Monitor Care and Feeding - Cleaning

Stop. Put away your Windex or other household cleaner. Pull up the documentation for your monitor. See what the manufacturer recommends. Use what they recommend. Pure isopropyl/rubbing alcohol will quickly destroy any AG or other coating on the screen. Windex is usually almost always fatal to CRT screens and some LCD AG coatings. A diluted mix of isopropyl alcohol and water is recommended by Dell and Apple. (50/50 I think)

Microfiber clothes (like those for lenses) work fine, but I actually prefer plain paper towels (not shop towels, not towels with any special poo poo in them, but pure, plain paper towel). It's what I use to clean projection CRT optics that are waaay more sensitive. Don't use them dry though - use the appropriate liquid cleaner and then be liberal in your usage of cloths. You're here to clean your monitor, not to conserve cleaning cloths. Never double-back (or you'll just wipe grime over what you just cleaned), don't clean in concentric circles either (more applicable to CRT optics).

Don't forget to dust the back of your monitor as well, especially near any ventilation grates. Dusty electronics are bad!

The whole diluted alcohol thing never made any sense to me. If alcohol is gonna gently caress up some kind of coating, then diluted alcohol is just gonna gently caress it up a little less, but still gently caress it up to some extent. I'm inclined to believe it's a bunch of FUD, but whatever. I just spit shine my monitors anyways.

Yeah man, ghetto screen cleaners unite! gently caress these sophisticated methods, and head back to the basics if you want a clean rear end monitor.

Can a kind soul with a Catleap Q270 (or similar) post their EDID? Mine seems to be corrupt, which means my computer won't push anything higher than 640x480 to it.

(From http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/7947-force-dvi-hdmi-resolutions-refresh-rates.html): The procedure is as simple as
1. Download Phoenix and run it: http://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/9016d1240813004-force-dvi-hdmi-resolutions-refresh-rates-phoenix.zip

2. Click Extract Registry EDID, select the Q270.

3. Click the button to the left (to the right of the pen) and screenshot the window that pops up.

Thanks.

Distilled water and a cotton towel. That's it. Any streaks left over that you don't pick up with the water can be "buffed" out with the cotton towel, whether it's a 3H coating, glossy, or in between.

Tap water probably works just as well, though.

All things considered though, I would consider this awesome shipping speed. After dealing with Dealextreme and 3 months shipping times, I am quite impressed. Which one is the Catleap?

EDIT: Also for anyone ordering the Catleap monitor be aware, some are glossy and some aren't. Someone on hardforums asked one of the sellers about it and was told that there is about a 2% chance you get a Catleap that isn't glossy like mine and Animal's. I just sent dcsamsungmall a message asking if I can get a replacement that is glossy because that's what I thought I was getting and what I really wanted.

Intriguing... mine is identical (and, if you decode it, basically nonsense). Looks like this is a case of Windows being smart and Linux being stupid.

In case anyone has the same problem, I've worked around it by hacking up an EDID from the 27" Apple Cinema Display and using
code:
Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-0:/etc/X11/CATLEAP.Q270.edid.bin"
in my xorg.conf. Quite a beautiful monitor now that it works.

There will be a lot of people willing to buy yours off. A lot of people like me prefer matte. On Ars Technica some people were saying they havent bought one because they cant get a guaranteed matte. So sell it to them.

I don't think you'll get a loss. A lot of people *REALLY* prefer matte, and might even be willing to pay a premium for one instead of risking the bullshit blasphemy bling fad that is a glossy display :)

It's usually the opposite and people tend to make threads complaining about the 3H coating used on LG IPS panels frequently on different message boards.

Extremely aggressive coatings like this reduce light transmission by ~12% or so and do not need to be as aggressive as they are. Samsung's PLS displays or BenQ's A-MVA (ew2420/2430) displays have what I'd consider a good, non-grainy/non-aggressive matte coating whereas LG still can't seem to figure out how to do this after years and years of trying.

