Lame. I already bought the single disc version because I didn't want to shell out the extra money. This is only a dollar more than I paid. I did get it before everyone else, so I guess there's that.

Not only that, but Beatles releases of any sort are always a clusterfuck of legal red tape. And they're also very heavily advertised and create lots of buzz months before hand. I've heard no mention of this anywhere and if it was happening in May they would have been hyping it for months now. I'll only believe it when I'm holding the blu-ray in my hands. Here's to hoping that if it does happen, they don't gently caress it up and give the soundtrack a godawful remix.

Amazon Goldbox deal right now is The Sound of Music 45th Anniversary boxed set for a ridiculous $25. I just got this less than a week ago for someone's birthday at the normal $60, so this stings a bit even though the timing simply wouldn't have worked. But it's a pretty sweet set. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I know the video and audio quality are both supposed to be phenomenal.

Well hot drat, it's official!!!

Once upon a time…or maybe twice…there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland…

London – March 20, 2012 – The Beatles’ classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, has been digitally restored for DVD and Blu-ray release on May 28 (May 29 in North America). The film's songtrack album will be reissued on CD on the same date.

Currently out of print, the film has been restored in 4K digital resolution for the first time by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film’s restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame.

Bonus features for the Yellow Submarine DVD and Blu-ray include a short making-of documentary titled “Mod Odyssey” (TRT: 7:30), the film’s original theatrical trailer, audio commentary by producer John Coates and art director Heinz Edelmann, several brief interview clips with others involved with the film, storyboard sequences, 29 original pencil drawings and 30 behind-the-scenes photos. Both Digipak packages will include reproductions of animation cels from the film, collectible stickers, and a 16-page booklet with a new essay by Yellow Submarine aficionado John Lasseter (Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios).

The packaging on the [US remake] Girl With The Dragon Tatoo blu -ray is complete poo poo. I don't mind the soft cover format but it's day one for the Canadian release and at the 3 major retailers I've been to every copy had the edges frayed, beat to poo poo or already visably tearing and wearing down while they look like overstacking has started to bend the main body of the cases.

Threw me for a second also. I opened it to look at the discs and underneath the special features disc I see a what looks like a bootleg disc. Upon further inspection, I noticed that it said DVD on it. That's what I call marketing.

It was remixed for 5.1 for the 1998 re-release by Apple Corps, using the multitrack masters for songs and George Martin's score, plus the isolated dialogue and effects tracks. AHDN was just the restored mono mix pushed through faux stereo filters. Not sure why it even needs a 5.1 track since it's inappropriate to the feel of the film.

I know, I'm really hoping they'd have the mono mix included for Yellow Submarine. They're really just reusing the audio from the 1999 release? I would have figured they'd have an all new remaster. Especially considering all the original material they've unearthed in the last few years.

The 5.1 remix was state-of-the-art at the time, down to being edited digitally. They shouldn't have to re-do anything. The tech specs indicate the original mono mix is included and the remix is DTS 5.1. Although, I'm surprised it's not DTS-HDMA or PCM 5.1 unless the specs are incomplete.

I think there's some Oppo models that can playback mkv. I'm not positive though. But honestly you'd probably just want to get a PS3 and use something like PS3 Media Server program to stream them as it would be a cheaper solution. Either way, you should probably check the AV Arena forum for more feedback on that kind of thing.

A cheap blu-ray player and something like WD TV Live/O!Play would probably be your best bet. $150 for two devices is still half the price almost half the price of a PS3 and you don't have to worry about transcoding (or being stuck with an outdated game console in the future)

- edit I didn't know they dropped the price down to $250
