New Gunplay mixtape, on first listen it's really good. Haven't noticed anything quite as wild as his verse on Cartoons and Cereal but he's close. MMG hopefully gonna get him a little success (they got Wale a #1 album, they can do anything). It's kinda short, but I wanted to hear more so it's doing it's job hyping up his next album. edit-also I'm pretty sure the if they released an album of 45 minutes of cartoons and cereal it would be the best album this year alansmithee fucked around with this message at 03:48 on Mar 10, 2012 |

Okay, if you like that, then I can definitely unload some more stuff on you, but I would honestly suggest going and getting some of DJ Premier's mixes or sets he did because I learned about a ton of stuff just from that. He's pretty good about identifying the names of the tracks and the mixtapes I've downloaded have been mostly that NY grimy 90s stuff, but it depends on what time period he released it in. DJ Premier - Crooklyn Cuts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJo_H0V7DRk DITC - DITC [Really, you can get anything by them and its good, but if you listen to big L you probably already know] Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTCOeH_d5h0&list=FLzeA6WZrdTR5JJUi8xuwr8Q&index=98&feature=plpp_video Herb McGruff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnEWTf9MeYQ&list=FLzeA6WZrdTR5JJUi8xuwr8Q&index=17&feature=plpp_video Boogiemonsters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1_6BkTUCHg&list=FLzeA6WZrdTR5JJUi8xuwr8Q&index=18&feature=plpp_video Punk Barbarians - Sex Props Cream & The Drama in Between http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAW7bWURaeE Da Youngstas - Ill Make U Famous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-2OL0TZzPM Bahamadia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIxNPJqKGS4 Lord Finesse Sadat X OC - Word...Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaOy_xdXr9k&feature=related Group Home That should be a pretty good start Diodeous fucked around with this message at 21:05 on Mar 10, 2012 |

You surrs? Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and Ghostface's first 2 solo albums are a must. And then Raekwon and Ghostface remained the most consisent going into the 21st century so maybe listen to some of those albums if you want more from them. Masta Killa had a debut album that I kinda liked. I didn't like Meth's or ODB's first albums but people say they're good. This Gunplay's newest video. o_o It is scary hype. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHMkcnPCQ7M

Haha, I think it's weird you say what are the ones that stand out besides gza and rebel ins. Like dude said OBFCL1+2 are straight classics(especially the first)Ghost is always good and so is Meth. They are the 3 consistently good standout members. The whole clan is good but just get anything by Meth Rae n Ghost and you can do no wrong.

I can't really hate on any solo Wu-Tang albums. It seems pretty consistent that I dig about half the tracks on all of them. I'm going to shout out Bobby Digital and RZA's Birth of a Prince just because they're on the tip of my tongue.

I used to wear out Bobby Digitals first two albums and seconding Ghostface's first two. I'd get meth and reds albums. Even though they're a lot more tongue in cheek they both compliment each other well and rap circles around 95% of any rapper ever.

It feels kinda odd even having to mention this here but... Pretty much the first group of Wu albums are all considered classic or near it (36 Chambers, OB4CL, Ironman, Tical, Return to the 36 chambers, Liquid Swords). The end of the big Wu era was Wu Tang Forever. After that, things get a lot more spotty. Rza didn't handle the production like he did on those, so the sound starts changing. Only Ghost put out consistently good/great stuff (and it's arguable supreme clientele is better than ironman). Rae did a bunch of junk before OB4CL2 which was decent. Gza's albums got progressively more boring, Meth forgot how to rap when he was trying to be a pop star, and that was about it. Dirty's second album is actually pretty good, but goofy at times. The first Bobby Digital was so far out of left field that people didn't know what to do with it (despite the fact that it's IMO the best thing Rza's done since the first group of Wu stuff). Didn't like the second one as much. Everything else is just kinda meh to me. The other dudes never got solos with good Rza production so they don't really get mentioned with the rest. Some of the affiliates actually had some decent output, but there was always a couple of duds it seemed to me. Also if you want some more recent "old" NY feel check out Prodigy's "Return of The Mac" which is imo the best thing Alchemist ever produced. And on Gunplay, MMG works to get their dudes out and promoted, which is a big change for a lot of those vanity label deals. It also helps that pretty much everyone they sign is actually pretty good at the whole rap thing. Also looking at that video got me wondering, do they hire actors to play the chumps in rap videos or what? Is it their friends they just get to joke around? A bunch of videos always have a dude getting clowned on or being a punk in some way and i can't imagine how that would be something anyone would want to do (unless it's for a lot of cash).

