Edmonds Coopers Hawk by beastofexmoor, on Flickr

I was leaving the Edmonds Waterfront, which had been great through a spotting scope, but pretty dismal for photographs, when I noticed something fluttering in the road ahead of me. I figured it was a crow or Pigeon that had struck by a car, but as I got closer I realized that it was a Juvenile Coopers Hawk that had taken a pigeon right in front of me.

Fortunately, he landed roughly in the middle of the road and was conspicuous enough to cause most of the passing cars to slow down. After about thirty second, it flew off, bumping into one of the stopped cars bumpers as it flew, and appeared to make it away. I thought it had the bird with it, but a guy standing nearby said that a pigeon walking nearby was the one it had caught and had escaped.

If you took those pics in North America, those are probably Great-tailed Grackles, and not crows. Not sure if any european/asian crows have that irridescence and yellow eyes.

Yeah, great-tailed grackles are pretty common in Texas. Pointier bill, a bit sleeker body than a crow would be, longer tail than a crow, and a little more iridescent. That head-up posture is also pretty typical for grackles (and some other birds in the family). I've never been to Austin, but at least in some of the towns along the Rio Grande, these guys roost together in huge colonies and make the biggest racket. Sounds like you're standing underneath the world's largest Chucky-Cheese.

It's a comment on the dichotomy between old and new ways that people vicariously experience wildlife.

big scary monsters
Sep 2, 2011

-~Skullwave~-
I went for a cycle along the canal today to try out my new 600mm cadiotropic lens. The reach is incredible, but handheld I have to shoot about 1/500 to avoid blur, and at fixed f/8.0 on a rainy day, I was at ISO1000-2000 the whole time. Nailing the manual focus isn't easy, either. Think I'm either going to have to get an AF confirm chip for it or a better focusing screen.

This grey heron came and sat on the bank opposite me while I was taking a break. Shame that the only shot I got in focus was in front of a bunch of rubbish bags. And it's noisy as hell.

A moorhen, I think. I got the focus pretty much bang on its tailfeathers. :bang:

Anyway, for £70 it's a cool lens to have, but I think it's going to need a tripod to get any half decent results.

EDIT: That all sounds a bit negative. Cycling in the rain was lots of fun, and I saw swans, Canada geese, ducks, moorhens, a heron, sparrows, starlings, a ton of other LBF I couldn't identify, a robin, crows, loads of pigeons, squirrels, and a canal boat being towed by a horse! Just the photos that were a bit disappointing.

Here's a couple Goldeneyes from a couple days ago. Had problems getting a nice shot of a male's head that showed off the green/purple, lighting was weird with the ice in the pond and how dirty the water was. Also, these things are really skittish, but when they take off they just do a lap or two of the pond and then land within 10 meters or where they took off from.

It was just a quick trip for work so I didn't expect to have much time to explore, but the stuff I was supposed to test wasn't done yet so I basically worked half an hour and got the next day to myself. I got to spend some time at Botanical Beach. Last time we came up we got stuck in traffic and arrived at sunset, which was great for photos but sucked for exploring. Sadly it was high-tide, but I still enjoyed walking around.

I'm headed back up on Thursday, but hopefully they'll have their act together this time and I'll actually be busy. I may be back again in a couple months. I'll give you a PM if it happens.
