Nah man, that video is already in the top 3 things I've enjoyed from my few years reading these threads (one of them being that time a goon handed Jon Fitch a photoshop I did of him). It was really well made too like Save Russian Jews said.

You know how The Fight Nerd tries to be the "funny" mma journalist? Well he stinks and I wish you could actually be in that position. Please move out to the states and get a job interviewing fighters and making poo poo up as you go.

This is one one weirdly unfocused article:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1093917-strikeforce-why-american-society-needs-ronda-rousey

quote:

American society needs Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. More specifically, millions of young girls need her as a role model, someone to look up to and emulate.

Think about it.

America faces a cultural crisis regarding the current generation of young women. Who do they have to look up to? What inspirational females are there for them? What heroes do they have?

Is there a Marie Curie to inspire them to study science? Is there a Billie Jean King to get them to believe they are equal in athletic (and societal) standing to males?

No.

Today there are only the idiotic ravings of the Kardashian family, Snooki, and the classless dredges of society displayed on "16 and pregnant."

But there is an answer to this cultural malaise and her name is Ronda Rousey.

Rousey is the perfect role model for a young girl growing up in our increasingly decadent society.

She is a hard worker, as indicated by her dedication to training and her Olympic bronze medal in Judo.

She's also quite witty, a silver-tongued devil who some people love to hate. This wit is the product of intelligence and an understanding of how the world works.

Rousey knew being nice didn't sell tickets and generate press, so she wasn't nice. Some would say that this "questionable" moral fiber of Rousey makes her a poor role model but those people aren't seeing the big picture.

Rousey did those things because they were good for her career. Also, what's wrong with having an edge? Women should have a bit of fire to them lest they always be at the beck and call of an overbearing man.

Okay, I see where you're going with this but what a really weird way of going about it... not to mention terrible ways of structuring your articles.

quote:

Another point to make about Rousey is that she has the intelligence to understand how to promote herself, yet she never completed high school or went to college. This seems like another fact that puts her out of the role model category but, again, that's a myopic viewpoint.

What

quote:

The American education system is undergoing a paradigm shift. No longer is a college degree going to get you a good or even decent job; degrees are swift becoming not worth the paper they're printed on yet the prices of obtaining them are constantly skyrocketing (some call this the education bubble).

How the gently caress did this article go from Ronda Rousey as a role model to a critique of the American educational system?

quote:

Ronda Rousey is a role model that reflects this change in the world. Her success can teach children that they can find their own path outside of the decaying American education system.

What the hell

quote:

Furthermore, Rousey's not-so-inconsiderable looks play a part in why she's a potential role model. She didn't obtain those looks through plastic surgery or some form of eating disorder. She is natural and her figure was obtained by simply working hard.

Are you loving serious

quote:

America needs her more then people know; Rousey is the hero that American girls need right now, just not the one they're bombarded with.

Yeah, why should fighters who actually graduated from college then went on to be successful fighters be role models?

I hate that article so much and whoever wrote it. I may need to quit reading this thread because it only upsets me.

I actually kind of agree with the central point of this article that it is good for girls to have role models who aren't in traditional female gender roles (Danica McKellar is pretty cool) but you're right that the article does a terrible job expressing the sentiment.

The educational bubble is a real (if contentious) thing, but it doesn't belong in an article about Ronda Rousey.

I think that article infected me, this post is written in the same stilted style.

Seriously, what the hell is going on in this mess. He starts off with a perfectly valid point and then just kind of completely drops the ball. He specifically points out people like Kim Kardashian and Snooki that are famous for nothing and are shameless self promoters, but then goes on to point to Ronda's self promoting as an asset. I think this isn't really the greatest angle to go with right off the bat.

Then out of no where he's talking about the educational system. He doesn't even mention that rousey didn't graduate high school, I only figured it out from a commenter.

I would have gone with something along the lines of what Grifter said. Shes a rising female star in a very male dominated sport. She's hard working, tough, and knows how to promote herself as such, which is why she should be considered a role model.

also, this was posted on bloody elbow and made me chuckle.

And Vermont makes 46 (also DC regulates MMA, so I guess we're at 47/51?).

So, to update,

States that do not regulate MMA:
-Alaska (no athletic commission, but MMA is legal and events are run regularly)
-Montana (athletic commission does not regulate MMA, but MMA is legal and fighters must be licensed; licensing is mostly just a signed physician's evaluation)
-Connecticut (MMA explicitly illegal)
-New York (MMA explicitly illegal)

Btw, the active Connecticut bill just passed what is probably the final committee vote by a 13-1 vote before it is brought to the Senate floor. If it passes the Senate it goes directly to the House and then the Governor.

In like 4 months or so, New York might become the last state in the country where MMA is explicitly illegal.
