One user was convinced that this mod had it out for her and her grandchild on the site and was the head of some internet conspiracy against her. I should say that we all knew GD was (and probably still is) a cesspool, it just refuses to drain. People have been saying that the mods should clean it up for years, except when a whole team of them spent several months cracking down on the report queue for that forum (which was like over 50,000) and brought it down to zero, it was back up to 50,000 again within a week. Oh, but I've had people threaten to call the police on me and saying the owner of the internet should shut down my account.

I joined Gaia late 2003 and apparently my last log-in was 2009. If I sold all my items for real money I think I could net a couple thousand. I mostly stayed away from all the crazy, I think... Though to be fair the few subforums I were on had crazy drama, so maybe not.

It's SO bad, in fact, that it's the only forum you can't see on the forums page unless you're logged in, because Gaia doesn't want to risk any parents seeing it. People have been begging Gaia to get rid of it, but they're afraid that if they delete it, the forum will "spill" and the GDers will invade other forums and post their horrible poo poo there. They can always try what GameFAQs did with LUE. For those of you unfamiliar with that particular drama, LUE (Life, the Universe, and Everything) was a GameFAQs board. Their forums are almost all bad, but LUE was the worst. It was a 'general' forum, but you needed to have a certain amount of posts and your account had to be a certain age to post there. The idea was that this would promote better discussion, and it had a more 'relaxed' moderation system. This worked about as well as you'd expect. So the mods desperately wanted to kill LUE, but they didn't want the posters going to other forums. They tried a variety of techniques. First, they removed all links to LUE from the board navigation pages, so you could only access it by typing the URL. That didn't work. Then, they decided to close LUE to new users altogether. Anyone who registered after certain date couldn't join LUE. That worked okay, but LUE was still a cesspool. Finally, they decided to only allow people who 'signed up' for LUE within a two-week window access it. If you didn't sign up in those two weeks, you could never access LUE. That finally 'killed' the board, although it is still active and even ten years later people are still posting there, although most of them moved to an offsite board.

There's this one GD troll who has 280 accounts that we know of. They brag about how many times they've been banned, too. They wouldn't leave Gaia if the GD was locked, they'd just move (and ruin) someplace else. Messing with them just pisses them off and causes more trouble than it's worth, so they let the forum just sit there. None of the mods want to deal with it because they keep getting death threats when they give people warnings. Reminds me of the LF shutdown Then again, when they closed that forum they also banned the worst offenders, namely those who had actively called for the assassination of the president of the United States

Hey, I've got a new story! So sorry it's taken so long, it's the end of the semester for me so I'm absolutely swamped with projects and papers! Anyways, here we go! Drop the Bass In previous stories, I've listed some of the different “talents” Alan fancied himself to have (i.e. Magical wizardry, kung-fu, demon sonar, psychic seduction, kissing). Today I tell you about Alan's musical pursuits and the proceeding insanity. Unfortunately, there was a guitar in the Pagan Club. It wasn't unfortunate most of the time, just when Alan was around to use it. During some of our phone conversations he told me that he liked to sing and play guitar and would maybe like to sing to me someday. I thought this was very sweet at the time so I told him “Yeah, that would be nice, sometime”. Fast-forward to the next time I was with him in the club-space. I started hearing this noise, like a nasally hum coming from somewhere. I thought it was a problem in the walls or something (the club was situated right over a very unstable septic pipe that sometimes made noise and released horrible smells). Nope, it was Alan. He was humming, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” right into my ear. I'm not a musical genius or anything, but I know when something's off-key. This was very off-key. I thought tone deafness was just a myth but here it was right in front of me. He also had no idea what the words were because in between humming he would insert clever little lyrics like “love of mine, someday you'll be mine” and go right back to humming the rest. Apparently he thought this was romantic. I thought it was creepy and stalkerish. I made an excuse to leave. To the rest of the club, Alan would describe how successful an artist he was while finding excuses to not have to perform. According to him, his father had a recording studio in his basement and he used it regularly (Actually, this was a huge lie, his father sold coat hangers). When I told him I played bass guitar and that we should play together sometime, he changed the subject quickly. One night, as per usual, I was at home talking to Alan on the phone. He was walking home from the bus stop and I was at home playing bass guitar. Whatever inanities we were talking about continued until he started freaking out suddenly. : : WAIT. STOP......... : What? What's wrong? : DROP THE BASS : What? : DROP THE BASS RIGHT NOW. RIGHT. NOW. : Why? : Just do it! Now now now! I didn't do it...I just told him that I did : Okay, okay! It's on the floor. Will you tell me what's going on? : It's just that (he takes a deep, dramatically misunderstood breath here) I just had a vision. : A vision of what? : Your bass. One of the strings snapped and it hit you right in the eye. : But-- : I was just protecting you! Sorry if you think that's silly : Okay, well...thanks? : You're welcome, anyways I'm home, I'll call you later. : Yes. Here's the thing...bass strings do not snap unless you cut them. Guitar strings snap because they're wound too tight or they're strummed too hard etc. Generally, bass strings are under such low tension that the only way to snap them (because they're thick rear end cables) is to cut them yourself, then they flop (not snap up into your face) like a sad fish. This is when I started really feeling just how stupid this relationship was. I took Alan less and less seriously every time he hit me with one of these moments. It's strange that this is the thing that caused me to feel this way and not any of his other antics. I guess it was because this was one thing I could honestly say he was wrong about. All the things about demons and past-lives I could assume he knew about because he was the President of the Pagan Club. This was just something that I couldn't possibly delude myself to let go of. Here's an accompanying comic to the story. Sorry it's a bit erratic. I've never made a comic before I'm trying out new techniques and styles (not very well). Bear with me, I'll probably just stick to the old stuff. Enjoy! Note: My paper was too big for the scanner so I had to cut the comic in half.
