Well, you can have apprehensions, but it is always worth a try, even when it is you that has to turn down the job. Developer QA tends to give you better results than that of large publisher mills... if you get in here you will at least have a better chance, even if it's for 6 months. Just give me a message, I'll pass on the deets and we can go from there!

Was approached for a position in NY, any idea which studio it might be? "Hope all is well. I wanted to run a new role passed you that I have had come in based in New York. It is working for a well known developer who have recently opened a new studio in this area. Please take a read through the spec and confirm if you are happy to be submitted across. Here follows the details of a job for which you appear to be a suitable candidate: UI Artist Required For American Developer. Job ID : 15318 Description: With numerous hit titles and established brands as well as new IPs to their portfolio, this company can offer you the chance to get involved in the production of an highly anticipated predicted chart-topper, as well as an excellent working environment." Would it be NYC too? Don't know if I could be bothered moving if it wasn't. Also salary expectations for American UI designer? I've only worked in OZ and UK. Not sure what game it is either.

They're definately legit, the same company (but not the person who contacted me) got me a role in UK a few years ago. If it's rockstar that would be worth a move, I've been part of three studios that all shut down while I was there or soon after. Actually doing UI for a mobile app developer now.

I could be wrong, but it looks like the actual job description is fine and the part proceeding it (which is... less fine) is coming from another source, like a job hunting service or something. I wouldn't hold the company the job posting is for responsible for that.

I've used recruiters before and they've either been fantastic or really terrible. I used one to land my latest job and they were top notch. It was Game Recruiter, if you're looking for work, try using them. They were incredibly responsive, understanding to my needs and...just all around great. http://bit.ly/GItCcS should give you some insight in to whatever company is using. Firts off, congrats on getting the job. San Francisco is a big city, so if you are going there, be prepared for a lot of traffic inside the city. SF is rarely non busy when driving. As for Marin, it's more of small city across the Golden Gate bridge. So I say, do you want to live in city that is very noisy, has multiple things happening. or live in a quite city like Marin. It's basically either live in a big rear end city or live in a small one. SF is my hometown, I love it but even I would prefer a small city moreso than a big one.

I believe there are a couple of options, for living out away from the city. Some of them are serviced by a "good" ferry, that's fast and convenient and has wifi and such. The other ferry, that I believe goes to Marin, is slow and crappy. I have no experience whatsoever of my own there, but unless I'm misremembering the location, I gather that the bridge is super expensive to drive across, and that BART doesn't come out there at all. Commutes from out there were thus hell, as compared to anywhere where you could commute in via wifi'ed ferry/bus/etc. Shalinor fucked around with this message at 21:23 on Mar 23, 2012 |

You would HATE your life if you had that commute. It's at least a reverse one, but UGHHHH. It's a 30 mile commute already and that's before the shitshow of traffic on the GG in the morning. I very briefly flirted with the idea of living in, say, Sausalito and working in the city, but that commute was just a killer.

To be fair, it's in Nowhere, Minnesota, where $12/hour is probably akin to $20/hour in a coastal city. Edit: vvv Sorry - when I google maps'd it, I had to zoom out 3 times before I saw Bloomington / Minneapolis but I didn't look at the little mile marker, so I assumed it was out in the sticks. devilmouse fucked around with this message at 02:18 on Mar 24, 2012 |

minneapolis isn't THAT cheap, and it's like a second ring suburb, not that far out there. I live in the center of the city and it's like a 20 minute commute. Also I will fight you for hating on minneapolis.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows how I could get a leg-up on finding an Entry/Mid-level UI Programming gig. right now I got a checklist of stuff I should know: Flash/Scaleform (via the Unreal Development Kit) Perl/Lua/Python some Web Development skills ala CSS/PHP and C/C++ for good measure I keep applying to stuff all over, but so far in my almost 2 year search I have had one phone interview very early on that I fell flat on my face in, one phone screen that lead to a programming test but no-dice, and one eternal e-mail conversation / multiple programming tests / write-up on object-oriented programming that nobody has responded to me in months so I guess I will give up on him despite him telling me not to. at least I got a guy who is letting me do a little freelance work for him right now.

How many applications are you putting out versus how many hits are you getting? What's your portfolio/experience look like? Why is C/C++ at the tail end of UI programming? Here at Volition at least, UI programming is C++. The in-game setup of stuff/scripting is LUA, but the UI artists do that. From my limited exposure it kind of sounds like you're aiming for an in-between position that doesn't really exist. What's your portfolio look like nowadays? I thought you had some flash games and stuff in there, but I might be thinking of someone else? With that skill list you might want to take a look at Kixeye? They've got about 100 positions they want to fill and given your focus on web-distributable stuff it'd be up your alley, skills-wise. http://www.kixeye.com/jobs/

Sigma-X posted:Here at Volition at least, UI programming is C++. The in-game setup of stuff/scripting is LUA, but the UI artists do that. Yeah, sadly Scaleform isn't quite like that. It's some half-assed mix of UI design, UI art and UI programming with very blurred lines between each field. Odds are if you're a UI programmer working with Scaleform, you'll inevitably have to open a flash file to make some changes to the ActionScript there. If you're lucky, depending on how Scaleform was integrated to your engine, you might have one big common ActionScript file containing all the relevant UI logic for that movie clip. But, more likely, odds are the goddamn logic will be all over the place, in animation frames, in includes, in script, in C++. It's a loving oversized nightmare and requires specialists in their own rights.

Does anyone know if it's possible to find game cinematics/trailers with sound effects/dialogue but no music? I've been wanting to do some music reels and practice and I'm more into the music domain than sound effects although that is something that I'll also be concentrating on. Thanks

Unless having no music is the conceit of the trailer (and I'm unfamiliar of any that do this) you're not going to find partial trailers like that in public, so you'll either want to hunt down leaks or look into removing the music. I was under the impression that a lot of karaoke players tend to remove the lyrics from stereo mixes programmatically (since the vocals are centered and the instruments are not) and if that is the case, surely there's a way to it the other way, right? Go hunting and try to find some trailers with the mono music and stereo sounds, or vice versa? I know nothing about audio.
