He comes across as nothing, because literally the only time we've really seen him is crying at his wife's side in a weird dream flash-back thing. That's the closest to 'in person' we've gotten. Beyond that, he's a cipher. He could be the anti-Christ, he could be the cuddliest soldier in the entire army of misfit toys, he could just be some bloke with good and bad points. There is literally nothing to base information on but third party reports from highly biased sources. Not talking to your daughter alone for years without a word a fairly dick move though, so that's one strike against him.

Hey now, that's not entirely true. In the flashback in the chapter Ties, we saw him in person. As a kid, yes, but still in person. In that chapter, as a kid, he was already aloof and distant, which I'd say is fairly consistent with his adult personality according to Eglamore, Donald, etc. Seeing that short scene with him as a kid, I really wouldn't doubt him growing up to be an equally distant and aloof father, even to the point of negligence. Also, going back and reading that chapter, I am now interested to see what comes up from the Brinnie character. Her dialogue is written in a way that seems to be mimicking a heavy russian accent, and I can't help but feel like she'll be related to Gamma in some way.

Brinnie is Germanic/Scandanavian, with strong Norse ties. She teleports by drawing a valknut and apparently she is the valkyrie Brynhildr, sent to Earth by Odin, according to Tom.

So there is a webcomic poll going around, and I thought I'd participate. When I looked at the results afterwards, I found that Gunnerkrigg is currently trailing behind Looking For Group and Goblins. This just won't do.

Gunnerkrigg Court (10%, 781 Votes) Looking For Group (10%, 777 Votes) Much better. Looks like MSPA overtook XKCD's rabid fanbase.

At least Hark, a vagrant and Gunnerkrigg are up near the top.

Tollymain posted:What's Pibgorn anyway? It started off as a quaint story about a pianist who rescued a fairy and meet a lady demon. Then the government tried to kidnap the fairy. Then torture porn where women were impaled by spiked trees growing through them. Then a pleasant detour with "A Midsummer nights dream". Then the pianist became Mozart and got laid. Sometime after that a Bogart copycat demon tortured the lady demon. The bogart copycat was redeemed because he felt sorry for torturing killing the lady demon he so loved. Sometime after that there was a fling between a vampire and an alien. More gross implied sex. That lead to a war of the worlds "homage" with more implied sex. Then the fairy becomes death. Somehow that lead to the Bogart ripoff torturing the daughter of the lady demon. The two fell in love with each other. This is in a world where the me I don't know what the current storyline is. I wish it was still posted to the comic strip mega thread just to see what happens next. Maybe it needs its own thread. Edit: I almost forgot. Men in the comic are either demonic torturers of women or they are happy to be emasculated and dependent on women. Women are strong, "attractive", and inclined to either have sex, save lives, or be tortured in horrible ways for prolonged periods of time. There's also a creepy farmer who makes regular crossovers between 9CL and Pibgorn. He doesn't torture women but he does want to have hand-sex with a grandmother in 9CL. We give Mookie a hard time but at least he isn't as bad as Brooke McGams. RandomPauI fucked around with this message at 12:08 on Mar 11, 2012 |

Pibgorn is done by the guy who draws 9 Chickweed Lane. It's filled with his love of gams and various fetishes. It's horrible, horribly drawn, etc etc. It's brought up all the time in the comic strip megathread.

Fangz posted:Maybe Anthony only wanted to communicate with Donald, and he only had Jones' number, and he had no actual intent to speak to Annie at all, aside from being forced to by Jones handing the phone to her. That's why he used a code only Don would know. This was a pretty accurate guess. Good job! All Mr. Carver needed was to use the satellite. But for what purpose, I wonder. (also poor Annie, it wasn't even a real message to her )

Well, it looks like Anthony has lost one of his few defenders with that trick. Unless Donald can cover for him on Wednesday I don't see Annie having a positive opinion of her father from here on out.

And why couldn't he just talk to Don? There's got to be some reason Mr. Horrible Dad is being such a nonchalantly horrible dad. I mean, Surma saw something in him. It's also interesting that he had to contact Annie / Don through Jones.

Either Annie's father is a callous prick who would exploit his daughter's name to her own face in order to communicate with his genius friend, or he is an incredible genius who can tell his daughter how much he loves her while communicating to his techno-wizard buddy. Win-win? Please?

I like seeing Donald have such a range of expressions in this one. He always seemed sort of constantly serenely calm all the other times we saw him. Apart from that one time that he was being shy, as a kid.

I bet he named her, too... I rescind my notion that he's finding a cure. I think we may have a contender for biggest jerk hole in Gunnerkrigg. In this corner, weighing in as fat as hell, Diego! And in this corner weighing in via satellite because he can't be bothered to be around, Anthony Carver! FIGHT TO THE DEA- Oh, Diego died...

Okay, so Anthony is a bad father etc. etc. What I'm really interested in is just what kind of situation he's in that requires him to keep such distant, clipped, encrypted communication with the court. Why can't he speak freely? Why can't he spare a moment to talk to his daughter before he sends his message? Does this relate to the fuzzy signal on the phone? The way it was routed through an operator? Does it hint at some reason that Anthony couldn't get in contact before?

But nothing's ever that easily resolved with this story. Right now his new name is Casey Anthony Carver.
