I get emails from Students for Life because when I was a member of our campus Voices for Planned Parenthood group, we would watch them just to see what was happening in their little crazy world. Most of their emails are pretty bad but this one is so over the top.

quote:

How an anti-Death Penalty presentation promoted the pro-life message

Life Matters at Carnegie Mellon University is a student organization which subscribes to the consistent life ethic. Our causes range from abortion to human trafficking to unjust war, and our consistent philosophy enables us to make ties between these issues and effectively advocate for all human life. So, it’s no surprise that the topic of abortion came up at a recent event we held about the death penalty. As President of Life Matters, I invited a Professor from the University’s Ethics, History & Public Policy department to lead a forum on the ethics of capital punishment. During his talk, the Professor remarked that uncertainty is the predominant reason he opposes death row. Because the legal system is prone to human error and prejudice (minorities are especially disadvantaged), he argued, the death penalty should be abolished. In essence, capital punishment should be cast-off because it can cause the death of innocents.

Later in the discussion, the Professor asked me to explain the consistent life ethic, and naturally the conversation then turned to abortion. From our past discussions, I knew this Professor to be extremely pro-choice. He began to argue that abortion should be a woman’s decision because the issue concerns her body. When I stated that modern fetology and embryology define life as beginning at conception and that there is another body in question, he quickly dismissed these scientific facts, alleging that “we just don’t know” when human life begins.

At that point, something remarkable happened. A student who was not a member of Life Matters (and who I believe is pro-choice) raised his hand. He addressed our guest speaker. “Wait a minute,” he pensively began. “Your argument against the death penalty was that it should be illegal because we can’t be sure if the condemned person is innocent or not. So… isn’t it a bit inconsistent to say that abortion should be legal because we can’t be sure about when life begins and if an innocent life is being taken?” The room went silent. The room was pregnant with a palpable tension. This Professor had been busted—and everyone knew it. I could see the wheels turning in the minds of my pro-choice friends present. I even spotted one student write “DAAAMN” in a note to another attendee. The Professor was quiet. His inconsistencies were painfully obvious. The backpedaling, uncomfortable squirming, and careful explaining that ensued were very awkward, even laughable! Not surprisingly, the event ended shortly after that, with the Professor excusing himself to go home. But it didn’t matter: pro-choice students were already really thinking about and seriously reconsidering the validity of the pro-life argument. What’s more, they were seeing our logic and even agreeing.

And that’s how our event on death row became a powerful witness to the pro-life message.

"Best" is such a situational word, that pretty much goes out the window the minute you decide to walk around without a full armory strapped to your body. If I needed or wanted a self-defense gun I would probably go with a .357 Sig but I don't. Well, some idiot I think I went to high school with just posted this to Facebook:

http://lettersfromawhoremongerswife.com/2012/03/28/eve-was-unarmed-she-wasnt-wearing-a-hoodie-she-was-murdered-are-you-angry/

quote:

Eve Was Unarmed. She Wasn’t Wearing a Hoodie. She Was Murdered. Are You Angry?

I don’t have to tell you I’m not a racist; my life speaks for me. Yet, I will probably be called a racist because of this post.

I don’t like what happened to Trayvon Martin and I don’t claim to understand the frame of mind George Zimmerman was in when he fired his weapon. I don’t know the whole story behind the story. None of us do, yet. But this I know: a kid is dead and his killer is being publicly executed. The state of Florida is investigating the killing more slowly than some think is necessary and the Panthers have a bounty on Zimmermans’ head. People are angry with Florida. But more than being angry with Florida, people are Outraged at what they believe to be death by Racial Profiling. Perhaps profiling was a factor in the killing of Trayvon, unfortunately profiling happens everyday. But it isn’t a problem patented by one race. It’s a problem in every race.

When are we going to admit profiling, violence and racism exists everywhere…in all cultures, in and against every socioeconomic status? Violence is wrong, regardless of the reason behind it. Murder is inhumane, regardless of the color of the victim. But I ask, why aren’t we equally outraged when a white kid is killed by another race? Last week a boy in Ohio was burned by a group of black kids while walking home from school….media outrage? No. Did Al and Jesse show up and puff up in front of cameras? No. They’re calling Zimmerman a White-Hispanic…a term unheard of before now…a term being used to create more racial conflict.

In 2008 Eve Carson, a white female from Athens, Georgia was an exceptional student at the University of North Carolina. She served as President of the Student Body and was a Moorehead-Cain Scholarship recipient. She majored in Political Science and Biology, Pre-Med. Eve gave back to her community, she was a peer educator for underprivileged youth, was selected to be a North Carolina Fellow and she was murdered. Slaughtered by four blasts of ammunition to the head and body by two young black males (ages 17 and 21), because they wanted her car and her ATM card. The final killing shot tore through her hand and into her head as she made a sad attempt to protect herself; obviously aware the bullet to her skull would be fatal. Was she profiled? You bet she was. Eve was profiled as a Rich, Blue -Eyed, Blond Haired, White Girl. Were there protests, marches and outraged politicians speaking out for her? Did Barack call her family? Why is it about race only if the victim is black? Why aren’t we outraged when ANY kid is murdered? As a nation, have we been silenced by a politically correct whip? Lets’ be outraged about all murders, all racism, every injustice.

In the meantime, allow me to speak my mind without calling me a racist. You have the freedom to call me names but if I defend myself, you call me a racist. That’s not right. Let’s stop creating more problems for each other. Let’s grow up.

One last thing about Eve…one of her assailants testified that she asked them to pray with her before they killed her. “Let’s pray”, she said. One of the ATM videos shows Eve in the backseat of her vehicle with her murderers, she has her hands in the air, a Be True bracelet is on her wrist. Her head is bowed in prayer.

I started to say something, but then decided that I just don't have the energy. Last time I got into a fight with idiots on Facebook, I gave up after one of them tried to inform me that he was in my university's "Honors College," and therefore everything he said was right and I should just shut up and listen to the smart people. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I'm also in the Honors College and that it doesn't mean near as much as he thinks it does. They've broken me.

Money is a system of exchange, it is a storage unit and can be traded for other things of value. Grades are a system of measurement, they describe the status of a specific part of a system. The analogy may as well try to argue against taxation because you wouldn't give up some your measured height to make your short friend taller. It's not that it is imorral, or wrong, the problem is that it is non-sensical as a function of the system.

It's a really dumb analogy.

We are. So outraged in fact, we've designed a system in which people who kill other people are placed on trial, and if found guilty get to spend the rest of their lives locked up like animals and in some cases are put to death themselves.

If George Zimmerman walked out in the middle of the square tomorrow morning and a protester shot him and killed him would that make everything better? What exactly do people want? Everybody has been quick to judge in this case before the investigation even started. The police did want to arrest Zimmerman, but the States Attorney said they could not for lack of evidence. This process, however slow you may think it is, is unfolding and the police and investigators are following the law. The protesters and activists, however, are not!
