any examples of a hardcore record that lifted a piano line from an italo tune? i don't think i've ever heard one, you'd expect there to be a few that sampled "i like chopin" or something.

Ever since I moved out of Portugal I haven't really kept track on what's been going on there music wise, but I've been seeing a lot of hype over Marfox's new release on facebook so I had to look it up.

Turns out it's completely insane, even for kuduro standards. it's not on youtube or soundcloud yet so the only way to listen to it is on juno:

Yeah that EP is a right wee cracker. Yet another Jeremy Sylvester alias actually. One of a billion really. Always liked the Serious Danger remix actually, turns it into a proper Speed Garage bomb.

And you know what, I probably should've said more Italo-House than Italo-Disco. My minds naturally is drawing a blank for Italo-Disco, half the things I think of end up being American pieces or not piano lines. More than a few bits of Italo-House made its way into Hardcore though, FPI Project IN The Hypnotist for instance is just one I can think of off top of my head. I'm not exactly an expert on that Italian stuff though but I'm probably not the best to ask, though I'll be hosed if their isn't a line from an Italo-Disco on some record out there somewhere.

But yeah a lot of those piano lines will probably be from an M1. Remember chances are you'll get some effects on there as well, or it'll have been stuck into a sampler and processed (and remember back then you're probably limited to your 12-bit Ensoniqs and S900/950 unless you were a bit flush with cash or using a pro studio and could get an S1000+) so it won't sound completely out of the box or super clean.

It's Friday which means it's time for me to ineptly round up some of the new releases that are either out now or forthcoming over the next week or so.

To start off with we have the big ticket item for this week, Scuba's new LP Personality. The forbidden love child between London and Berlin. A solid UK dance music soul in a body of German Techno, it's pumping without being shite and boring. A much more refined and quite frankly better album than Triangulation was (which let's be honest was pretty bloody good). Three hour DJ sets can't be all bad if this is what comes out of it. Just remember to keep telling him that no matter how much he denies it himself, he did make and play Dubstep.

LHF return with their 3rd EP on Dusk & Blackdown's Keysound Recordings. LHF are basically the United Vibes crew, one of my favourite acts off Sub.FM who in ye olde days used to keep playing Garage long after everyone had kinda forgotten about it, keeping that flame alive in the halcyon days of the half-stepper. What Future Garage should really sound like. And by Future Garage I mean Dubstep as Future Garage is still a silly term. Dark and spacey but with a real drive, a real solid pulse to keep things going. Double bonus points for those who can remind me what Metalheadz sample it is off LDN.

Kirk Degiorgio's excellent ART label come back with Justin Berkovi's latest single. Fantastic Techno that shows you how it should be done. Slick and powerful, it's something I could definitely see being in the more cleverer DJs record bag. Drive especially I think could fit in with a lot of things coming out the UK bass music scene nowadays.

It's been a while since we've heard from Cluekid as well, or at least it seems that way but now he's back on his own Bullfrog Beats label with Ninety Three/Swampman. The first is a great 1993 Jungle style Amen roller (though obviously not at the 155+ tempo). It's really a great track, nailing that sense of fading euphoria that all the 93 tracks have (even the really dark ones knew how to keep a bit of light at the end of the long dark tunnel). Swampman on the flip however brings in back firmly into the world of Dubstep. Sounding something like you'd find out on Black Box nowadays, a proper spacious half-step soundscape with earthshaking low end, the way it's supposed to be.

Finally today is a happy day for me, as Recloose returns yet again with his new single Magic, out on Rush Hour. Fantastic soulful Detroity-style House. Some really great vocal work while the beat is just so tricky and uplifting it's right up my alley. There's an instrumental for you weirdos who don't like vocals, and a Carl Craig mix for you tasteful people who like Carl Craig (in all honesty it's not a great departure on the original version, but it's different and nice enough).

I don't know about that. Scuba's been going down the road he's on for a few years now. Well since he moved to Berlin at least. So everyone is well used to it, it's just getting more and more polished with each new single, EP or album. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of folks who've heard of Scuba now don't have a scoobie about his pre-Berlin material.

