She did those great vocals for MJ Cole's So drat Into You which is a fav (though not that particular mix actually).

Bok Bok has been dropping these tunes on Rinse and they are hot. The EP should be out pretty soon however, so you shouldn't need to wait long. Anyway it's Friday afternoon, so do you know what time it is? That's right it's time for the But eventually I shuffle through those gates at 9am when the bell rings, so just when you thought I'd disappeared, I'm back with a bumper round-up of what's coming out this next week. Well some technically last week as well as this week but whatever! We've actually had/will have a surpring amount of albums out over the next wee while too, something to keep you busy during the approaching Easter holidays. Photek DJ Kicks (!K7) Photek's DJ-Kicks mix has been hyped up quite a lot over the past month. Granted a lot of that is my hype, but I've been diggin' it and so have a lot of people. Hopefully the fact you lot could've streamed the entire album off the official Soundcloud page last week helped convince a few of you who've not been entirely sure of Photek's new output. Addison Groove Transistor Rhythm (50 Weapons) Modeselektor's 50 Weapons label has slowly been making a name for itself in on the UK Bass scene over the past few months, helped greatly by actually releasing a lot of great records over the past wee while. That trend continues with the debut LP by Addison Groove. Honestly it's as you expect, the former-Headhunter presenting his twisted take on Chicago's Juke/Footwork thing. Like the unforgettable Footcrab and the following singles he's released, it's not a straight take with enough elements nicked from Dubstep, Funky, garage and Jamaica to keep things that little bit more interesting. No idea where he goes from here, but whatever happens it's bound to be a fantastic landmark LP and one to be remembered. Ramp 50 (Ramp Recordings) Ramp celebrates it's 50th release with this budget priced CD compilation, featuring some of the choice cuts from the Ramp catalogue, from FaltyDL to Hypno to Zomby, they're all here. Well mostly. Really 17 tracks for less than a fiver, it can't be beat. LHF Keepers Of The Light (Keysound Recordings) You may remember me talking about this album a few weeks ago, when I featured one of the lead-up EPs for this double disc album. And it needs to be a double album, being essentially a 'best of' by Amen Ra, No Fixed Abode, Low Density Matter and Double Helix who make up LHF. Packed full of beats that while I guess you could term 'Future Garage' are really way too cool for that terrible term. Influences spanning from Metalheadz-era Jungle, to the darker 2-Step that the likes to El-B, Horsepower and Oris Jay pioneered, to '06 Dubstep, there's something for everyone here. Unless you suck, in which case the Metal CD rack is over there. Lone Crystal Caverns 1991 (R&S) The first single off Lone's soon-to-be incoming LP Galaxy Garden and it's a real cracker. Really it's the A-side that gets me going. Here Lone's really managed to bottle lightning with a perfect mix of modern day Bass sound and the classic Hardcore sound of 1991 that R&S helped made famous. This'll be a bit of a spring/early summer anthem no doubt. The Town The Movement (ClekClekBoom) I know ClekClekBoom's artwork could maybe be seen as a bit of a rip-off of the Swamp81 style, but you sure can't say the same about the music. The Town is French producers Karve & Kazey, but this time they're on a proper Funky ting. I was half tempted to say old skool there since it wouldn't seem out of place in a Supa D set circa-2008. I don't think that's a bad thing though. Hatti Vatti You (Phaeleh/Indigo Remixes) (New Moon Recordings) The original version of this came and went a few months ago, but now it's had a couple of remixes, courtesy of Phaeleh and Indigo. Now in all honesty this probably shouldn't have made this weeks round-up as in truth it's only the Phaeleh remix that I like. The Indigo remix takes it up to 170 and to me doesn't really do much with it, but the Phaeleh remix is a nice wee swinger of a track, that's what does it for me. Versa & Rowl Lunar (Smokin' Sessions) Another case of leave out the 170. Zodiac on the flip follows the above, just ain't my thing. But the A-side it where it's at. Smooth, laidback, summer chillout 2-Step vibe going on there. Dark Sky Black Rainbows (Black Acre) Yes I know, Dark Sky with their Black Rainbow EP on Black Acre. Another dark in there and you'd think you were dealing with some bizarre Norwegian death metal act. Even the artwork is a watery oil spill on a bit of black tarmac. But no fear lads, luckily you're stuck with an act I've been keeping an eye on. Strong basslines throughout this Garagey influenced double pack, though with the occasional drift into more Funky and even Techno terrain. Wunderbar. Though not so wunderbar is the price of the double pack. Come on guys I love vinyl more than anyone, but 2 tracks per side and we'd be golden at half the price. Nina Kraviz Ghetto Kraviz Edits(Amine Edge/Alex Kidd Remixes) (Rek'd) Everyone's favourite Russian girl (and I think everyone can appreciate how difficult that can be at times) has her album out this week too, with the lead single being the majestic Ghetto Kraviz. But also sneaking out the back door on Rekids sub-label Rek'd is the remixes of the track by Amine Edge and Alex Kidd. I think the Amine Edge remix has been floating about for a while, but I'm not too sure about the Alex Kidd remix which lightly revamps the original just enough to give it it's own identity. Auntie Flo Oh My Days (Pearson Sound Remix) / Highlife (SOPHIE Remix) (Huntleys & Palmers) We continue with the remix theme with this 10 on Huntleys & Palmers. Pearson Sound keeps the beat heavy and the percussion jumping and skipping with his remix of Oh My Days, whereas SOPHIE takes on Highlife and turns it into a cracking melodic, artic ice synth lead piece. Svengalisghost Mind Control EP (L.I.E.S.) L.I.E.S. Continue to prove America can still release stuff on vinyl, and it hasn't been reduced strictly to the terror (and terribleness) that is Beatport. Here it brings Svengalisghost, an artist I have never heard of before but will be keeping an eye out for in the future. 3-tracks of rhythmic, futuristic House action. Trevino Derelict/Buried (NakedLunch) The great little NakedLunch label brings us this hot new single by Trevino, aka Marcus Intalex. The a-side has this great late-80s House sound transported and warped with 2012 technology. Big lead bassline thunders along some simply gorgeous hi-hat and clap action. Buried meanwhile gives a fantastic take on a more laid back and loungey kinda sound. Lando Kal Rhythm Sektion/Inquisition (Hotflush) As usual my idea that you should always trust something that spells things with a K instead of a C works out. Rhythm Sektion is a great big bloody metallic bumper of a track, while Inquisition takes an even more darker twist that swaggers along with it's kinda rubber bandy creepy crawl midnight action bassline. As with the last Lando Kal stuff, bag it. 28 Gun Bad Boy fucked around with this message at 21:55 on Mar 31, 2012 |

