In all seriousness, I think I've read that there isn't really a "light side of the Force" so much as it's "the Force and its dark side", which I suppose is what leads to Lucas's explanation that the destruction of the Sith would bring balance to the Force.

Kind of makes me think of the Machete order post from last week. Sticking that bad boy between episodes 5 and 6 might actually kick rear end.

Reading about George's latest canon-clarifications about the Force or whatever else he decrees fills me with a sort of bemused pity as he single-handedly destroys his own creation, piece by piece.

What I'm really looking forward to is, I don't know, maybe 40 years after George kicks the bucket, someone out there in Hollywood is going to be like, "Let's reboot Star Wars". And then they will. I'm genuinely curious what it's going to look like. Whether they'll stick to George's "vision" or if they'll tear it down and rebuild it into something better.

So does anyone happen to know of some books similar in tone to the Rogue Squadron series? Obviously off in their own little series or whatever.

There are a lot of trilogies that are basically standalones that might fit the sort of tone you're looking for - the Han Solo ones, Lando, maybe even Coruscant Nights (although I only read the first one of that) but the only other "side-series" that comes to mind is the Traviss Clone Saga which I do not and never will endorse.

On the other hand, I, Jedi and the Stackpole/Allston NJO books are basically continuations of the Rogue/Wraith Squadron series.

I'm really hoping that the series continues Star Trek-style after Lucas' death, with a potential new trilogy being the Deep Space Nine of Star Wars. (In that Gene Roddenberry would have hated DS9, but it is objectively the best Star Trek series.)

I feel that The Truce At Bakura is somewhat close in tone. Obviously others will disagree with me on that, but I like them both. Possibly The New Rebellion as well, although that's probably a less likely prospect. Those are both stand-alone books, though, and no side-series come to mind that haven't been mentioned already.

I feel that LOTF could have been like this, if they'd asked Aaron Allston to write the whole series himself. He probably would have done a better job of keeping the whole war story angle on track.

I read that book in the early or mid-90s around the same time as Rogue Squadron and really liked it. I don't know how well it holds up, but probably at least as well as the Star Wars EU.

I felt like TaB was pretty lovely, but then again, the first EU books I read where Zahn, so nearly everything else was a letdown. Alliston's Rogue Squadron books were an exception (Stackpole's were not).

I will say I rather enjoy, more or less, the NJO books post-"Star by Star", but that's mostly because they actually start winning. What it boils down to, I think, is that if I want a crapsack world with grey-grey morality, where any main character could be the next to die and the ones who win end up turning bad anyways, I'll read R. Scott Bakker.

If I want the story that's entertaining for a few hours, has an internal plot with a couple of overarching plot elements, has people acting in comparatively sane ways and the good guys win at the end without long-term characters dying, I'll pick up a Star Wars book.

I'd forgotten that Allston was releasing Mercy Kill this year, which is good. But it's plot has something to do with one of FOTJ's stupid subplots, which is bad.

Oh, Apocalypse comes out tomorrow. I finally get to see how Troy Denning is going to gently caress this up.

EDIT:Forgot which lovely series the Moff subplot was in.

Also, the host of this "thing" Del Ray puts out called this a "golden age" for the EU, right before his little chat with Denning :suicide:

In a nutshell. I've been keeping up on the Fate of the Jedi series, but they're I'll be surprised if they get re-read at all. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I've had to replace my Wraith Squadron X-Wing books more than once as a result of them just falling apart.

Truce at Bakura isn't bad relative to all the other crap out there right now.

Sure it was absurd at the time, but now in hindsight it looks pretty good. The only truly offensive thing I can remember are the silly bad guys and their eeeeeeevil plan to suck the souls out of everyone.

Also the book introduced the idea of Alliance escort carriers.

I don't know. The thing that sticks in my mind, for some reason, is how immature Luke came off as.

But yes, the grain of salt I'll append to this is that my uncle was the Star Wars fan, and the only 4 books he had were TaB and the first Zahn trilogy, and this was years and years ago. So my mind may be exacerbating the difference between the two authors.

The difference is huge. Large swaths of Truce at Bakura are completely ridiculous. Only a small part of the premise doesn't suck--that the Rebellion picked off Empire supporting planets during the chaos after the Emperor's death by being first responders to local crises.

I guess my problem is that the majority of the Star Wars books I've read, I read when I was about fourteen or fifteen, so I wasn't terribly discerning as regards the quality of the plot. Nostalgia's tricking me.

That's really well done! Young Heath Ledger would have been an awesome Anakin. All-Australian Star Wars! :australia:

Owen as a Jedi is an idea I've always liked as well. In the ROTJ novelization (maybe early script drafts too, can't remember) Obi-Wan reveals that Owen was his brother. I would have liked to see Lucas run with that idea in the prequels. Would have made the decision to place Luke with Owen more natural.
