As usual hard to parse but maybe 3.25%, 1.75% of which is backdated a year. Stuff about severance pay changes too. Also raises to environmental allowances if you get those.

I don't think the pension changes will end up being too terrible and this will still be a (small) net raise in takehome pay. Waiting to see if the PLD shoe will drop, though.

Yup. The 3% increase in sub crewing allowance will be nice too

I hate to interrupt the basic training chat, but what's your take on the severance payout? In your travels have you noticed how they calculate a "day's pay?" Monthly salary / 30?

It seems to me to make no sense to not elect to take it right away, and stuff it in an RRSP (or maybe service debt). It doesn't accrue interest sitting with the feds as far as I can tell.

For those interested, we will no longer be paying in to any sort of severance package (which was kind of lovely anyhow). For the payout, basically everyone below the rank of LCol will be getting 7 days' pay for every year served, and will be able to take it right away, take part of it now and the rest at release, or wait until release for the whole sum. I don't believe the cheques will be coming till FY13 if I read the message right, though.

Not sure why it's hilarious to not give this guy a single straight answer...

Anyway, anything you bring that they don't want you to have access to they will lock it up in storage and you'll get it back at the end. There's a bunch of specific stuff you'll need (shouldn't they have given you a kit list?), toiletries mostly, but if you don't show up with them you'll be able to buy at the Canex once you get there.

Oh, best thing to show up with I guess is a good pair of running shoes. Wearing the terrible pt gear is mandatory, but wearing the horrible shoes is not.

Fair'nough.

Anyway, Libya was a pretty cool go. It was probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be in a Navy role doing something "real" and about as close as it gets in the Navy to actually being in harm's way. Being close enough to see, hear, and feel the aerial bombardment. Having to worry about artillery and rocket accuracy and ranges.

As callous as it is sounds a lot of people were disappointed that it was over so soon: we only got the phat bux for two and a bit months, heh.

Yeah I'm not too sure what to think, taking it out and putting it in an RRSP is probably the smartest call, but I'll probably use it for a down payment on a place or something.

It doesn't make any sense to keep it with the forces till I retire unless the interest rate they are offering is decent, which I doubt. It does suck for new guys, the severance pay was a nice bridge for the 6 or so months it takes for your pension to kick in

So I'm planning on taking a trip tomorrow, to the CFRC on Yonge St. I graduated college in May of 2010, I studied Aircraft Maintenance. If I'm not mistaken, the beginning of April is prime time to sign up (positions are open)? I went through the whole application/physical/interview process once before, around the same time I graduated. They didn't have any positions, and when the positions opened up in 2011 and they were calling me, the timing wasn't right.

My plan is to bring all of my paperwork from the last time I applied, and to start the process again. From what I recall, I believe I'd be able to join as semi-skilled, due to my schooling.

Do they require my highschool transcript, or only my college one? Any other suggestions so I can make as few trips as possible? I live over an hour away. I plan on bringing all of my typical forms of I.D. and so on.

Thanks guys.

They had told me to get both my high school and university transcripts when I first went in to CFRC Ottawa, but when I gave them my package today they said it wasn't necissary but made a copy anyways.

I'm not sure about the semi-skilled thing, I've already got a pilot's license and they said that doesn't give me any advanced standing since they want you to learn it their way.

Semi-skilled entry applies to a lot of technical diplomas for technical trades. The only way to get skilled entry into an operator occupation (which applies to pilot) is to have been previously trained by the Forces.

If you had a commercial license there is a possibility of a PFT bypass but that loophole may have been closed after they turned the screws at Portage.

Other items of note:

The new pay CBI is available. The internet link is at army.ca but I'm actively avoiding that place now so I don't get swept up in some sort of human rights sting. It has been super sketchy lately, no doubt now near hysterical with the F-35 debacle - real Dolchstoßlegende poo poo. Anyway, I get a $240/mo raise. Your mileage will vary.

Also, mid April pay just dropped and the PLD rumors have proved false, again. The whole amount is there. That said, Steve's probably got steam coming out of his ears over the above-mentioned debacle and he's nothing if not vindictive (see "Katimavik") so hold on to ur butts.

They have changed the recruiting process as of October 2011. Now they want everyone to apply online. Then fill out all the application forms, copy them and then mail them to the CFNRCC in North Bay. The CFRC on Yonge can't do poo poo until they get the word from the CFNRCC.

If you applied online before call the CFNRCC and tell them you want to reopen your application. Also the form for 5 references on the website is wrong. Now they only want 3 references, but with their home addresses.

They will want your highschool and college transcripts.

I'd give them a call. CFRC Ottawa told me to just fill out the paper forms despite online-only being the new policy. Apparently, following initial screening by CFNRCC its passed on along to the local CFRC anyways and they felt its just less of a PITA for them to handle it from the get-go.

Nanaimo's the worst city in BC, worse even than Prince George I'd say. Haven't been to PG in a long time but I'm pretty confident with that assessment (although terrible cities keep popping in to my head: Williams Lake, Quesnel, Ft. St. John, Ft. Nanaimo is like a cargo cult Surrey + old time no hope, no work, meth-fueled nihilism. All I'm saying is it's not surprising.
