, new plugs and points, a new chain and the carb was cleaned and has a new jet kit. Electric starter was rebuilt too, and it has a good battery.

Cons: Could use new gaskets due to age, Transmission shifts well unless it's really hot, no turn signals (but not needed on a '63), spedometer is broken. It has developed a small oil leak from around the kick starter

Comes with a second seat (gold sparkle), the original mirrors, new clutch cable, new brake pads front and back, original turn signal switch, and a luggage rack from a different model that could be converted. It also has two sets of keys.

Asking $1,200. Thoughts? Looking to maybe buy this weekend...

Any reason I shouldn't email this guy? Most of the EX/GS500s turning up on my CL are asking close-to-or-over $3k. And well outside of town, while I think this guy is only a couple blocks from me. And I'd really prefer a naked bike.

The bars have been replaced so theres a chance it was crashed, though theyre pro tapers so it migh be just an upgrade. GS500's are pretty solid bikes and hard for too much to go wrong on them. Standard check for service history but it looks pretty decent for the price.

Edit: you might want to ask about that mileage - less than 10k in 13 years?

That is a cool old 2 stroke. Probably not a good first bike though, old 2 strokes like that are good for tinkerers, and for your first ride you want to be riding more than you're wrenching.

If you like that sort of thing, look at old Honda XLs - they are inexpensive and reliable. Like an XL250 or 175. I beat my 175 up pretty good and it keeps going.

See if he'll take $1000. They're getting harder to find and thereby commanding higher prices. Parts for them are also becoming a lot harder to come by too, though.
Also, I've also seen ones in much better shape go for around $1200.

Can someone please explain to me what the gently caress is going on here:

Is he just completely ignorant or is he trying to recoup the $3000 his wife spent on it 8 years ago?

If you're going to buy an older bike it's worth learning some mechanical skills to maintain it. It's OK to take it to a shop for complicated jobs. I think everyone should know how to replace their filters/fluids/brake pads/chain/sprockets and how to remove their fairings/tank themselves.

If you have an issue hit up the web, there's info on everything. If anybody here is lacking basic mechanical skill here's a good place to start: http://www.dansmc.com/MC_repaircourse.htm

Also this is pretty cool, I found the original ad. Everything lines up with what this guy is saying according to the pics on here.
