Huh, I might have to give that a look, since they already have Girl Friends that one would make two non terrible yuri type series they've done.

I have it on order and I should be getting it very soon. If no one says anything by then I can post something. ANN reviewed it already and never mentioned any problems with them either.

I own a couple of their releases (Katanagatari, Persona, and Toradora) and while I think they had some issues here and there with the early releases, Katanagatari was perfect except for the subs being somewhat small (which they fixed for Kimi Ni Todoke).

Cool that's more or less what I was curious about, I'm just always worried that some company will do some bizarre thing and I'll end up buying it without knowing about it. I.e. Sawako is now known as Sally! And it's set in Kansas for some reason! Soundtrack is redone and now exclusively features the musical styling of Yanni!

Ok, well that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm glad to hear that it is, in fact, a good release and is worth the purchase.

This is pretty cool:

Wandering Son Manga Joins U.S. Librarians' Rainbow List

quote:

The Rainbow Project, a task force made up of the Social Responsibilities Round Table and the Gay, Lesbian, Transgender and Queer Round Table of the American Library Association released its 2012 Rainbow List last month. The list included Takako Shimura's Wandering Son volume 1 from Fantagraphics Books.

The Rainbow Project presents a list each year of "quality books with significant and authentic GLBTQ content, which are recommended for people from birth through eighteen years of age." Wandering Son is the first manga to make the list. The Rainbow Project released its first list in 2008.

Wandering Son's first volume also made the American Library Association's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) division's list of the top 10 graphic novels for teens in 2012.

I wish it wasn't a digital release only. Maybe it will get a book release too (like Girl Friends is, though that is from a different company). But, welp, more yuri being licensed is nice so I don't have to deal with Konokuniya racking up the prices when I buy them on special order from Japan. I only paid like $8 each for the first 3 volumes for GFs. A years later, I ended up paying $15 for the last two volumes. And they are all only ¥600! :arghfist:

Erica Friedman basically said that she went the digital route because the market for the published books isn't big enough, especially when yuri is a niche genre in a medium where a significant number of the 'fans' refuse to pay money for products.

Here's her explanation here.

On a related note, Love My Life is also going to be added to Jmanga.

Kazehaya's actions at the end there are a bit strange...is it merely disappointment/frustration at not being more physically intimate with Sawako ever since their interrupted kiss? I thought much of it was just that he wants to spend more time alone with her, and maybe that is the case and he just doesn't feel like bringing it up. Hopefully he does though, since letting that fester can't be good.

I think the problem is that Kazehaya has been worried about taking it too fast, especially since he promised Sawa-Dad and Kaze-dad that they would take it slow and date like kids. After the kiss incident, he was freaking out that he "nearly lost control," so I think it's an issue with him on keeping that promise to the parents, and also respecting Sawako and not forcing her to follow his pace.

If I had to guess, this is probably going to have to be resolved with some help from Yano, although for this arc, she might have her hands full with Pin and Kent, who have joined forces and created a pretty terrible love triangle.

Well, part of the problem is that both of them are completely new at this. Despite Kazehaya being incredibly popular with the girls, there's no evidence that he ever actually dated anyone before. It's even worse for Sawako, since even just the concept of people talking to her like a human is a relatively new thing for her. They're both kinda stuck dealing with all of this for the very first time, and neither of them have any idea what to do.

That was a pretty cute little story, not too original I suppose but that's alright, I still have a fondness for that type of story even if I saw the ending coming from practically the first page. You gotta be careful though, too much of it will rot your brain and you'll start seeing it everywhere...like in Bodacious Space Pirates, for example.

The Light Novels of Bodacious Space Pirates actually had a lesbian couple, so I kind of get the feeling they were gunning for that.

Also, some yuri recommendations, since we're still on the topic:
Anything by Fujieda Miyabi, but especially Ame-Iro Kouchakan Kandan. Everything he does is ridiculously light and fluffy. Great pick-me-up works.

Honey & Honey isn't really a yuri series in the traditional sense, but it's a neat and funny little look into Japanese LGBT life. Hopefully it'll be fully translated at some point, so the sequels can get worked on.

Kimochi-no-Katachi is a fairly short series, but it's also a fantastic read. It has a lizard who is the best character. :colbert:

Pieta is one of my personal favorites. It has the style of one of those older yuri dramas, but avoids the whole 'EVERYONE DIES AT THE END' thing that was prevalent in them. It's basically a lesbian soap-opera. The art style is pretty great, too, though the two main characters can be hard to tell apart.

Lastly, Takemiya Jin is shaping up to be the next Takako Shimura. Seriously, her works are great, and you should read them.

Kimi Koi Limit was rather good, looks like the last chapter just came out. At least it looks like a last chapter, with all the thank you's and extra stuff at the end of it. Honey and Honey is indeed pretty great, I had no idea there was more of it than is up on Mangafox, hopefully it'll get worked on by someone sometime. Prism turned out to be a cute series too, I keep thinking that I'm done with the whole genre, but I keep learning about just enough great little series to keep me reading, ah well.

I've read and really enjoyed Fragments of Love by Takemiya Jin, I'm sometimes lazy about looking to see if authors have done more series, I'll have to check out any other of her works that I can find.

Mangoscans version of Kimi ni Todoke just came out, if you prefer their translation you can now read it.

Kodocha has a very special place in my heart. Extremely heartfelt, yet quite insane in a good way at times. It was one of the first series I got on VHS fansub. Unfortunately it never was finished by whichever group was doing it at the time, although you could (and I did) pony up for the HK bootlegs. It's too bad FUNi was so screwed with regard to their own releases (mostly due to the whole licensing fiasco with the opening song). I bought the discs they put out and would have gladly continued to do so for the second half had they finished. Some enterprising individual should re-fansub it all.

I actually prefer the anime in many ways, mostly because I just think it's a lot funnier. The manga's ending is superior, though. Mostly because it actually ends.

I love the Kodocha anime, but yeah, there was no real ending and the NYC (I think) filler was not as good as the rest. I believe Kodocha is the only manga series I own in its entirety, my copies are sadly aged and I'm pretty sure it's out of print now. There's a one-shot floating around (I can't remember if translated or not) that takes place ~10 years after the end of the manga. In it Sana and Akito are together/married and I think they live in LA. He's a massage therapist and she is I think a news anchor. The conflict of the manga is Sana gets pregnant and Akito freaks out since his mom died in childbirth. It's a crossover with one of Obana's other works somehow.

Aoi Hana: 37
Shimura's artwork is back to being in top form this chapter, I mean look at these faces:

She also seems to be sharing some concepts between this and Wandering Son in both of their recent chapters there's a character that wants to use the leads as research subjects for something they're writing.

As for the ending of the chapter:what a crazy huge mix of emotions put into those pages. Akira spontaneously kissing Fumi was amazing, followed up by the next few pages with her question and some of the words from the play that Pon wrote all combine to make a really good portrait of young love: confusion, tenderness, hope, fear, and desire all rolled into one.

The track they seem to be on right now could either be the best thing for them, or the worst. Actually, since they're still young and considering how first loves tend to go, it's probably both at the same time.
