My partner is sitting next to me reading ASOS and nearing the RW scene and everything that follows. Eagerly awaiting his reactions and will report back if anything gets smashed, hurled against the wall or if shouting ensures. I'm still plodding on with ADWD and hoping something interesting will happen, but it's no ASOS so far.

Just bought the first book on my Kindle. I haven't read a fiction book in years before I got my Kindle a month ago. I am a slow reader and the quest of my finishing it will be just as epic as the actual book is.

You'll still need it. There are locales and people mentioned in the books that are never seen nor talked about in the show, as well as a certain scene that was nixed in an area that you've never heard before, either.

I just finished season 1 of the show last night and now I feel like I should read these books. I just have to slog through the last bit of the Hunger Games first, which shouldn't take any time at all. From the TV show I was glad to learn it's very light in its fantasy elements, I don't handle fantasy well, but I gobble up sci-fi. Could this series be described as the Dune of fantasy?

ASOIAF is nowhere near like Dune. It's also not "very light" in its fantasy elements and gets more fantastical as it goes on.

If, however, you like politics like the Dune series extrapolates on at length, the series does remain consistently interesting in that particular area.

You're gonna have to stomach a lot of fantasy going through the series, though.

I'd say compared to most fantasy books its extremely light. Its not KJ Parker light, but it's definitely lighter than, say, Dragonlance or LOTR.

Well, yeah. But it's not what I'd call light fantasy -- that would be Lies of Locke Lamora or something. Early in the series, yes, it's probably somewhat apt to use that label, but the last two books have proven that somewhat wrong.

It's really light on the corny "made up fantasy names that could use an already existing english word to describe them" aspect, and most of the more cliched fantasy aspects come almost 2000 pages into the series. Sure there's some themes and elements running through the whole thing that are definitely fantasy, but it's easy enough to read through and "buy into" for the sake of story progression. For the most part if you can make it to the big fantasy stuff then you're already invested enough into the characters, stories, and the world, that you can get through the lesser aspects of the series to enjoy the better parts. And if you don't care about the characters enough then you'll never reach those points in the first place.

I'd say pick it up and give it a shot, a lot of people I know who hate fantasy enjoyed the first few books (Haven't made it to the fifth yet).

No. No, no, no, nononono.
The comic is an absolute piece of poo poo. They had a free copy at NYCC, and after that I checked the issues as they came out while I was buying other comics. The art is garbage, the dialogue is cut to the point it doesn't make any sense, and the plot is just destroyed.

I've just read Catelyn's chapter just over halfway through ASOS where poo poo hits the fan with her and Robb being killed. At this points it's tempting just to give up on everyone, Arya's so close to safety and then bam the remnants of her family is just destroyed. These books are heartless, winterfall is gone, most of the starks are gone, Tyrion's hated by everyone, Joffrey seems to be wrapping up his kingdom nicely while a massive army descends from beyond the wall and the only appealing character who seems to be making any sort of progress towards their goal, Dany, is on the other side of the world. Please tell me good stuff starts happening soon .

Just finished a Storm of Swords the other night and i'm starting to think GRRM is trollin me a little.

Around 100 pages before the end everything is looking like poo poo. Robb and Catelyn are dead, Tyrion has hosed up in trying to get himself not executed and up at the wall it looks like Jons back to getting shat on.
but then by the end of the book everything is better than ever. Tyrion isn't just got a clean escape he's also managed to get revenge on Tywin, Jon is head of the night's watch and Catelyn is alive (even if it seems she's in disfigured and demented state)

Those Starks are bloody hard to kill

On another note what is the ethnic make-up of ASOIAF?
Personally I've been picturing the seven kingdoms as White European (Scottish at the north and more French at High Garden), Drone as Spanish, the Free Cities etc as Persian and the Dothraki as Indian ( I know it'd make more sense for them to be Mongolian).

Is this similar to how everyone has been picturing it or am I totally off ?

I know it's a book and it's all subjective but I'm curious as to how everyone else sees it.

Edit: didn't want to double post.

All right, after hearing vague snippets about the series for several years and the darn HBO series becoming big, I finally took the plunge and have started reading this darn series. I just have one question: the general view is that the first three books are pretty good but the 4th and 5th books go off the rails in some fashion. Should I just quit after Book 3 or should I continue on just to see how deep the rabbit hole goes?

Also I heard Mr. Martin is a little too fond of sex, in its many stripes. Am I correct in thinking this first scene where 'Dany' is prettied up and a touch of perfume is briefly but specifically noted to have been applied to her genitals is just scratching the surface of another, possibly even deeper rabbit hole?

Book 4 is awesome, its just more political than the others. Book 5 is also better than books 1 and 2.

Its just that book 3 is so amazing.

I've read all 5 books. If I was starting out now, I'd read the first 3, and wait for book 6 to see if things get back on track to find out if it's worth reading 4, 5. The problem is that the fast paced WTF-ness of the first 3 books goes away, and is replaced by a slow, plodding, who knows what the gently caress is going to happen.

Without spoiling anything here's the problem with AFFC (4th) and ADWD (5th): They are, for all intents and purposes (and openly stated by GRRM), two halves of one book that might have been on the level of A Clash of Kings (2nd book). GRRM says he did the split to avoid one giant of a book but after a while you will start wondering if he just didn't want to let go of a bunch of dumb stuff in each of them.

That said every book has it's fans and detractors and they're all well worth reading.

And yes, it gets worse than vag perfume. 80% of the time you'll be able to hand wave it away as medieval brutality or dark ages ignorance. Do not, I repeat DO NOT, look into any of this mans other fiction before you get through the ASOIAF books or that number will drop to somewhere around 30%. You've been warned.

I feel like, as I read through it, ADWD has 3 acts to it.

The first introducing the big players in the book. Bran finding the greenseer, Davos being captured, Stannis taking Deepwood Motte and Ramsay capturing Moat Cailin all seem to be a way of ending the first 'act'. Now Quentyn making his way to Mereen, Tyrion on his second journey and Ramsays wedding have completely changed the way the book feels.

Its fantastic and gives the book a different feel from the others again.

Boiled leather boiled leather boiled leather boiled leather BOILED LEATHER BOILED LEATHER BOILED LEATHER BOILED LEATHER...!

I know it's a legitimate kind of armor, and it's probably cheap and hence used by many people, either for padding or in and of itself, but I really wish GRRM would mix up his terms for it, even if he had to make up a word like mummer or septor for it. Does the rest of the series contain such a high number of references about BOILED LEATHER?
