Just a general question for all the other podcasters: What services/podcast directories do you sign up with/register?

Obviously, iTunes is pretty much obligatory for podcasts, but I recently learned about Stitcher and applied for that. I'm also on rpgpodcasts.com and a few other podcast directories that I forgot about. I think I submitted RPPR to the Zune marketplace a few years ago but that's a non-issue now.

Podfeed seems to gather us a few hits, as well as Blackberry has its own "itunes"

I'm stepping into the wonderful world of trying to find intro music. I'm a little confused on what I can actually use. I see a lot of "royalty free" sites, but my internet scam alarm is going off when I see them. Also, am I "altering" the work if I cut off some of it and talk over part? If I want to just skip over all this and pay someone to make something for me, how much should I expect to pay?

Ive found the easiest way is to find some music you like and ask the artist for permission to use their music on a podcast on Facebook or Twitter. A lot of quality artists are really accessible over social media.

Try searching 'Podsafe' music too. The name's douchey, but it comes up with less scam alerting sites. Aniero's right too; a simple email is sometimes all it takes. A lot of bands are looking exposure just as much as you are!

While I'm here, I gotta toot my own horn! Two of my podcasts, the Bloody Good Horror Podcast and the 1951 Down Place Podcast, were nominated for 'Best Horror Multimedia (Audio or Podcast)' in this years Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards! http://rondoaward.com/rondo/rondos.html Not much in the grand scheme of things, still pretty sweet to be recognized as horror podcasts though!

I just got access to an 8-channel mixer, which means I can consider picking up a decent XLR mic.

How should I properly get the output from the mixer (independent L/R 1/4" or RCA jacks) into my PC?

Does your sound card have a line in? The easiest/most basic way is a cheap y cable running from your mixer to the line in jack on your pc. Should only run you around $5 at Radioshack.

An Analog to Digital Converter would be the best. They can run you to about 75$ bucks.

Anyone have any experience with rescuing corrupted/incomplete sound files? I love my R16 recorder dearly, but one of our panelists kicked the plug out of the outlet in the middle of recording and we lost possibly the funniest thing we've ever recorded.

I'm pretty bummed, but I can't imagine the data is actually gone for good. I've tried a couple of different file recovery programs, but so far all I've managed to salvage off the SD card is the *previous* episode of the show and a couple of totally bizarre files that seem to contain at least part of the Lost Episode. But when I bring them into Audacity as raw data, it crams all four channels on one track and cycles through the channels in 2.5 second chunks, one after another. It's weird and unhelpful and would be a nightmare to try to edit from.

Anyone have any ideas what else I can try?

That's actually a really useful link for my day job (thanks!), but I'm not sure it would be much good for my current situation: I think most of the data is floating around in random sectors of an SD card and has yet to be recovered. If I can find it all but only in weird scrambled form, maybe I'll see if they can make something out of it?

I had that happen to me about a year ago. The exact same thing, but on a Zoom H4 Recorder. I looked through the card and found that I might as well just say gently caress it. I re-recorded the show and it wasn't as funny, but it happens. Ron Bennington said it best about Radio, "Radio is art, the only problem is that I do art every day and basically fill a bucket. However, the bucket has a hole in the bottom, so I have to refill the bucket the next day." You're only as good as your last episode.

Hi all, I help out with the webcomic podcast on drunkduck.com

I have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. The company that owns drunkduck has been paying libsyn to host/run the podcasts, but apparently they're running out of space there and would like to remove some of the older recordings to make room for new ones. I'd rather they still be available, not because the first few are that great but because 'running out of room' sounds like an ongoing problem that will just keep coming up. They really want a free solution (and no-maintenance). Any ideas?

I'm not sure why they can't host them on drunkduck.com but perhaps that won't work with itunes or something?

I've started recording a show with my brothers called 'Taylor Made' (our surname is Taylor, it's an hilarious pun).

Website: http://taylormadepodcast.wordpress.com/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/TaylorMadePod
iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/taylor-made/id507760230

Basically we spend the entire time slinging insults at each other and having a laugh. The only real 'features' we have are where I ask a question about something I believe to be genuinely interesting and they just yawn over the answer and one where my idiot brother tries to impersonate various celebrities. In between that we just talk rubbish. Two eps so far, but the third one is going up this weekend and it was pretty funny.

EDIT: btw, would really like some feedback, like i said, only a few eps in so not really hit our stride yet.

So, my show Re:Fresh has decided to move away from the site where we originally launched our show because it was affecting the way we could promote our show. I have to come up with a new website for the show. Here's the thing: I have typically made websites using HTML only, which a really inefficient way of managing a podcast site and it hamstrings other people who want to contribute to website content but dont know HTML. I've had mixed results with Wordpress, so I'm curious if anyone can recommend a good content management system?

Dude, check it. It's a trash can. And a rollerblade.

Now shovel some cheese curls into my trash hole...
My friend and I started a bi-weekly podcast about 2 months ago. We discuss a pair of our local sports teams (baseball and hockey) as well as some random (non-)sports related things here and there. We have about as lo-fi a setup as anyone can have: a pair of USB mics, table stands, popscreens, an old version of Adobe Audition, and a lot of flying by the seats of our pants. But it's a fun diversion for an hour or so every other week, and we are serious enough to invest some money down the road to make things sound better.

