I recommended these books to my mother, and even lent her the first one. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that was such a good idea.

No, it's not. The entire reason for the prologue is to tell us that Jon warged into Ghost when he died. Now, Melisandre might try and resurrect him, and what happens then'll be interesting. But we already know what happened to Jon.

If we're to take that as Arya's sleeping mind hopping over into her, then warg doesn't know any distance. Sometimes magic is just poorly defined.

I posted a little rant about Martin's progress with the books: http://loopingworld.com/2012/03/02/why-george-rr-martin-cant-finish-his-books/ What annoys me is that for some writers it's a privilege the possibility to commit and focus on one project. Martin has it, but doesn't much care about it.

Martin has "made it" in the sense that he's got to have a ton of money coming in, he's about in his Golden Years, is respected in his profession, and has made an undoubted mark on the cultural landscape. He's doing whatever the gently caress he wants because he can die in 3-15 years having not completed a drat word and still be living large. We should all be "so lucky."

I'm not slagging him off as much as most people on here because I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that all the shortcomings of A Feast With Dragons was due to the fact that it wasn't initially planned. If Winds is the same quality, then yeah, I'll stop caring about the series. Not that there will be a Winds, of course. We are now only a couple of months away from the one year anniversary of the last time GRRM wrote anything.

I thought Dance was better than Clash, easily. If it weren't because of the obvious deficiencies of Feast, it would be my least favorite of the series. Virtually nothing happens until the end and even then the battle of Blackwater isn't that interesting to me. Dance wasn't great, but there were enough neat little character moments and potentially interesting occurances to make me actually excited for Winds.

Clash was the most boring in the series for me; even Feast, for as "little" that happens, was interesting and involving due to the beautiful prose.
