Looks like it may have been an anchoring chain, so maybe a combo of long-term stress, salt and rough water? You can see the rig starts to bob after the chain snaps.

Also, that I4 with no intake valves is pretty ridiculous.

I noticed that as well. You can see the lights from whatever is in the distance rise very sharply then SNAP.

Is this what happens when the timing chain on an "interference" engine goes out? Or what else could possibly cause this?

Yes; apparently they're called "shots" and there is 15 fathoms of chain between each one.

They probably put the wrong steel in the wrong place. Together some make hydrogen gas IIRC. Don't know the details, but it makes for big fireworks.

I did that in my E46 3 series, and luckily only bent some valves. Was still a costly repair.

The ol' money shift. I floored it out of a toll booth in the middle of the night one time...went from 2->1 at redline in the subaru with an 8 year old 80,000 mile timing belt. Boy did I feel lucky that I drove home fine.

Yup, and being only 2 years into the loan of the car, I had to fix it. Shop knocked off a few bucks and the bill was still 4100. Replaced every valve in the head and associated hardware of everything in between.

In 1990-91 I had an '86 Chevette with about 60k, pulled out of a rest-stop on the interstate and had the thing floored and was frustrated that for some reason I couldn't get past about 65 or so. Took me awhile to realize I hadn't shifted to 4th(:420:), and thus had been well over the redline for at least 30 seconds.

No damage, amazingly enough.

Negative. Not sure if that was even a color option on the E46 models. Mines Titanium Silver, did this in Tampa about 3 years ago.

Edit: Oops, thought I was replying in the BMW thread. I think some pages ago I had posted pictures of my bent valves.

The chain was locked in the shark jaw, and the people on the bridge forgot to adjust the tension on the chain puller.
The chain can handle 620T, and it snapped around 700T.

Also, that's not an oil rig, thats the AHTS vessel "Skandi Vega".

what's that you say? Upper control arms are supposed to be one piece?

That would explain the odd BANG noise I heard when I dropped the clutch downshifting 3rd-2nd in 4WD low range while out wheeling on Sunday.

It got a bit warped a while ago, I usually carry spares and I towed it to the trail that time so I didn't really think much of it... fortunately it finally popped at the end of the run anyways. So I towed it home and threw a decent aftermarket UCA on it.

What's wrong with that? You don't always have to have tenders for shorter springs.

My E30 with HR Race has about that much gap in the front at full droop.