Broad Street Buddies
Released bi-weekly (normally on Saturdays)
URL: http://broadstreetbuddies.com/
RSS: http://broadstreetbuddies.com/feed/buddycast/
iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/podcast/buddycast/id493868325

Our major issue seems to be with mixing. No matter what we've tried (matching mics, higher recording volume, normalizing, noise removal, etc.), there's always a bit of hiss/white noise in the background. Considering these are cheap mics (thanks, Rock Band!), we might not be able to find a real solution, which is fine for the time being. At some point down the road, we'll look into condenser mics and a mixer...we hope. :)

If anyone has good suggestions as far as mixing (without an actual mixer) goes, I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

Man, it's been a while since I've posted anything in this thread. There's been quite a few reasons behind that though.

First off, the Austin group has completely taken over Spankwagon. Back in December I was contacted by the main guy in Vegas who had ran the entire thing for the past 11 years. He wanted to give the entire thing to me. The domain, the Twitter accounts, the Vimeo accounts, everything. After 11 years he wanted to do something different. I am glad that he thought we could do a good job keeping up the spirit of the Wagon.

Too bad he didn't tell the Seattle group about it before we announced it on the air. I wasn't too thrilled with that. Thankfully they knew I wasn't behind that, though I'm not surprised that it might have been the reason why they split off onto their own thing. The funny part was were we considering splitting off before the initial discussion happened. Thankfully that was a talk I didn't have to have.

But now that the Vegas group is out of the picture, it seemed like a good chunk of the people who did pay attention just... well, stopped. Not sure how to take that, but I also look at it as a clean slate. Which I see as a positive thing. Gives us a chance to explore some new ideas.

First off, we're looking at doing a mix of longer form episodes and shorter "YouTuber" style videos. I think that way we'll be able to get those viewers who may have short attention spans, but yet also get those who are more willing to watch longer eps. That's the hope anyway.

While the viewership has taken a dive, something really positive has come out of all this. Due to some of the work we've done on the Wagon, we've been getting more and more requests to do video stuff outside of the podcast. Some of it paid, and some of it we did for free but for a good cause. That was something I certainly din't expect over a year and a half ago when we first started contributing video! We're getting more requests for paid gigs, so I'm seriously considering putting together a production company because of it.

In spite of all of that, I know I really have to change some things about the Wagon. The main concern is how we market the 'cast, but I also know the website is going to have to change. So once I have our current video backlog cleared out, I think we're going to go on hiatus for a couple of months so we have time to ponder and rebuild. So I'm really curious if anyone here might have any ideas about what might help us draw more viewers. Especially considering we're using YouTube as our video delivery vehicle.

Looks good, not too cluttered, color choices seem fine. Most important to me is being able to find the RSS links and an in-browser player.

I'm wondering if I could get some feedback of my own: the podcast I was doing hasn't been updated in ages, I want to continue but there's various things going on with my 'casting partner. So I've thought of doing my own. I know Riff Trax is pretty popular, but has anyone heard of a single-person podcast where someone talks over movies, with some personal stories, funny info about the movie and just generally being goofy? I'm thinking of doing this on my own, while hopefully keeping it interesting for an entire movie. The idea would be that actually watching the movie as you listen wouldn't be required (which is how you're meant to listen to RiffTrax). I love movies, have lots of DVDs and a Snowball mic, and think it might be fun/interesting to do a couple of episodes a month, maybe with a friend or two every now and then.

Yeah...I listen to the Joe Rogan podcast sometimes and I often can't get through a whole episode, but that's usually when he's too stoned and way off on a tangent I'm not following.

I'll have to think on this for a bit. Maybe since the movie doesn't have to be viewed while listening I can just chop out any uninteresting parts and keep the episodes to 30-40 minutes. I was thinking of recording a couple of test episodes this week to see how it goes.

I'd recommend the Blue Yeti. I got one a few months back and it's pretty fantastic. It's USB and has four different recording modes for if you're by yourself, with a guest, etc.

Yeah. The Yeti is a good choice if you're not going to drop serious cash on something where everyone can have their own microphone and stuff.

B&H has this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/772793-REG/Audio_Technica_THE_TWO_PERSON_Audio.html

But you could probably put together your own this like that cheaper if you looked around. But again, for just loving around 3 people sitting relatively close around the mic The Yeti is a good bet. Even the Snowball would probably be ok...

Not putting down your post, just a genuine question. I generally never advise people to get a Blue Yeti for the simple reason that I was under the impression that, although the microphone itself is decent value for money, the peripherals aren't. Which wouldn't be much of a big deal if there was a shock mount available that fit the microphone other than the ones that Blue themselves make.. which as I understand it are a bit extortionate.

Or am I talking crap? Never owned a Blue Yeti so I'm no expert.

The Yeti Pro version has a standard stand receiver in the bottom. They show it attached to an adjustable mic arm. So you can take it out of the slightly over-designed included stand and use it however you'd like. I do agree that the stand design is kind of nuts. I may be way off base, though... Mine broke pretty much right away. Waiting for the replacement. My Snowball is still rock solid. Brought it with me to professional work on the road. Its awesome.

EDIT: I see what you mean about the shockmount... seems silly. I had one for my Snowball but determined it wasn't really doing much so I stopped using it. However $70 for that shockmount is dumb. You can find it on Buy.com for $20 cheaper. Amazon for a little more. I think if its on an arm that thing isn't going to do much for you...

Yeah the stand it comes on, I don't know I really just can't.. stand(?) it, but I assumed it would be detachable. If the shock mount is available cheaper elsewhere then fair play that's not much of an issue I guess.

Aside from the base of that microphone and the crazyness with mounting etc I do really like the way it looks, though (because that's the real kicker, let's be honest ;D )

To be honest, I've barely even looked at the peripherals. The way it comes out of the box has worked pretty well for me aside from a mishap with the included USB cable. (That was my fault.)

I've looked at things like the shock mount, but it was too expensive for what I'm doing. Other than that, I've not really payed attention to the peripherals.
