The reason why Sandra Fluke was called a slut was because the Republicans are sexually aroused by inflicting suffering and death. A person dying of an treatable illness is like the cumshot in a porno to them, and they interpreted Sandra Fluke's description of her friend's troubles as dirty pillow talk.

My mom and I have both had our share of Facebook run-ins with conspiracy theorists, and the newest conspiracy seems to be the "inevitable" impeachment of "traitor Obama". My mom very quickly debunked the video she was linked. It was a bunch of smaller videos edited together, and she noticed one of the videos they used was Joe Biden speaking about Iraq 5 years ago, but they edited it to make him say "Syria" instead, implying he was going to impeach Obama.

The video I was linked to is a bit less...subtle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkRcfy4t6CM&feature=g-u-u&context=G28b1048FUAAAAHgAJAA

It's basically a shaky-cam video of someone discussing the articles on their website, located here: http://www.infowars.com/

I make it a habit not to trust YouTube videos for...well...anything political, so I checked out the site myself. It's your typical, run of the mill conspiracy website. An entire section devoted to 9/11 Trutherism, headlines like "The UN: A Eugenics Murdering Cult That's Killed More People Than Hitler" and a pretty mean streak in regards to Obama (The Traitor).

Why do they hate the UN so much? That's like an overarching theme that runs through all of their conspiracy theories. I remember reading in TFR's "overheard at the range" thread (or whatever it's called) that crazy people (overheard) there kept talking about the "blue helmets" who were coming to take your guns away.

The UN is so...ineffective. What are they afraid of?

To me it seems like there is a thread of rabid nationalism running through most of the anti-UN poo poo since its a supranational organization. They're afraid of someone else telling America, the greatest nation on Earth, what to do.

A lot of it is wrapped up in literal (read: frought with mental gymnastics and figurative equivalencies to support an a priori conclusion) readings of Revelations. The idea is that since there's ideas of the Antichrist becoming a powerful ruler of the world and giving everyone a mark, that's got to be tied in to literal ideas of a one world government (but of course the specifics of how the Antichrist's regime will come to power and what it'll do aren't literal, we can tie anything we want to those). Accordingly, you've got the UN which shows up and- oh poo poo! Supernational organization! Do you think maybe they're gonna elect the Antichrist (re: whatever politician we're most afraid of this year) as their leader and take our guns away and put chips in our brains?

Why yes, yes we do think that. Because see if you take this one verse and squint at it the right way then [long, sustained farting noise]

Infowars? Isn't Infowars a notorious conspiracy website? Looking at the page, it has entire sections devoted to New World Order and 9/11 Trutherism.

An actual headline from Infowars: "The UN: A Eugenics Murdering Cult That's Killed More People Than Hitler".

I wouldn't trust this website's reliability as far as I could throw its servers, even less so a shaky-cam YouTube video

which he responded with:

him posted:

Lol because the news you get is filtered FYI the UN was found sterilizing women in Africa google it as for the video he said google the bill. No joke if you do your research you'll find about 80+% of it is true

I know exactly where these kinds of posts lead. Heck, just to reaffirm my understanding of these arguments, I already googled what he's talking about. Sure enough, literally every hit on the first page is a conspiracy website or blog.

It would break down as follows:

Me: [post about the credibility of his sources, mixed feelings towards conspiracy websites, perhaps a funny anecdote about The DaVinci Code]

Him: [response of how the MAINSTREAM MEDIA goes out of its way to halt access to the real news stories because, I dunno, the Illuminati or some poo poo told them to]

Me: [post about how he's conflating "posting conspiracy theories no honest media source would touch" with "these dishonest media sources are the only ones brave enough to post the truth!"]

Him: [unironic application of the word "sheep", then a demand to prove his points wrong]

Me: [several links to credible news sources proving his points wrong]

Him: [response about how my sources are actually controlled by {boogeyman} and that my credibility has been lost by posting them]

There. I just saved myself six frustrating hours of my life and two and a half hours of awkwardness tomorrow in class.

edit: Though I did find it funny that even he admits that only 80% of what the guy's saying in the video he posted was true. That's 20% more understanding than most people I know who are into conspiracies.

It was "illegal" to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler's Germany. Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at the time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers. If today I lived in a Communist country where certain principles dear to the Christian faith are suppressed, I would openly advocate disobeying that country's antireligious laws.

An unfortunate fact of the world is that complex problems exist which cannot be neatly conveyed in a line or three, particularly to an outwardly unreceptive audience. Institutional racism, I would certainly be inclined to say, is one of them.

I forgive you, Will. Will you forgive me?
Here's the one I got today (from my laywer!)

quote:

I know you get a lot of garbage every day in your Inbox. This won’t take long to read. Take a moment!

Every American should read these two books and take from them what your heart gives you. You must search your heart and make your own decision. Be honest with yourself.

“A Coil of Rage”

I bought and read Obama's two books, Audacity of Hope and Dreams From My Father. You should too. Rather than listen to rants or spin by either supporters or detractors, inform yourself from his own words. Don’t rely on FOX or CNN. Carefully consider his attitude toward us (Americans, not just white Americans). Let me add however a phrase he does use to describe his attitude toward whites. He harbors a "COIL OF RAGE". His words, not mine. Don’t take this out of context. Read the entire books yourself before you reach any conclusions. Below are a few quotes to whet your interest.

-------------------------------/

From Dreams From My Father:

"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."

From Dreams From My Father :

"I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race."

From Dreams From My Father:

"There was something about her that made me wary, a little too sure of herself, maybe and white."

From Dreams From My Father:

"It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names."

From Dreams From My Father:

"I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself: the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela."

And FINALLY ........... and most scary:

From Audacity of Hope:

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

If you agree that attention to the President’s own words is an important step in vetting him as he seeks reelection, then read his words and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

I don't care whether you are a Democrat, a Republican, a Conservative or a Liberal, black, white, yellow or otherwise, make yourself aware of the attitudes and character of this sitting President, who promised to bring us all together.

Spread the word!
