Here's something more landscapy, taken during a recent ski tour:

Which 10x ND filter do you have?

I really like the color and feel of the first shot. That black traffic light post is a bugger though.

Those snow shots are fantastic. That's definitely a lot of snow to completely bury the trees like that. Cool photos, and fun to look at while it's been in the 80's here in Southern California.

Pfft, that's not "buried". There's alpine areas that get so much snow ten foot trees will be completely buried, as in, you could walk on top of them.

It does look a lot cooler to have them ensconced in ice though. :v:

It's not as if I invented this or anything but now it'll be "oh cool! I saw that on gizmodo too!"

Anyways, more snowy outings:

This is a nice photo but I feel like it should be cropped a bit? The subjects seem to be the trees, cropping the sky out a bit lets the arrangement of the trees become the focus, and the sky just floats back there, as skies often do. Hope you don't mind an example:

Then I really like it.

Overall I agree with your suggestion and definitely appreciate the feedback.

I cropped it the way I did because to me it seems to give a better picture of what the day was like: standing on top of the mountain, pure white snow, those crazy trees, and big blue sky above it all. What happens to me during a ski tour, is that I work like crazy climbing up the mountain and there comes a point where the whole scene just sort of pops into existence. Exhaustion, thirst, blisters, all disappear as you suddenly find yourself in this amazing and alien environment with this weird sense of THE SKY above and all around you.

That's me being all artsy and thinking too hard.

Another goal of my composition was to have a balanced diagonal run through the image with the sky reaching down into the frame roughly the same length that the snow on the left reaches up, fudging a bit due to the cloud.

I'm not entirely sure I was successful but that was my thought process at least.

I think your original framing was superior, the balance of the sky is necessary.

It's Tour Montparnasse. It was built in the 60s, and when they built it, they realized it was basically the worst thing ever, so they made it a law that you cannot build skyscrapers anywhere in Paris. Sadly, they didn't destroy this tower. It's now said that the best view of Paris is from Tour Montparnasse because it's the only view of the city where you can't see the tower.

Also, just as an added bonus, it turns out it's filled with asbestos that they're now trying to get rid of. :bravo:

I like to call it "Kickback Tower" because it's obvious whoever approved that monstrosity got some major kickbacks out of it.

That's pretty hilarious.

I bet if it stays up for another 100 years people will want to keep it around because it's a part of history or something.

The landscape seems too washed out, if that's changeable. And maybe too... soft?

edit: OTOH it gives it an interesting sandpaper-y feel.

Good to know. I'll play with the contrast some and see if I can get a balance between too soft and overwhelmingly sharp. Thanks for the feedback!
