Okay, it's not exactly "easy listening," but it is everything else you mentioned. Goddamn, it is simultaneously so corny and awesome that I'll go a little out of the way to bring it up.

Trummor & Orgel should be directly up your alley.

Just an old hammond organ and a drum kit playing some sweet 70s style tunes.

Those guys tend to lean more to the emo side for my tastes, but if you want a primer to that kind of thick n' crunchy post-hardcore (as opposed to the watery n' tinny variant), you should get Drive Like Jehu's Yank Crime, Fugazi's Repeater, and Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You as a helpful triptych primer. Yeah, and those were just out about when I was getting into that stuff. I also liked Circa Survive, Finch (moreso Say Hello to Sunshine than their first album), early Coheed and Cambria, Black Sails-era AFI, Taking Back Sunday, mewithoutyou, At The Drive-In, The Sound of Animals Fighting, Rx Bandits, The Blood Brothers, Dance Gavin Dance.

I must say I was way more into Thrice than Thursday or Senses Fail, fwiw.

Since Thrice came up, what about something more like middle-era Thrice? Vheissu was my favorite, but I also liked most of the Alchemy Index stuff too. Somebody once recommended Isis when I asked for something like Vheissu, and I thank that person, but only In The Absence of Truth really scratched that itch.

Can you specify a bit what it is about Thrice and Isis that you like? They're different enough from each other that you could get recommendations all the way from poo poo like The Dear Hunter or The Receiving End of Sirens to stoner metal like Electric Wizard or Sleep.

Haven't been in this thread in a long while, so I'll come in and see if anyone has some new recommends for me :)

I love Rise Against. I've always had a thing for their sound which, to me, sounds like a hybrid between punk and metal. It doesn't really sound like what I usually hear when I listen to other "actual" punk bands, but it certainly isn't full-on metal, either. I'm also a huge fan of the lyrics that Tim McIlrath writes - meaningful, thought-provoking songs often centered around human rights and social inequality set to awesome guitar rifts and badass drum-work.

Thing is, it's difficult to find other punk bands I like as much. A lot of them have the awesome human-rights angle with good lyrics, but crappy music or a singer whose voice sounds terrible; or awesome musical talent with dumb lyrics that stray too far from the idea of "let's stop being douches and treat each-other better" and too far into "gently caress the police", like Rage Against the Machine does. And don't get me wrong, I like some of Rage's stuff, but a lot of it is just far too anti-establishment for me.

So, does anyone know of any decent bands (doesn't have to be punk, but I prefer "heavier" music) with a great, upbeat sound who do music in the same vein as Rise Against?

You likely won't enjoy this but maybe Raised Fist? It'll be much more hardcore than what you may be used to it, but I feel they fit what you seem to be describing in terms of hardcore punk with some metallic bits to their sound while being a bit upbeat.

I thought I was doing that by expressing that I liked both, but particularly where their styles seem to converge more with Vheissu and The Absence of Truth. I suppose I wasn't very clear, though.

Not exactly sure how to describe that singularity. Deep sounds, loud sometimes but still musical, echoey guitars and complicated layers of music and effects, stark volume and power contrasts during songs. Stuff like that.

In summary, I basically want more Vheissu.

Sounds like you may just be looking for some screamo... Thrice isn't screamo of course, but it seems to fit what you want aside from the "complicated layers and effects" as screamo tends to be pretty raw in its production, focusing less on petty effects and more on conveying emotion as if in a live setting. Try maybe Suis la Lune? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlQhZmy53z0 Envy may be worth a shot also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9RvqegTAH0

I'm looking for some more music in the style of the following two tracks from Tom Waits's Swordfishtrombones album.

The first is "Rainbirds" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haG1TtKBiEU

I'm guessing it's some sort of blues/jazz/lounge music. Is this a particular style or are there any artists I should check out?

Same goes for the second song although it's a completely different style.

"Just Another Sucker On The Vine" http://youtu.be/gYk1eEd6W5Q

Anyone who can point me to the genre and/or artists who make songs in similar styles would be much appreciated.

This is really getting close to what I'm looking for. The music is absolutely gorgeous and varied with some interesting riffs and rhythms, especially the Envy song, but I need more musicality in the vocals to scratch that stupid itch I've been trying to get for ages. Like, maybe 30-70% actual singing (some speaking like Envy is fine too, but needs singing), with the scream stuff at climaxes or choruses or otherwise used to punctuate.

The contrast between the speaking parts and screaming parts in the Envy track is closer by far than the Suis la Lune one. I didn't really feel anything from the Suis la Lune track, it just felt like screaming without purpose to me, full-tilt the whole time. It didn't really work with the music IMO.

If I get nothing more out of this, I'm happy you pointed me to Envy.

Unfortunately as the term screamo implies the bulk of the vocals are going to be screamed in such a fashion, it is like asking for death metal without growls, it just isn't likely.

Since you liked Envy i'll suggest some other Japanese bands like Heaven in Her Arms and Nervous Light of Sunday. Heaven in Her Arms started as Envy worship, but they recently came more into their own sound, which sadly may not agree with you, as they got really heavy, adopting a very crushing sludge influence. I'll link something old, and something new. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LzqVUp6Fjg http://youtu.be/1mHGQe3oGGU I personally consider that 2nd one to be one of the most perfect songs in existence, but YMMV.

Nervous Light of Sunday musically is more straight screamo with a metallic edge but your itch should be satisfied as they do sing clean now and again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIDmz4sli9U They also are indeed named after the Circle Takes the Square song if anyone was curious.

I'm also gonna toss in Cathedraal. They are a new French band worth a listen and are kind of a little darker in sound. I consider the vocals a little weak, but they may suffice for your itch as a result. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_3GKfOOlBE

Hope some of that helps.

Other favorite experimental (some more than others) bands of mine: Refused, Cursive, Arcturus, At the Drive-in, Man Man, and Tomahawk. I know this is a pretty scatter shot list and I'm sure I'm stretching the term "experimental" but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, I'm familiar with most of the associated acts and side projects of the bands listed. Like: The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Fantomas, Mars Volta, etc.

Close Your Eyes and Alexisonfire are exactly what I was looking for. Awesome metal/punk sound with great lyrics and clean vocals. I guess maybe I should've been a littler more specific - I do love metal/metalcore with screaming and growling vocals, but in this particular style of music, I prefer cleaner vocals (especially with the harmonies these guys do, similar to Rise Against) *punctuated by* screaming/growling, rather than having that dominate a whole song.
