I know I keep running into this argument as well.. I know Hussie has said that Vriska and Mindfang were genetically identical, in one of his posts talking about her, citing it as a reasonable assumption that Mindfang shows what Vriska would be like if she had grown up in the terrible pirate days. Maybe it was during a post talking about the early Mindfang journal updates.

I just can't for the life of me find the post in question.

I think you were thinking of this, which doesn't actually say they're genetically identical:

Andrew's old Formspring posted:

How much of the journal was real and how much was MM's self-insert fiction?

All of it was an accurate historical account of events from her perspective. She does not need to embellish on anything because she is the real deal. A very successful and nefarious troll pirate who exploits her powers in battle and romance.

This is one of those things that is equal parts serious and silly (well ok maybe not totally equal). It is in part serious in the sense that you can view it totally straight and read it as a series of events that literally happened, and has implications for the story. It is also in part COMPLETELY loving RIDICULOUS because you are truly, literally reading an excerpt of trashy romance, involving pirates like some Fabio novel, all parsed through a grim troll culture and the strange multi-dimensionality of troll romance.

Once all the dust WTF settles, you can look at it from a variety of angles.

Since this is the ancestor Vriska idolizes, this is probably the exact type of character she'd grow up to be, if left unfettered in troll society. If there is any departure in her inclinations, this is the template she is departing from. We've already seen her try to do her Mindfang impression a few times with mixed results. She tried to get Tavros to kiss her with mind control, but couldn't go through with it.

When put into the perspective of more severe adult troll attitudes, I think it helps make everything the trolls have done so far seem more childish in retrospect. It was hard to gauge, because adult troll life was completely abstract. Hearing a little from one adult's perspective through this romfic shows how big the gap was between their youthful antics and what they were really trying to become.

It also puts a little perspective on why certain relationships are the way they are, seeing how their ancestral counterparts interacted (in this case, Vriska and Eridan, whose ancestor was Dualscar, which was the name of his RP character as well). But we still only have the one example to go on so far.

And on the topic of Vriska reading this thing for inspiration, to me it's kind of got the feel of a cross between a kid learning about a relative she looks up to, delighting in reading some unapologetically trashy romance novel, AND the troll equivalent of stumbling on her parent's porn stash. Which is not to say the entire journal is full of smut. But hey, there it is.

And lastly, you can look at the log as further insight into the nature of troll romance, their near-universal bisexuality, their apparently casual attitudes toward the multiple partners the quadrants demand, the tension surrounding the potential of hopping quadrants and the meaning of envy in this regard, an element of mysterious affection that still seems to surround the hate-based black relationships, and a certain degree of open promiscuity implied by the actions here. IF YOU CARE!

Good point. Also, we know that the kid's/guardians aren't identical, so it seems reasonable that the trolls wouldn't be either.

edit: though I guess A2 would have been different anyway due to Scratch's interference.

There are other ways the a reset universe could change, even with identical ancestors:

- As mentioned, interference throughout the troll history from Doc Scratch, the Horrorterror he planted in Alternia's ocean, and the Handmaiden.
- Put the players down in different places or different times (like Roxy and Dirk showing up way later than Rose and Dave did)
- Randomize their titles/classes?

The first point wouldn't be it, since Doc Scratch is a result of the Scratch's changes in the first place (if everything else was identical then A2 would have the same first guardian code as A1, which would mean the same first guardian as A1).

Second point is plausible, but I'm not sure about the third. There's no evidence to suggest the scratch does any randomising there.

Forgot to mention this earlier, but while I'm not sure Andrew would introduce all of the A1's ancestors I'm thinking that he probably will give more info on A1 Karkat at least. If only to explain the Cancer symbol necklace Aranea has. It seems unlikely to me, but I guess that could be for the A1 equivalent to the Signless though.

She did say she watched the whole A2 history play out. Maybe the necklace is just a fangirl thing she materialized after she died. Or maybe it's just her way of showing support for her coplayer's scratched counterpart. Who knows? I have a feeling it'll come up though.

I'm betting on LE killing Hussie's self-insert, ending the wacky self-insert shenenigans and the self-aware comedy narration.

Homestuck's always been bracketed with comedy meta-commentary which intentionally softens and diminishes drama. Hussie appears to like a genuinely dramatic climax in his stories, though (even if the killing blow is landed by, say, a handful of candy corn), so a great way to achieve that in Homestuck is to have Lord English start killing parts of the comic itself.

It fits in well with the nature of Homestuck, which has always reached far beyond the basic comic format to tell the story. Scratch's shenenigans were a good example of this, but Scratch was sort of foppish and silly, he had a disarming sort of demeanour that worked well with his goals (biding his time to create Lord English). Now that the final boss is here, though, he's going to start tearing the universe - even the narrative universe - apart with brute force, and it's going to build dread.

I could see Lord English taking control of the website like Scratch did too. Like there was Scratch.php, there'd be an English.php, with LE moving around and destroying the layout of the actual webpage or something.

Like want to check out the maps? oh poo poo LE's there and he's rearranging Act 3 and replaced Act 5.1 with pictures of the Felt crew. Or whatever.
