Holy CRAP. I was going to post that but didn't because I figured the amount of people who would have possibly remembered that or would have been in the right region during the right time TO have known what that was would be miniscule. Those WPIX weekend afternoon movies were amazing and introduced to so many things.

I watched so many mediocre movies as a kid on WPIX. That channel was the best. In my area it was replaced with the WB at some point and I think that was the very last time I ever put on channel 11.

What cliche in particular are you sick of that "ruined" Sherlock for you? You might need to lighten up a bit, if it's bothering you that much. Sherlock's the quintessential "quirky cop/detective," they couldn't very well abandon that trope in particular.

It's just the post-CSI cop show thing where the protagonists are judge, jury, and executioner, and things like "due process" never seem to enter the picture except in particular episodes where it's highlighted for narrative convenience.

I'll admit that it's unfair to fault it on the count of "savant hero with doofy sidekick" because they actually treat Watson reasonably well for a Sherlock adaptation. And admittedly, Doyle did do it better than anyone.

I could lighten up, but instead I'm going to go watch more Law & Order, haha.

Hey, when did season 2 of Luther go up? Even though I'm sick to death of quirky cop shows, Luther is good. Not Law & Order good, but for "lone wolf with an off-kilter sidekick" you can't really do better than Idris Elba being a badass with a sociopathic redhead by his side (but usually watching from a distance like a creep).

P.S. When will these shows stop being made, honestly just obsessing over the cliche was enough to ruin Sherlock for me, and make me dread the upcoming Dirk Gently, when I should be urinating myself with joy.
Honestly Luther is only good as a parody; watching him skulk about stalking his ex-wife or befriending murderers is just so amazingly stupid while he solves crimes by making broad assumptions ("Yup, she's guilty; she only blinked twice during the interrogation") pretty much ruined it as being taken seriously. But it was generally a good dark comedy to see this sociopath cop harass, stalk, and yell at people to sometimes maybe solve a case.

Check out Peter and the Wolf (2006). It's visual storytelling, stop-motion animation, and best of all, it's really short!

And if that wets your whistle for some more stop-motion, A Town Called Panic is still on there. It's rapid-fire slapstick kinda like Robot Chicken.

Sorry if it's been mentioned already, but I just watched Punching the Clown and loved it. It's about a comedian, singer/songwriter (similar to Stephen Lynch I guess) trying to make it big in Hollywood. Some of the scenes are basically a documentary of him singing his songs, which are very funny. The rest of the film is similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm in both style and humor.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm doing a horrible job describing the movie but check it out. I watched the movie on a whim and was pleasantly surprised.

Level of acting makes a huge difference. Idris Elba can sell anything. In this case it's not that I believe Luther can determine crap like that, but I believe that he has enough belief in his own convictions that he convinced himself that he can.

Honestly I don't so much want to argue that Luther is a better show than Sherlock, I'm mostly trying to say that there's a huge glut of ridiculous detective shows, and personally I'll watch whatever has "better" actors (re: people I don't irrationally dislike) or a "better" portrayal of the judicial system (re: L&O).

As always it comes to personal taste and willingness to over/underthink things.

Related tangent: So glad I've got a chance to watch early Law & Order. I am so impressed at the consistent quality and tone that the show managed to maintain over, what, 20 seasons? Also as a whippersnapper I had never caught Michael Moriarty as Stone before, and I'm such a big fan now. As my dad pointed out, these early seasons, each episode is better treated as watching a movie than a tv show, in terms of direction and pacing.

I LOVE the early seasons of L&O. Somewhere on another thread, someone mentioned how in the pre-Giuliani era you could "feel the paint peeling off the walls" of the police station, and it seemed a lot grittier and worn-down. I wholeheartedly agree with that, and the greater intensity is fantastic for it. Granted, I haven't seen an era of the show I didn't like (I'm past Netflix onto the first Green year), but the early stuff was something to see.

Does Supernatural ever get interesting? It seems like EVERY SINGLE EPISODE follows the same framework of "Brothers squabble about dad->Rumor of new monster->They adopt a terrible disguise to interrogate the locals, who invariably see through their paper-thin ruse->There will be an attractive blonde women in distress->Monster defeated, more Dadchat, drive off into the sunset"

I watched it too! I was a bit nervous in the first 10-15 minutes cause it seemed like they initially didn't have enough visual elements to drive the story forward, but they actually ended up doing a good job. I think it could have been 20-30 minutes shorter though. But still pretty entertaining

I thought it was pretty interesting when the film was focusing on the two guys arguing, but when it got to the point when they were fighting over who owns the rights to what it went downhill.

I really want to know the back story of how Peter and Raymond ended up living together.

Yes, Punching the Clown is great. Henry Phillips is great. It's a semi-autobiographical story about life on the road as a comedian.

Speaking of which, Life is on instant now, a show that follows this formula that I ended up enjoying, probably solely because of Damian Lewis' performance. It follows all the familiar tropes of those shows and there's an infamously terrible scene on youtube where a computer password is hidden inside a Prince of Persia level by criminal hackers, but other than that, its pretty alright!

If you're watching Season 1 then that's what a lot of it is, mainly because they didn't know if they'd get a second season so they play down the mythology stuff until much later. The last 4 or 5 episodes of Season 1 get more interesting and then it's pretty much all systems go from there. There's also some hilarious episodes coming up.

I just rewatched this last night as well - it's a great farcical sort of French comedy. Jean Dujardin has such a massively expressive face it's impossible to not find his performance charming. The song he plays after his cover is blown in the aforementioned scene is fantastic as well.

Other highlights:
- sight gags like the jump cut to his messed-up hair becoming instantly coiffed after he slicks it back.
- The be-fezzed enemy agent who WON'T STOP reporting OSS 117's location, even to his employer's annoyance.
- The foot chase where he gradually becomes lost and eventually asks directions back to his hotel (to no avail).

This is so wonderfully, squirmingly awkward. It's basically all the douchiness/awkwardness of Billy Mitchell and his sycophants from King of Kong without a pesky narrative in the way of it all. The scene with the guy with the room full of framed pornography lovingly unwrapping his newest addition to his collection is just awful.

Okay that does it, I'm watching the episodes with the roller-dancing and the bee cannon tomorrow.

I'm watching the Gate right now. Putting it as the median between the Goonies and Hobgoblins would be accurate, but Hobgoblins was its own kind of bad - I'd put The Ghoulies at the other end of that dial.

Anyway, it's a cheesy movie, but fun to watch to laugh at the old clothes and hair (a Killer Dwarfs jacket?! are you making GBS threads me?) and yeah, the film's "YOU'VE BEEN BAAAAAAAD!!" moment is freaky as hell and would've made me poo poo myself as a kid.

Yeah, it really picks up towards the end of the first season and then takes off in the second season. In my opinion, it keeps that momentum all the way through season five. Season six and current season seven I don't think is that bad, but definitely not quite as good as seasons 2-5.
