And if you like any of those albums, holy poo poo do I have a bunch of recommendations for you.

Since Thrice came up, what about something more like middle-era Thrice? Vheissu was my favorite, but I also liked most of the Alchemy Index stuff too. Somebody once recommended Isis when I asked for something like Vheissu, and I thank that person, but only In The Absence of Truth really scratched that itch.

Haven't been in this thread in a long while, so I'll come in and see if anyone has some new recommends for me  I love Rise Against. I've always had a thing for their sound which, to me, sounds like a hybrid between punk and metal. It doesn't really sound like what I usually hear when I listen to other "actual" punk bands, but it certainly isn't full-on metal, either. I'm also a huge fan of the lyrics that Tim McIlrath writes - meaningful, thought-provoking songs often centered around human rights and social inequality set to awesome guitar rifts and badass drum-work. Thing is, it's difficult to find other punk bands I like as much. A lot of them have the awesome human-rights angle with good lyrics, but crappy music or a singer whose voice sounds terrible; or awesome musical talent with dumb lyrics that stray too far from the idea of "let's stop being douches and treat each-other better" and too far into "gently caress the police", like Rage Against the Machine does. And don't get me wrong, I like some of Rage's stuff, but a lot of it is just far too anti-establishment for me. So, does anyone know of any decent bands (doesn't have to be punk, but I prefer "heavier" music) with a great, upbeat sound who do music in the same vein as Rise Against?

I thought I was doing that by expressing that I liked both, but particularly where their styles seem to converge more with Vheissu and The Absence of Truth. I suppose I wasn't very clear, though. Not exactly sure how to describe that singularity. Deep sounds, loud sometimes but still musical, echoey guitars and complicated layers of music and effects, stark volume and power contrasts during songs. Stuff like that. In summary, I basically want more Vheissu.

I'm looking for some more music in the style of the following two tracks from Tom Waits's Swordfishtrombones album. Same goes for the second song although it's a completely different style. If I get nothing more out of this, I'm happy you pointed me to Envy.

I've been listening to lots of country lately: Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Ernest Tubb, Gram Parsons, etc. However, I am really just looking for more stuff along the lines of Parsons. His style exudes some sort of quirky soulfulness that I adore... And yes, I have listened to the Flying Burrito Brothers.

I just recently became a huge fan of The Paper Chase. I really dig the nice blend of the experimental and the listenable. Any other avant-garde bands that aren't just weird for the sake of it? Other favorite experimental (some more than others) bands of mine: Refused, Cursive, Arcturus, At the Drive-in, Man Man, and Tomahawk. I know this is a pretty scatter shot list and I'm sure I'm stretching the term "experimental" but any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I'm familiar with most of the associated acts and side projects of the bands listed. Like: The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Fantomas, Mars Volta, etc.

Though I like the song you posted, that album feels like it's made up of at least 50% ambient noise which really turned me off. Thanks a lot for this stuff The new album by Four Year Strong could be right up your alley, even though I'd rather you check out their previous records (the new is a bit too mainstream rock for me, but your mileage may vary). Oh, and check out Make Do and Mend as well, those guys rule.
