This question is not intended to be taken absolutely seriously, however a logical answer would be nice.

Are you talking about the commercial jet? A commercial jet breaking the sound barrier is pretty much impossible (unless we're talking about the Concorde or Tu-144), but if we posit that it was instead a supersonic bomber of some sort (Backfire, Blackjack, whatever), a supersonic jet could in theory cause problems if it "buzzed" (or whatever) a subsonic jet due to wake turbulence/vortex/other supersonic flow things (especially since the subsonic jet would be considerably smaller than the supersonic jet) but that would be incredibly unlikely to ever happen since any escort is going to take place at subsonic speeds, and it's not like a jet can just accelerate to supersonic speeds like a sports car, doubly so if it's a large bomber.

Maybe? don't know much about USAF WIC. It's a 7ish week course after which Marines become designated take a 2 year ADSO and gain an MOS identifier as WTI grads and must be assigned to WTI billets. Generics was easy, and just a lot of powerpoint with all 200 students in one area. Commons breaks down into much smaller cells for 2 weeks and miserable tests and lots of memorization. Now we're going into specifics where it's just piles and piles of planning and execution all day everyday with 90-some aircraft until graduation.

Okay, then yeah, it sounds kind of like the equivalent of WIC/Weapons School although WIC is quite a bit longer than 7 weeks. If you ever come across a patch wearer, try to take their patch and/or coin away from them. I guarantee hilarity will ensue.

Well, the USMC is clearly the world's premier air combat organization, what with their '80s era legacy C/D model Bugs and high performing Harriers (not to mention their overwhelming organic C2 and ISR capabilities, as well as all that long endurance organic aerial refueling they possess with their KC-130s), so of course this is the case.

To be fair, they don't claim it's a premier aviation planning school because of impressive technical or weapons capabilities; they are quite aware that their equipment and the amount of battlespace they can manage/cover is very limited. They will just claim the training quality itself is the best of the best of the best, etc.

Also, I keep hearing the terms MAGTF, single battle concept, and "lock the enemy in the horns of a dilemma" a lot.

Holy poo poo, like the story says those "requirements" were a joke shat out by the DND up there about a month before the decision to buy the F-35 was made back in 2010, and as such were tailor made so the F-35 would be the only aircraft that could fill them.

So the F-35 is such a clusterfuck of a program it can't even meet a requirement that was TAILOR MADE for it less than two years ago. The fact that it was the "game changing" DAS that caused this is just the icing on the cake.

The military must be in a long habit of stationing officers in Vegas for training in the deserts around it. My grandfather served from 43 through the early 70's He was involved in one of the early tests that included combat infantry formations getting nuked. I wish i knew the test series name, but i dont.
He said they layed down in trenches not very far away from ground zero and covered their faces with their hands.
When the bomb went off, he saw his bones of his hands like an X-ray, before his eyes.
He also said that when they werent getting nuked they were staying in one of the taller hotels in vegas at that time, and could see the mushrooms from the bar at the top.

He's gone now, so i cant easily know what units he was in at what times.
I wouldnt be surprised if the govenment keeps that data and its available, but ive never looked.
I did find this cool site with a lot of bomb test series information, more than ive seen compiled elsewhere.

"The document says the plane must be capable of providing the pilot with 360-degree, out-of-cockpit visual situational awareness in a no-light environment."

What plane *can* do that?

Holy poo poo:

quote:

The F-35 procurement, the costliest military purchase in Canadian history, is the source of ongoing controversy and is the subject of an auditor general's report that is being released next week. The government estimates the entire purchase and associated costs will be between $14 billion and $16 billion.

So *that's* why their military has things like a "rapid response" disaster relief team that needs to charter commercial air to get anywhere and doesn't actually even leave Canadian airspace for two weeks after the disaster it's supposed to be rapidly responding to.

I wasn't aware of that aspect of the plane, and I'm not surprised to see it's about as hosed up as everything else.

But if they craft a requirement with the expectation that *only* the F-35 will be able to fulfill it, and then it turns out that the F-35 can't do that, then it seems to be a choice between F-35s and no planes at all.

The F-35's DAS was (and still is) advertised as being able to do just that. Unfortunately it's had some issues:

quote:

We knew that the helmet-mounted display was in trouble. A simpler alternate HMD was ordered from BAE Systems in September, but it does not meet the requirement for "through the airplane" zero-light visibility provided by the electro-optical distributed aperture system. (Yes, that EO-DAS, that makes maneuvering irrelevant.)

Today, the killer problem with EO-DAS is latency: the image in the helmet lags 130 milliseconds behind sightline movement where the spec is under 40 ms. (So the video is where the pilot's head was pointed an eighth of a second ago.) That can't be fixed without changing the JSF's integrated core processor - the jet's central brain - and the EO-DAS sensors. Even the backup helmet faces buffet and latency issues, simply for symbology.

I've linked to it before, but if you are at all interested in the JSF you really need to read the Quick Look Review report if you haven't.
