Drinking a Ninkasi Tricerahops and a DFH 90 Minute IPA side-by-side right now. Hard to say which I like more at this point. The 90 Minute might have a slight lead. They are pretty similar. Tricerahops has a bit more malt character and depth and the 90 Minute is a bit more interesting aromatically. Both are damned good beers.

Samuel Adams' Facebook had a link to this story today, I thought it was interesting. http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/story/2012-03-04/cnbc-sunoco-beer/53323880/1 Basically, Sunoco stations are putting Growler stations inside the gas station and rotating different craft beers. Since in a lot of places growler stations are hard to come by, this is good news even though at the moment it is only being expanded to South Carolina. Please let it come to Ohio.  Bonus: lots of "great this just means more drinking and driving!"-type comments below the story! Because as we all know, you're more likely to drink out of a giant glass jug while driving, than drinking out of the convenient and discreet 12 oz. bottles they already sell at gas stations. ugh.

Holy cow Sierra Nevada's 30th Anniversary Grand Cru is excellent. It's a blend of oak aged Bigfoot, Pale Ale, and Celebration Ale. Huge caramel sweetness upfront with an intense dark chocolate that yields to slight orange citrus and finishes with a floral pine hop finish that lingers for a bit. This is excellent, great sipper.

Therefore my band drinks in the van while driving through Alabama (not the driver, we're not complete idiots). I didn't know Mississippi had a similar law, I'm going to have to look that one up. Ugh. TBA was released today, the collab between Stone/Fat Head's/Bear Republic, and it's available at Fat head's near me. I want to go buy a couple bottles (Probably 3-4...) but it's $4/bottle, and it's an hour drive each way for me... so with $4/gallon gas prices, it looks like I could end up paying $30 for 4 bottles of beer. It sounds really, really delicious, but I'm not sure I'm willing to just suck it up and make the trek up there...

That's mostly due to the loud-rear end music and not at all homey/intimate decor. The beer selection is very good for Vegas, and it's nice to have another place doing cask pours. It suffers from the usual Strip pricing problem ($9 for the local adjuct lager I can find a sixer of for $7?). There were some uncommon things on tap, like Oro de Calabaza - served too cold, but thankfully that's something that fixes itself over time. The unique thing about Public House is they have cicerones. In theory this is a good thing. In practice, the cicerone that came to our table was some kind of loving caricature of beer spergelord. He had a loving waxed moustache, for Christ's sake. One of those that looks greasy under the nose and gets shiner and more disgusting as its ends curl a complete, 2-inch-wide loop on each side. It took all of my self control to not laugh at it when I first saw him. To be fair, he knew what he was talking about and could immediately answer my question about the local brewery's stout. He was obviously competent, but someone needs to hold him down and pluck that facial abomination off his lip one stringy, greasy hair at a time.

That is a shame. Everyone knows that the most knowledgeable of beer aficionados have to grow out their scraggly beards with as little maintenance done on them as possible. Otherwise they are untrustworthy. I went to the Thirsty Monk in Asheville once and literally every employee had one. Also echoing the Stone-collab sentiment above.

I really hope that place survives because the strip is pretty much all about macro beer and they will have to find that right tempo of getting someone to try new things and educating. I might be going for Evo this summer and I'll check it out.

So... Ballast Point people... Whats the difference between Big Eye and Sculpin? Both IPAs. Both from Ballast Point... only a .2% difference in ABV..... I can get Big Eye easily. Sculpin is impossible to find at any distributor...

Yard House is an overly loud place with too many things on tap for any of it to be fresh, and yes, the food does kinda blow. Burger Bar was the first place on the Strip to have anything good beer-wise, and as far as I know it's still quite good for both food and drinks. There's a sort of new spot in an old casino that has become worth checking out, in my opinion: The Pub in the Mirage. Their selection is at least equal to Public House, better in some ways. They don't usually have stuff on cask, and they're handicapped by the standard casino BMC contract (9/10 of your taps must be a Bud/Miller/Coors product), but they have good things on tap and a very nice bottle selection. Prices are a bit lower than Public House as well; variety of food is lower, but the quality is fine. The managers are trying to move away from the frat house atmosphere and into a more good-beer-centric service model, and it can't hurt to throw them some business if you're in the area. (Full disclosure: one of my friends is a manager there. The more support they get via good beer purchases and good feedback, the better their chances of further improving things.) Other than that, the best places are all off-Strip. And the best places are drat good.

If you can't find Sculpin now, you'll find it soon enough. They're going through another big expansion (BP won the World Beer Cup as "Small Brewer of the Year," but don't qualify in that category anymore because of the previous expansion) and they just added a bunch of huge fermenters. In fact, I saw some pictures on their feed showing pallets of Sculpin headed for both Texas and Ohio, two markets they apparently weren't in before.

I actually head over there pretty often and I can say that they are pretty good. They have a great selection and they recently just expanded their growler selection. The staff is pretty knowledgeable about their beer as well; one guy always has 3-4 recommendations for me just based on what I tell him I like about a different beer (He's tried most if not all of the beers I've asked about and regularly tries out the new stuff they rotate in). I can't say how they compare to Greens because I've only been there once a couple of months ago so I've sort of forgotten what they carried, but Hop City is definitely my go-to place.