Just such a breath of fresh air that I really needed at a time when the Dubstep scene was, quite frankly, getting a bit stale and even antagonistic to me. It was just incredible though as after half a decade kinda ignoring Housey sounds, ignoring more upbeat stuff it was like someone just took the bag from off your head and you could breath deep again. I mean from 03 right up until late 07 I was on pretty much a purely Grime/Dubstep tip with the only kinda lighter stuff being my love of Broken Beat (actually when I first heard Funky stuff I thought it sounded really similar to Broken). Actually you could probably extend that too 2001/02 given the types of garage I was listening to was stuff the the more darker breakbeat stuff or the MC stuff. It was just proper, pure, musical, unfiltered dance music again. Fan-loving-tastic. Anyway one of my many, many regrets was not getting the money together and taking the train or a Ryanair flight down south and getting to one of the old Circle nights or Casa Funk. Though to be honest that was just as much for the girls as the music! Funky - a warning of getting too big, too fast, with way to many people jumping on the bandwagon (skank tunes ahoy!). Still at the very least it left us with this wonder, which goes into one of my favourite tunes of the decade. Just loving perfection.

Off the top I can't really think of anyone on the label that are similar to them really, but you could give it a try anyway, might be something you like. I'd say check the 3 volumes of Deep Medi Releases, though I think the last one may have came out a bit before Old Apparatus was signed. Otherwise maybe their might be stuff on the new Goth-Trad LP you might like, and of course to state the obvious Burial. And in other news, R&S sub-label Apollo is revived this week with this release by Synkro. At least it's keeping with Apollo's more general ambient-ish theme. The next two releases being from Jack Dixon and Submerse. I'm still liking it when labels seem to have a proper release schedule, and not one every 10 months or whenever. I also finally picked up the new Hint album out on Tru Thoughts last month. The tracks off the single that came out a few months ago (Crash & Burn / Aliens Enter) are still some of the best off the album but it's pretty drat good. Pick it up at Tru Thoughts online store for not far north of 7 quid.