Actually the new album has also made me pull out all my old Scuba stuff and go over it again. I don't think I've heard those first few Scuba releases since they first came out. I always seem to remember them sitting in the racks in shops for ages and I could never figure out why as they were dead good.

I have to admit it's been a long while since I saw Martyn play out (I think this was pre-Great Lengths actually, that long ago) but I enjoyed myself then. Of course I'm pretty easy to please, but his recent stuff has all been fantastic so hey, I'd risk it.

Yeah the new EP is great. As well as the EP they've got a 2CD album out next month, which compiles the 3 EPs and has a truckload of other stuff on it. If you ask me it works as the whole LHF/United Vibes crew know their stuff, know where to sample from and have listened to enough they know how to put it together.

It's a shame the likes of Amen Ra, Double Helix and Vibezin have taken so long to get stuff released. It's only been in the past year or two they've had stuff out, but I they were playing their stuff out from like 2006 or so at the earliest in their radio slot. I remember really liking it at the time and if I hadn't bottled spending a couple spare grand I had on releasing some 12 inches I often thought maybe I might've even asked them for something.

I'm still trying my best not to give in and pull out all my Metalheadz stuff, just so I can remember the sample on LDN. I swear it's off a Metalheadz release and it's on the tip of my tongue and it's pure killing me. There's also a Biosphere sample as well that I keep on thinking is from something else too.

Dammit! Ghosts Of My Life and variations, I knew that! So close, it was right on the tip of my tongue. Nothing annoys me more than when I know where a sample is from but I just can't pinpoint it in my memory. Drives me utterly insane - especially when I decide to be a stubborn oval office and not wade through a bunch of records and CDs. I've honestly spent like the past hour going,"Angels Fell? No, no, no. Metropolis? No, loving hell..."

But it just goes to prove, anyone who drops in a Reinforced or Metalheadz sample is bound to be making half decent music. Though I wonder if that really makes Japan cool, hmm...

E: Now this is looking cool, artwork for Lone's album Galaxy Garden done by Glasgow designer and DJ, Konx-Om-pax who's actually done a lot of video and graphic work for the likes of HudMo, Warp etc

^^^ That just reminds me how bloody long it's been since I've heard Youngsta on the radio, let along how long it's been since I saw him play out. Check out the b-side of Cluekid's latest release (I mentioned it on Friday) for more of this kinda stuff. Pretty heavy.

The next release on Fortified Audio is Seattle-r(Seattlean? Seattonian?) producer 214, with his Plastic Spokes EP. Very nice take on it all if you ask me. You can definitely hear the Electro part of things. Well Electro as known by those born before 1993 I guess.

Actually that would probably be a good friendship test. If you mention Electro and don't immediately say something along the lines of at least Bambaataa, Street Sound comps or even Drexciya if you want to stretch it, they're probably not that cool in the first place. And if they mention would people call Electro nowadays just remember to say no! They're probably weirdo stalkers anyway.

Yeah it's not exactly a bulletproof excuse, though you would've thought sales would have been strong enough given who it is. I mean it's not like Drake is playing every single city, on the same day, on the same time as Wiley. Still, no point doing it I guess if it's just going to leave you in a hole. It's a bit short notice though but hey, at least he's letting you know in advance unlike say, Zomby.

Speaking of touring, it makes me wonder though what would've happened to Grime if, way back when, any of them figured out their was life north of Watford and actually made an effort to venture outside London.

And I still, after all this time, can't believe Redlight=Clipz. I just don't know how you can go from such utter shite to something that's actually pretty decent.

Me? Hassle? Shocking, shocking words there. Oh the pain! Shameful really, just who do you think I am? I mean just because I can look at myself in the mirror every morning with a clean conscience. Is that hassle? I think not!

At least it's not Traktor.

Anyway so looking at the tracklisting I realise I listen to absolutely none of this stuff normally, so is this going to be some weird, inexplicable hybrid 140/D&B thing? I say that only 'cause I spotted Rockwell and Spinline on there and I didn't think they did anything other than D&B, or is this a recent developments? Or just surprisingly creative mixing?
