Am I the only one who didn't like Thessia?

The whole thing was dull and the climax was tired and predictable. I spent my time looking at the Asari artifacts going "Wait, what the hell? Those are Protheans.", followed shortly by "Am I the only one seeing Protheans here?", completed not long thereafter with "Liara, you are a loving Prothean specialist, how are you not seeing this?"

Then, along comes the predictable lieutenant boss battle with a guy I could beat with my eyes closed. Then, like loving clockwork, he steals the artifact from right in front of you, because that wasn't a predictable twist at all.

And then, you're left wondering "Wait a tic, so the Asari have been reading a beacon left by the Protheans - which contains a warning to all who read it about the Reapers - and they STILL loving IGNORE SHEPARD'S WARNING!?"

Finally, after the Reapers come, the Asari bitch and moan "Oh woe is us, thousands of years of culture gone".

Well, that's what you get, bitches. I'm sorry, are you feeling sad that I didn't manage to save you from the Reapers YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WERE COMING and ignored me about, even after I saved you from them loving twice?

My loving goodness, if the endings were the black pit where choice in this game goes to die, then Thessia is the nadir of storytelling.

Liara could see it, she just didn't want to believe it. It's a drastic shift in how she has to view her own peoples culture and history. I can't really blame her for not wanting to admit it is true.

As for the beacon...I may have to go over the scene again to see if this is addressed, but isn't it the case that people just couldn't understand the beacon? I mean, Shepard finds the beacon on Eden Prime and can barely understand it. The beacons were really made for protheans to be able to understand and nobody in the modern universe in ME seems to have a good way to translate it, it's even more likely that Asari in the past would be unable to understand the beacon.

Haledjian posted:

I usually leave her on the ship anyway because Liara as a combatant doesn't make a lot of sense to me. It gets handwaved in the first game with "sometimes there are pirate raids, I can handle myself" as if that qualifies her to be in a squad full of ex-special forces operatives.

I see your point, however, does it really make more sense for say, Mordin to be a combatant, than Liara? I'm not saying I agree with Liara understanding advanced squad tactics and poo poo, but her being able to hold her own is pretty reasonable - Asari are already powerful biotics, and I'm pretty sure in ME1 she says she got some training from Benezia when she was younger, and then on top of that she did have to know enough to survive out on her own.

Again, not saying it makes her the best fighter in the galaxy, but it does explain why she can hold her own and not just be a damsel in distress.

One thing I hoped the game would reveal that Shepard was some kind of long genetic project of the Protheans, which is why she could read the beacons. Saren would have been something similar for the Turian. It really showed that the Protheans were playing a long game of survival, trying to make the next cycle the last.

For DLC, I am totally expecting one DLC to have to do with Omega. Retaking it for Aria would get some nice war assets I think. I also hope there could be some Krogan related DLC. Some kind of hard core combat mission with Wrex.

Mordin is/was STG and explicitly trained in combat and special operations. The scars on his face and the missing ... uh, head thingy, came from his time with them.

In fact, that scarring happened when he killed a Krogan scout with a pitchfork in close quarters combat, as outlined in his SB dossier.

Edit: As an aside, those Krogan scouts/workers managed to kill 2 STG regulars, while seriously injuring 2 other STG regulars and one specialist during that OP.

Unless there were scores of human beings with the appropriate genes running around - in which case Shepard wouldn't be all that special anyway -, I don't really see how the Protheans could accomplish such a thing, or even why they would bother creating a single genetic line that never produced more than one viable child per generation; even if that were possible, the risks of failure would surely greatly outweigh the benefits. Spreading those genes would be a far better and more economical strategy.

I went Insanity Infiltrator to start with, and while there are certainly particular sections which are really difficult, it's worth it. Basically any kind of enclosed arena where you start surrounded is going to massively gently caress you over, likewise with irregular cover points.

I tend to save my cloak for "they threw a bomb at me, time to relocate" (which doesn't always work, because at Insanity it can only take one stray shot from enemies who know where you were to kill you non-shielded, but eh). Banshees are no problem. Phantoms, on the other hand, are arseholes.

Having said all that, I just picked up my Black Widow. Glee.

Shepard is an incredibly special case when it comes to understanding Prothean poo poo, yes. He's got the Eden Prime data-dump in his head, as well as all the stuff the Thorian gives you, whatever they called it. It's a completely unique set of knowledge that only, like, Jarvik could replicate -- Shepard basically has the brain patterns of the Prothean species imprinted on him from two utterly unique sources.

They reinforce it in From Ashes. You find basically Prothean videotapes showing exactly what happened and how to unseal the stasis pod, and when Shepard wonders how the gently caress Cerberus couldn't figure it out with the instructions right there, Liara goes "wait, you understood that?" All anyone else could see was static and gibberish, but it's clear as a bell to Shepard.

Doing my first playthrough on Insanity as an imported Soldier. It was tough going in the beginning because I just didn't have enough damage, but the middle part of the game was very manageable with good teammates.

I also didn't really cover my weak spots early game because I kept taking James to hear his jocky bravado over other, more useful teammates. Just two soldiers running around using up all their ammo.

Just goes to prove my point that pulling off some extraordinary scheme so that 50,000 years from now there'll be a handful of genetically unique snowflakes scattered throughout the galaxy, for sole the purpose of fighting the Reapers in the next cycle, is really stretching things.

He does say something which gives you a clue, iirc. He says something about how "we thought you would be our successors" which to me indicated it was during those last 200 years when they realized they were probably not going to make it. But I could have misunderstood.

Eh, ME1 has a few brilliant pieces, but I think there's a little too much bassy, atmospheric music and not quite enough brighter-sounding, melodious music. Maybe I'd also like it better if it had proper '80s-style production. More like this (ignore the video) or this or this (sans all the samples).

It's a real stretch to suggest that genetic development left unattended for 50 millennia could offer any guarantees. More importantly, if their control of DNA was actually that refined, surely it would have been no trouble to directly introduce the genetic modifications necessary to use Prothean devices? They could've grabbed a bunch of humans, enabled them to do what's necessary, then put them back and let nature run its course as they'd multiply until there's millions (even billions) of humans who could use them. Maybe I'm missing something, but I honestly see no benefit whatsoever for either the Protheans or humans to resorting to some dreadful copy of Dune's entire Kwisatz Haderach angle.

That's okay, just trying to be constructive! Maybe it helps if you paste a metallic texture across the logo like with the background? Also, considering that the ME3 CE box has a big N7 logo smack in the middle, too, it makes sense that your first instinct would be to do the same; and even if you actually haven't seen that cover, it would be a pretty obvious thing to try out first.
