I prefer the new coloring in Killing Joke. :colbert:

The coloring can totally change the mood. For TKJ the neon colors were like seeing the pages through the Joker's eyes. The colors change with the story becoming warm with intensity (Barbara getting shot or Gordon seeing her naked pictures) to cold during the end as the orange hues clash with Batman's black and blue as Joker ends the story. Flex Mentallo was supposed to be a Golden Age homage and the gaudy colors suit it. I saw it in stores today and the book looks solid overall but it's more of a "why bother?" kind of deal when the original looked good and fit the story's mood.

Color seems to be the hardest thing for comics to get right. It's either laid on too thick or with no eye for color theory like they're trying to color everything naturally (like a movie still) which doesn't work well with visual storytelling. Out of every bad example I've seen with their off model drawings and traced-from-porn poses, they almost all have universally bad coloring jobs.

Yes, but I'm pretty sure it was limited to the backgrounds, so things get individually colored instead of a sea of yellow people in yellow clothes. It looks a lot better.

I never understand this. Even with Greg Land and stuff. How much time do these tracer guys even spend in a day working? It's insane. It would take like, five minutes, maybe, to come up with a face and get it inked, but they have to be spending hours googling, that's just not efficient cheating/hack work

Greg Land has like maybe 10 faces and expressions. I'm sure he has a reference drawer to fit he goes to to fit his needs and in the end, it actually does end up being faster because of this.

This is funny because it is true.

Again, the worst thing about Land's tracing is that he used to actually draw and wasn't bad at it.

These pages come from Supergirl #11 (2006). Art by Joe Benitez. I think this guy's style is, overall, OK, but his rendition of Supergirl just feels weird to me. He gives her a smaller jaw, giving her face a rounder appearance. The other thing is how shy and submissive she appears before Nightwing. Now, I know Nightwing is badass, but she has reckoned with people even bigger than him. Such as Batman.

I can see what he was trying for, exaggerating some features to make her look younger. But she comes across like a real life Bratz doll. The inker and colorist didn't do him any favors, either.

In fact, the color on those ChrisCross samples are really bad too.

This is everything I hate about the X-TREME 90s art style that carried over. Excessive crosshatching and thick lines doesn't lend to increased muscle definition. If anything they should be more veiny. And the suits are so impossibly skintight that it's like body paint, not any kind of cloth material.

I know, I know these are supposed to be fun not realistic but it doesn't even look good. I've seen artists draw finely sculpted butt cheeks on Iron Man.

I don't mind muscular women at all in my comics, but in this case, I feel like if you removed the boobs that look like cantaloupes stuffed under her shirt and cut her hair, you'd be left with a red Jean-Claude Van Damme.
