If progressive rock works, try Ars Nova and early Bondage Fruit. Strong possibility that at least one of those bands is too weird, but that's all I know.

I guess maybe I should've been a littler more specific - I do love metal/metalcore with screaming and growling vocals, but in this particular style of music, I prefer cleaner vocals (especially with the harmonies these guys do, similar to Rise Against) *punctuated by* screaming/growling, rather than having that dominate a whole song. More like these guys would be fantastic! Thanks a lot for this stuff Mikoto, maybe Taken and Beloved.

I'm looking for some 60's-70's psychedelic pop, except with slow or mid tempo, like a somber Brian Wilson tune. Specifically, I'm looking for stuff with layered instrumentation, soul-influenced vocals, or otherwise songs by people who are clearly tripping balls with sitars and flutes and poo poo, and less of that 13th Floor Elevators garage rock sound.

I'm throwing a 60's cocktail party for my wife's birthday this weekend and looking for some lounge music from that era. I don't really want to just play hits from the 60's all night, I'm just looking for music that people would listen to at that kind of party in the 60's. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a really big fan of The White Stripes and now that they are no more and will not make any new songs I'm trying to find stuff that sounds like they do. Their music is quite different from the earlier albums to the later so what I'm looking for more precisely is music that sounds sort of like this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t1_ETuWIbE

I'm looking for some chill country-influenced rock music. I'm way out of my element when it comes to bands like these so to give you guys an idea, I really dig stuff like this: Wilco - I Thought I Held You Wilco - It's Just That Simple (Apparently I'm the only one who thinks A.M. is by far Wilco's best) Iron & Wine - Prison on Route 41 Basically, chill songs with the lap steel guitar make me all wet in the pants, and I really don't have a good collection. Anything you guys can recommend would be greatly appreciated, even if it's not as slow as these songs here.

I'm looking for some more music in the style of the following two tracks from Tom Waits's Swordfishtrombones album. The first is "Rainbirds" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haG1TtKBiEU I'm guessing it's some sort of blues/jazz/lounge music. Is this a particular style or are there any artists I should check out? Same goes for the second song although it's a completely different style. "Just Another Sucker On The Vine" http://youtu.be/gYk1eEd6W5Q Anyone who can point me to the genre and/or artists who make songs in similar styles would be much appreciated.

Paperhouse posted:I'm looking for a good introduction to gospel music, or maybe just some of what's considered the best in gospel music. Thanks!!!!!! A couple of the big names worth mentioning: Staple Singers, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Little Richard (gospel stuff was really good!), Blind Boys of Alabama are good starting points. Modern gospel-wise I'm pretty clueless If you're a 45 sorta guy the Nashboro and Savoy are typically pretty safe and common labels to find. If you buy a random LP you're likely to get a choir (easy enough to spot, it'll have a big choir full of people on the front) or a 80s cheesy drum machine semi-funk sort of group. If you like that sorta thing maybe Andre Crouch is your deal, I can't stand that stuff though. If you like Rosetta Tharpe and her guitar style I'd suggest Utah Smith, Rev. Charlie Jackson, Louis Overstreet and Lonnie Farris. If you're a vocal quartet sorta person you might want to go with the Swan Silvertones, The Dixie Hummingbirds or the Zion Harmonizers might work for you. If you like raw, screamy, bluesy gospel then I can't recommend the compilation called "Fire in Bones" enough. It's a little pricey but 3CDs and completely worth it.

I've been a bit obsessed with the soundtrack to Valerie a tden divů recently. I'm not quite sure what it is about it. I want something dreamy and whimsical, but still somewhat unsettling. It reminds me a bit of the score to Rusalochka. A magical-sounding piece like Aquarium might also be similar to what I'm looking for. Or anything that sounds like it could accompany a dark fairy tale film. Uh, so, I'm terrible at describing music, but I hope someone has some suggestions.

Het posted:Maybe this is exactly what King Zog is looking for and I'm offbase but this seems massively out of left field to me. I can't say I ever would have thought someone would call Jons trance or recommend happy hardcore to someone looking for similar music. I'm hardly an authority on electronica subgenres, so maybe I am offbase, but I definitely hear strong similarities and I think the influence is obvious if nothing else. If the beat were more prominent in the mix for that How to Train Your Dragon track, I think it would be pretty much definitively happy hardcore.