Currently about 3/4 of the way through Big K.R.I.T.'s 4eva N A Day, I've never listened to any of his music before and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. I'd always seen his name in this thread and all the hip hop blogs but for some reason I just never bothered to check out anything. I really like this mixtape but I honestly have no idea how often I would really put it on after this. Forgot to ask: does he produce all his own tracks? I read he does some producing but the only production credits that I have this is "guitar by x"

I remember hearing some Gravediggaz years ago and it was good, with that ill RZA sound that I miss. Mike Tysons CARFAX: He is good, but his first mixtape, Krit wuz Here, (as was stated earlier in this thread I think) was reeeeally good. It was a lot more well realized, in terms of his "message" songs, and the beats were a lot doper in my opinion. And for the record, he did make the beat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbG7tMyhjJQ

Oh, I was gonna post this in the phiz rap thread since that's what spurned the thought but that thing is a disaster so I wanted to talk here. If anyone didn't know, MURS is doing some sort of anime/comic rap album and he's got a kickstarter going for it. Now, i'm having difficulty remembering anything more embarrassing for someone who at one time had actual rap cred (although I'm sure there are things). But that got me thinking, it must be kinda rough for all those dudes from the 90's who got started rapping and just kinda continued, but never broke through. I know J-Zone talks about it a lot, where you're someone who had/has an obvious fanbase so you're kinda expected to have money and opportunities and stuff, but that fanbase is shrinking/shrunk to a level where you can't really meet up with the expectations. J-Zone said he pretty much gave up because he realized that he wasn't gonna get big bank doing the rap thing (although he's a lot less-known than a bunch of the 90's/00's underground dudes) but that it's hard for a lot of them to quit. And just made me think that you hear about a bunch of these dudes on tour, doing albums that maybe 5k people actually check for (not to mention buy), etc and it's kinda depressing. Now MURS has done a bunch of work and maybe he honestly just loves horrible anime comics (and it DOES look horrible), but this looks like something just to try to keep his name out/money in his pockets. And a lot of people used to be able to grab deals here and there, but there's a lot less "big" indie rap labels than there used to be (most the newer dudes seem to get hooked up mainly with vanities, indie rock labels, or just start their own poo poo) so that avenue isn't as much of an option (maybe that's why Cage decided to become an emo band frontman?). But for whatever reason, dudes just keep grinding away instead of moving on. That was a bit disorganized and I'm not sure if I exactly got my point across, but pretty much Murs has made some genuinely good music (the first 3:16 album with 9th wonder is really good and the best thing each has done IMO) and it's kinda sad he's down to asking for money to spit anime rhymes on kickstarter.

It seems like a lot of the guys who were getting hyped back then have had a difficult time adjusting to whatever style self-promotion is needed to get a buzz on the internet. Since the blogs rarely have an attention span longer than a month or so, getting them to pay attention to veterans in addition to all the new folks seems really difficult. The music industry has always milked young talents and then kick them to the curb as they age. The web has certainly sped up the cycle and makes the later attempts to gain attention more public. Unless you've built up a cult following your able to continue to nurture, like Atmosphere or Hiero seem to have, your kind of powerless once the main music industry has passed you over. I guess a kickstarter is better than taking out a bunch of loans yourself, but if your at that point you need to come to terms with the lack of demand for new music from you. He'll get to see if there are enough people out there that really want his anime rap. edit: Murs has almost 200,000 Facebook fans (more than Rhymesayers or Hiero) and it looks like he'll probably match his goal and the world will get to hear his anime raps. snyprmag fucked around with this message at 21:42 on Mar 12, 2012 |

Masta Killa's No Said Date is solid. I haven't checked out the sequel to Cuban Lynx but I hear it's a great followup. I always had a soft spot for RZA's Birth of a Prince, but it might be an acquired taste -- never hear anyone else mention it. Wu Massacre was a welcome return to the old school Wu-Tang unity (Meth, Ghost, and Rae), but it can't really compete with the classics (still good on its own though). All the songs I've heard off Method and Redman's Blackout (the first one) have been really catchy, so you might wanna give that a listen. Also check out Killah Priest's Heavy Mental. And he's not Wu-Tang related, but early Jeru the Damaja is sick. I think his first album is almost flawless. You may be interested that Liquid Swords 2 is slated for release this year.