For once it's nice to look at an image on my display that doesn't look like it has ISO noise all over it. It's clear, and whites are finally white, as they should be.

Wow. I just checked fedex and the Catleap I ordered on Tuesday at around 8pm CST is on the local truck for delivery today. Three days from Korea blows my freaking mind. I can't wait to get the thing home. Now I just have to buy a new video card to run it. Uggg. $370 for a monitor is a lot less cheap of an upgrade when you have to figure in a new $500 video card to run it. Too bad the 680's sold out yesterday.

I don't think it's a good idea to assume the AG coating is any different than what you'd find on the U2711 seeing as the panels are coming from the same place until someone can actually compare them side by side with another LG IPS panel. I've never seen or heard of an LG IPS panel with anything in between a glossy or aggressive 3H coating.

The Catleaps use the exact same panel as the HPs, Dells, and Apple Cinema displays. They don't have OSDs, they don't have a variety of connection (unless you pay $100 or so more), and they're used in PC Cafes in Korea. They're exclusively for the Korean market so the only way you could get one is through eBay or through a friend who's willing to ship it to you. Eitherway, it'd cost you price of the monitor (at least 200) +$100 shipping

They cost $225 for the cheapest versions unless you buy in bulk, and shipping is $100+ unless you drop ship which is like $75 /ea unless you're shipping a gently caress ton. They only make like $30-50 profit on each one, but then pay ebay and paypal fees, you're not going to get them cheaper elsewhere.

You get effectively no warranty, as shipping it back to korea isn't worth the cost, and unlike Dell, they wont swap it if you get backlight/dead pixels unless its really bad. The plus side is that the risks appear to be relatively low for something that's 50% off of the closest competitor.

Well, I got my Catleap set up. Works great. No buzz. Transformer stays cool (mine says 110v-220v on it). The stand is cheap but mine is straight. I think that the problem that people might be having with crooked stands may be because they are tightening one side down all the way before tightening the other side. You need to tighten them down together for it to stay straight I think. Anyway, I guess I got lucky. No dead pixels. No rattle in the transformer. I have a little backlight bleed but that is to be expected. No big deal. I don't plan on watching dvds on the thing anyway.

As far as the stand... It doesn't tilt forward at all and it is too high for my taste. Other than that, it isn't that bad. All in all, I'd say I was very impressed with dcsamsungmall's awesome ebay service. Ordered at 8pm Tuesday night. Got here (Chicago) at Noon on Friday. Pure awesome.

I have an Egrotron MX vesa mount that was used on ebay for $80 on the way. I might return it. The stand isn't that bad. Anyway, if anyone has any questions about the monitor, feel free to ask. I'd post some pics, but there seem to be plenty of those out there already.

How does a Dell U2410 compare to these Catleap monitors? I use 2 of them at work and since we are moving buildings and our new building isn't done yet my team is working from home for the next two months so I've got them here at the house with me. Currently hooked up to my 13" MBA via TB->HDMI connector.

Everything looks really great on this and in 2 months when I go back to work I'll have to give it up and was considering picking up one of the Catleaps. Are they similar in quality?

The biggest difference you would probably see right away is the AG coating on Dell monitors is much more aggressive than most anything else, especially since these monitors seem to be nearly all glossy screens. How much that bothers (or doesn't bother) you depends on how your lighting at home is set up. The imac comparison is probably the easiest thing you could do to check out the difference in person, since those are really the only way to see a glossy 27" IPS panel in a retail setting. You're never going to find something like a dell 2711 in a retail store to look at, but imacs are everywhere.

I love this monitor but the 2 things that I dislike about it are:
1) No HMDI input

The screen is very matte (if you like that) and for the most part you cannot see the the matte finish interfere with the picture.

Take the old part out and find the make and model and buy the exact same one if you are worried about compatibility. Might be possible to find a dead laptop of the same model on eBay... then you get lots of spare parts.
