A commercial jet breaking the sound barrier is pretty much impossible (unless we're talking about the Concorde or Tu-144), but if we posit that it was instead a supersonic bomber of some sort (Backfire, Blackjack, whatever), a supersonic jet could in theory cause problems if it "buzzed" (or whatever) a subsonic jet due to wake turbulence/vortex/other supersonic flow things (especially since the subsonic jet would be considerably smaller than the supersonic jet) but that would be incredibly unlikely to ever happen since any escort is going to take place at subsonic speeds, and it's not like a jet can just accelerate to supersonic speeds like a sports car, doubly so if it's a large bomber. The military must be in a long habit of stationing officers in Vegas for training in the deserts around it. My grandfather served from 43 through the early 70's He was involved in one of the early tests that included combat infantry formations getting nuked. I wish i knew the test series name, but i dont. He said they layed down in trenches not very far away from ground zero and covered their faces with their hands. When the bomb went off, he saw his bones of his hands like an X-ray, before his eyes. He also said that when they werent getting nuked they were staying in one of the taller hotels in vegas at that time, and could see the mushrooms from the bar at the top. He's gone now, so i cant easily know what units he was in at what times. I wouldnt be surprised if the govenment keeps that data and its available, but ive never looked. I think this is probably because the vast majority of Nevada is owned by the government. Everything not colored is privately owned. Also, I had no idea how huge the Nellis Range is until I saw this.
