Don't worry, I am resto-ing a 78 CB750F and a CB360T, and doing my best to rescue a chopped up 400F to make up for them. However... Check that the belts have been done recently...they have a pretty short lifespan, I want to say 6k or 3 years, whichever comes first. Might be 12k / 5 years. But if the bike has been sitting for awhile the belts need to be done because they'll conform to the shape of the gears they drive and get brittle/snap.

I don't even check the belts anymore or trust maintenance records. For $50 and an hour of your time it's worth it to just replace them. Do all the fluids while you're at it. I can almost guarantee that if the brakes master cyl and reservoir are stock you're going to find out they leak when you bleed them. There's not much you can do here except replace them entirely. Better now than after you lose brakes and hit a guardrail.

If so, it's probably not a bad deal but I wouldn't call it good either.

I'm no mechanic but I'm pretty handy so I should be able to figure out repairs, although the more advanced stuff (like what it needs) I'd take to a mechanic to handle until I get comfortable.

1750 for a 1975 Yamaha RD250 with new tires, rebuilt carbs and a recent dyno tune? Bike is in awesome shape aside from a small dent in the gas tank. No leaks and no rust on it though. I'd link it but as soon as I started talking to the guy he pulled the ad. It's gonna be for nothing but runs to the store and occasional weekend rides on back roads while in Portland, and then my daily when I go back to Guam.

The '85 might have some endearingly unique looks, but it's no collectors item and even in great shape it's probably worth only a few hundred bucks. Scooters can be worse than Ninja 250s in that the owners think they can never drop in value ever, like there's some $2500 floor no clean motor vehicle can pass under no matter how old and unwanted.

quote:1997 Kawasaki Vulcan 500. Needs some repair. Has a dent in tank and a bent foot peg due to a low-speed drop about 6 months ago. Has been running fine until last week the chain came off while riding and cracked the crankcase. Options are to weld the crack, replace the crankcase, or replace the whole engine. The engine has about 14, 000 miles. It will most like need new sprockets and chain also. The motorcycle has a windshield, saddle bags and owners manual. Could be an easy fix for someone with the right parts and/or experience. Sounds like he was riding around with the chain too loose(?) Same thing happened to me on my V-Star 250 a few years ago. Slap some JB Weld on that crack and you're good to go. Only $800 for a bike with an easy fix.

Someone buy that, because right now, some dude with an ironic beard, and wearing some old-rear end beer tshirt is thinking of how many views he's going to get on vimeo for the emotional DSLR video he's going to shoot about the long, tear-filled road to making that bike into a hardtail. Then he's going to start planning the photoshoot with airsoft AK-47's and every flat, featureless chick he knows. SOMEONE SAVE US ALL.
