I have been waiting for a release of [rec] 1 & 2 on Blu-Ray here in the States for a while, but it doesn't seem like they're going to be releasing them any time soon outside of DVD. I see that there are Blu-Ray Canadian releases, but I can't find any reviews for them online. Does anyone know what the quality is like on them?

There's a thread about it over at Blu-Ray.com

Looks like it is a good release.

some dude posted:

I watched Rec 2 the other night and I thought the picture quality was pretty good. It's meant to look like it was shot from the SWAT team's helmets, so the look it does have is part of the film's design. I believe Rec 2 was shot on a higher quality camera than the first Rec, and it definitely shows. However, the first Rec still looks good. I only skipped through this one, but you can tell it was shot on video. I have a DVD of the first Rec to compare it to, and it looks better than the DVD. Both of the movies are presented in 1080p.

Both movies have a DTS-HDMA 5.1 soundtrack and both sound excellent. I had only seen Rec 2 on an HD broadcast, and the HDMA track sounds much more aggressive. It makes good use of the bass. I was underwhelmed with the DVD of Rec, but from what I heard on this blu-ray release, the HDMA track is just as aggressive as Rec 2's.

When you first start the Blu-ray, it has two options - English and French. I only selected the English option, but I believe that it's there to determine what language the menu is in. Both movies default to their Spanish audio track with removable English subtitles. I haven't watched the extras on either one though.

But yeah, I think these movies look and sound really good. I don't really see how they could be improved.

So what does everyone think the chances are of HBO releasing the rest of the Sopranos on blu ray? I picked up Season 1 for $25 at best buy the other day thinking I got a good deal until I found out there have been no new seasons released for a couple years. Bummer.

They will, apparently. I called them the other day, they said I'd have to call back when it ships and I'm charged for it to get the money back, but until then they can't do anything.

Also, yeah, my keychain got mailed to me.

Yeah, when I went to pre-order it two days ago, the keychain was listed as "not available for shipping" and also as "not available" at any nearby BB for pickup. I'd have to drive at least 50 miles to get one. Maybe a late change for pre-orders this close to release? Dunno.

I guess they ran out of them from the high demand. It's funny - you could buy the keychain separately for $5, and actually had to add it manually to your cart with the pre-order to get it for free. Since they sent them out immediately after ordering, if you later cancelled the pre-order they could revoke the "$5 off" that came from the combo and still make $5 off your cancelled order.

Best Buy's still worth it for the exclusive cases though what with matched prices and free shipping.

I dunno, I always thought the yellowish tint was sort of deliberate- gives the images a sort of searing quality. Granted I first saw it on one of the region 1 DVDs, but I thought that was the effect Cimino went for.

I think he means the excessive DNR. Notice the screenshots with the hundred dollar bills. The Kinowelt version is nice and crisp, with a good amount of grain detail. In the Universal version, the detail on the bills becomes blurry, you can no longer see any grain anywhere, and John Savage's hand is waxed clean. It isn't a devastating problem like Predator, but there's just no excuse for it.

I know what you did last summer, and frankly I am displeased.
It's too bad DNR falls under the category of "poo poo the average consumer doesn't know or care about". I still don't understand why this would be standard practice for video releases. It's deliberately defacing the movies they're putting out.

Well, in the case of Universal and The Deer Hunter, it is extremely likely they just ported the transfer from the HD-DVD release. Late 2006 was an entirely different ballgame regarding HD transfers. (Sony has turned it completely around compare to what they use to put out and Universal can do good transfers when they actually put the money into a new one instead of re-releasing one from the vault)

It's not Patton or Gulliver's Travels terrible, but enough to make it non-essential:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Amadeus-Blu-ray/1938/#Review

The problem is mainly due to it being an old 1080p transfer from 2002 (used for the DVD) and it's an inherently grainier film due to all the naturalistic lighting conditions. I'm waiting for the inevitable 30th anniversary edition that hopefully has both cuts and a new transfer.

Kind of off topic, but I managed to get a hold of the Back to the Future trilogy, and man. It's a much better movie then I remember. I never got the whole Oedipus thing before, or the reverse, or a lot of the brilliance in the movie. Hell, Hugo helped realized a lot of it. It also looks great. Definitely not the best blu-ray ever by a long shot, but it still looks amazing.

That said, I'm actually watching the extras (which I never do) and man. Seeing MJF in the interviews is insane. This man still loves what he did, and he won't let his sickness stop him. I think I'm gonna keep this blu ray.

Does anyone know if the blu-rays for Spartacus, Lolita, Barry Lyndon, or Eyes Wide Shut are worth buying in their current states; I would love to own every Kubrick film on blu-ray, except for maybe Fear and Desire and Killers Kiss? Eyes Wide Shut, I'm fairly confident, will turn out good (at least) because its his most recent picture, but the other three I'm not too sure about.

Criterion, if you're listening, get on making blu-rays for all those movies (unless the current ones turn out to be good).

Side Note: I was disappointed with the picture quality of "A Clockwork Orange 40th anniversary edition", but I guess its the best the movie can really get for the way he filmed it (the audio was pretty bad as well). Though, I was glad to see the original aspect ratio being used.

The points actually do expire over time (a pretty long period of time - I think a year or more) once you've redeemed them. I've had them expire 600+ points that I hadn't used in a long time.

But yeah, I just did the same thing, free Bug's Life. Which is great considering it's the one Pixar blu I never bought, waiting for the right price.

"Disney Movie Rewards points may expire if you have not had any Disney Movie Rewards account activity for 210 days or more. 'Activity' is defined as logging into your account at least once." All of them are worth buying except for Spartacus. I would consider Paths of Glory, The Killing (plus Killer's Kiss), Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, and Barry Lyndon to be undoubtedly perfect transfers without knowing any reference point. The rest seem to have some minor filtering, but nothing terrible like DVNR. Even the Warners are worth a blind buy because they're so cheap.
