It's time for Adventures in Fork Seals with Forums User IcedPee! I've never done this before, but I watched a video about it on youtube, so that practically makes me an expert. Let's get started! When removing one of the brake calipers, I encountered this guy here: rear end in a top hat. Who cuts out the head of a bolt and then just puts it back (super tight, I might add)? Had to cut the fucker out with a hack saw. Also to be noted, my nails look a mess now. Gonna have to get them did before I go out. In any case, a new set was only $17 + s/h Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. The seal was beyond hosed. Only the rubber would come out, and it peeled off like flaky paint. gently caress this, all this work is making me hungry. Be careful when boiling your fork! If you over-cook it, it can get mushy. A little prying, and it finally came out. So, now while I'm cleaning everything up, I've got the replacement here: Now, I know where the seal goes, so I'm going to phrase this last question as intelligently as I can: Where's the other little rubber doohicky supposed to go? Edit: afterthought: The condescending, but informative, dude at the bike shop implied that, since my seals were shot and leaking oil onto the brake rotors, they would have to be cleaned somehow before it would pass. Is there any special way I should be cleaning them other than giving them a wipe-down and then just using the brakes a few times as normal? Looks like I might be taking a new job down south. The result? MEGA road trip down to Oklahoma City on the Dyna. This should be fun! Trying to figure out what the best way to go is to avoid lovely weather from seattle to OKC this time of year. Obviously going through Montana or Colorado is totally out.

Not tried them but it seems like a reasonable idea, if there's grit in the seal sharp enough to scratch the stanchion then it will already be scratching it with the motion of the fork. A (what I assume is) plastic card is not going to scratch hard chrome. The only real danger seems to be that you could wreck the seal, but then you were going to have to change it anyway. The main problem with the product is that it isn't much of a product, by which I mean, cut one your own out of a white HDPE jug (like the ones that commercial fluids come in).

I paid $12 for two brand new fork seals and the guy wants $8 for that piece of plastic. I know there's more labor involved in replacement than in whatever you do with that thing, but why not just do it correctly?

They'll clean right up. Just put something underneath like a towel because if they're really dirty, that black poo poo will drop all over the ground and make a mess.

You need a couple of specialist tools for seating the seal and setting the oil level too (although I hacked my own tools when I did it). Look up youtube guides on fork disassembly for an idea.

That little tool looks like it's a patch at best and useless at worst, and it isn't much cheaper than brand new parts that you know will solve the problem. That's all.

Like I said, I wouldn't pay money for one, but if a seal gets a small leak I'll definitely grab some thin HDPE or similar and give this a try. The concept is perfectly sound; those hydraulic wiper seals have two sealing surfaces and a groove in between to collect dirt and oil that gets through one or the other. If the only thing holding that wiper seal open is a bit too much grime then hooking it out isn't a patch, it's a fix, and you have nothing but a couple of minutes to lose by trying it, and possibly several hours of time to save. As much as I like wrenching on my bikes, a lot of the time I have better things/people to do/see.

Any of you fellas know a thing or two about tuning ECMs, even specifically Buell ECMs? My Ulysses has a dyno tuned fuel map set with a static AFV and the O2 sensor disconnected. It is tuned well for sea level, but I like to tour and I am concerned about fouling plugs going over the continental divide or whatever. If I reconnect the O2 sensor, it is going to lean the whole map out as learn-mode calibrates itself by applying global injector duration corrections to get it as close to 14.7 AFR as it can. I seem to have a couple options (and maybe more I am not aware of?): 1. Have the bike re-tuned on a dyno, and target 14.7 in the learn mode region of the RPM/TPS grid (<30% throttle, steady 1500-4000rpm). The drawback is that it will run hot. 2. Get a wide-band O2 sensor and controller setup similar to the Zeitronix Zt-3, and configure the narrow-band output to switch over at 13.4ish. Any advice? If it's tuned well it really shouldn't foul plugs at high altitude. You'll probably notice some decreased performance but I wouldn't mess with it until you've had an established problem with it.

In all fairness, it's a pretty god drat stupid campaign. Anyhow, I have an actual biek question. My carburetor is running too rich (actually belches fire with its dying gasp sometimes ) and while I can get lots of great info on how to adjust it, they don't tell me WHAT the gently caress to adjust, nor do they tell me a good way to know what carb I've got on the damned thing. What I have is this: The stuff I read acts like there should be only the mixture screw and the throttle adjustment screw, but as you can see, I have three screws. The one in the center of the image (left hand side of the carb) is obviously the throttle adjustment, but what are the other two on top?
