His standup DVD is alright I think. It does cover all the same stuff as Grandma's House, and it gets weaker and weaker as it goes along, but I still quite liked it. The brutal honesty of it all is pretty interesting and refreshing.

Cemetary Junction as I said I loved and I found enjoyment in Ghost Town and The Invention of Lying. I have the XFM shows on basically an infinite loop, getting through them all over the course of a year and then starting again. In fact, they're what I've always used in the past to stand up for him. He genuinely comes across as a nice guy in those. He'll act the prick for comedic effect in them, but seemed like a really down to earth guy. It's only in the past year or so that he's really been pissing me off. It's as if he's completely changed since he's had some success in America. At first I thought he was just playing it up a bit as a joke, but it's gone on too long now. On this note, that Talk Funny thing he did for HBO where he, Jerry Seinfeld, Louis CK and Chris Rock sat around sucking each other off for an hour was a bit painful to watch. He had no right being there, really. While he's done stand-up, the way he got into it (after other success and with a ready-made audience) was completely different to the rest and he added very little. I think his production company made it though, so that would explain it.

Dunno how good it is overall, but I'm enjoying what I've seen of Film4's must watch season. Casablanca yesterday morning, and then back from the pub to catch the second half of Dr. Strangelove tonight. That's some good films.

Has Derek been on yet? My main beef with it was getting Karl Pilkington to act in it. I know that he has effectively been playing a caricature of himself since 2003, but it just seems so wrong to have him 'acting'.

I thought the Simon Amstell stand up was pretty good (I'm assuming we're all talking about the same one here, where he makes the joke about having two basins?) It's not a laugh riot but I loved how candid it was. To say that he's generally not funny is ridiculous - he was great on Popworld and NMTB. Grandma's House was pretty good too but a bit ruined by his lack of acting ability. Anyone know if series 2 of Bob's Burgers is getting picked up over here (on a freeview channel)?

I'd like to thank the people that were recommending State of Play a few pages back. I enjoyed the first five episodes immensely, and I'd rank it as one of the best dramas on British TV since Cracker. Bill Nighy steals every scene he's in. But I pretty much guessed by the end of episode five that the final twist was going to involve the revelation that Stephen Collins had hired the hitman. After watching and reading far too much Agatha Christie, I just expected the character the writer wanted me to feel most sympathy to be the villain.

I really enjoyed Destination Titan on BBC4. It's on the iplayer at the moment http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0109ccd/Destination_Titan/ It's really nice to have a show about the PROCESS of science not just the results. Derek was pretty good. I do feel it would be better without gervais in the title role as he seems to have cast himself beyond his own abilities. Karl was superb though he's basically just playing himself.

I like to imagine that this pilot's just to lull everyone into a false sense of security. The full-length series will just be Gervais making his 'mong-face' and cruelly abusing people with learning disabilities. It did make me feel pretty teary, but I'm going to blame that on the fact I was on a massive comedown this morning when I watched it. Knowing what Gervais is like, I do find all the pathos a little bit manipulative. Despite my earlier worries though, I actually thought Karl Pilkington was really pretty good in it.

Maybe this has been addressed earlier in the thread, doubt it though. Can somebody explain to me what's supposed to be so great about Keith Lemon? Can't go an evening without being subjected to some loving awful trailer with him in. I often ask myself "what is supposed to be funny here" and "who is this aimed at?". I just can't stand that guy.

I like all the usual UK Megathread favourites (Stewart Lee etc.) but I also like Keith Lemon. For all you satire and irony and subtle comedy you sometimes need something simple and crude and outrageous and he fits the bill well.

I have no idea what people are seeing in Derek, for every laugh there was a good five minutes of awkward silence where I was trying to work out whether I was meant to find Ricky Gervais' character funny because he moved his face in a strange way.

Yeah, I liked Derek, I wouldn't have minded Gervais as the lead half as much if we'd never seen his mongface before. Love that Channel 4 keep giving us some Ludovico Einaudi between Derek and This Is England, but the guy's got a massive catalogue and it just seems to be the same few pieces over and over and it feels pretty cliche. Maybe it's my fault for actually being aware of his stuff so much though.
