How much of a decent deal would you guys say this is?

I've spoken with the guy and plan on heading out to pick it up later today (around 4ish EST). He's the second owner and has only put ~1500 miles on it.

Also this is pretty cool, I found the original ad. Everything lines up with what this guy is saying according to the pics on here.

So yeah, he's asking 3900 firm, and it's got lots of mods with only 7000 miles.

Now what does CA say?

Looks to be in pretty good shape. If you're happy with $3900 I'd go for it. There are probably better deals to be found eventually, but I doubt much lower for the same condition.

Looks good. Check that the belts have been done recently...they have a pretty short lifespan, I want to say 6k or 3 years, whichever comes first. Might be 12k / 5 years. But if the bike has been sitting for awhile the belts need to be done because they'll conform to the shape of the gears they drive and get brittle/snap.

I don't even check the belts anymore or trust maintenance records. For $50 and an hour of your time it's worth it to just replace them.

Do all the fluids while you're at it.
I can almost guarantee that if the brakes master cyl and reservoir are stock you're going to find out they leak when you bleed them. There's not much you can do here except replace them entirely. Better now than after you lose brakes and hit a guardrail.

Do you really like old UJMs AND are you prepared to pull the carbs, disassemble them (all four), clean them, reassemble them, reinstall them, and resync them - or pay $400 to have somebody do it for you? If so, it's probably not a bad deal but I wouldn't call it good either.

I do really like UJMs... at least, the style. I'm looking for my first bike, actually. I'm no mechanic but I'm pretty handy so I should be able to figure out repairs, although the more advanced stuff (like what it needs) I'd take to a mechanic to handle until I get comfortable.

The worst thing about it is that a brand spanking new Elite list is $2999. The '85 might have some endearingly unique looks, but it's no collectors item and even in great shape it's probably worth only a few hundred bucks. Scooters can be worse than Ninja 250s in that the owners think they can never drop in value ever, like there's some $2500 floor no clean motor vehicle can pass under no matter how old and unwanted.

Was driven as a daily commuter till I bought a newer motorcycle.

Has been sitting for around 2 years and shows its wear. The seat will need to be replaced. I have the original pan and foam for it, was starting to recover it, but learned my sewing skills aren't that good.

Left side cover I can't find at the moment, but will keep looking for it.

Has not ran for 2 years so will need fuel flushed, new battery and new oil.

I would consider this a project, not an easy fix up, that is why the price is so low, I will not go lower.

4 into 1 pipes, there is a hole towards the muffler so it sounds kind of neat.

Wiring was jury rigged due to an old fairing being taken off, headlight is from a different motorcycle as are the front turn signals.

I could probably get this running myself in a few hours time and triple the price, but mainly I just want it out of my yard.

Must have a way to tow it home, the tires are very low on air from sitting.

Have clean title in hand, tabs of course are not good.

Asking $250. Not into trades or services. Available to show in the afternoons only.
